SUBIACO has won its way into a fourth successive WAFL Grand Final overcoming a slow start to beat South Fremantle in the preliminary final at Leederville Oval by 32 points on Sunday.   Both the Lions and Bulldogs had lost to Peel Thunder in the opening two weeks of the AHG WAFL Finals Series meaning there was only room for one of the top two teams from the home and away season in the Grand Final for 2017.   South Fremantle made a terrific start to the preliminary final with the opening three goals before Subiaco steadied to kick eight of the last 10 goals of the first half to head into half-time with a 22-point advantage. LEIGH Kitchin has been the standard bearer in Subiaco's midfield in his three seasons since arriving from Frankston in the VFL and the contested ball and clearance machine doesn’t want to find out what it's like playing in the WAFL and not at least reaching a Grand Final. Kitchin arrived at Subiaco in 2015 stepping right into the midfield in a team that went on to win the premiership with him a key part of the line-up. REIGNING South Fremantle fairest and best winner Shane Hockey holds himself to high standards so he was as disappointed as anyone following the qualifying final loss to Peel, but he bounced back emphatically and now is desperate to play in the first Grand Final of his senior career. Hockey joined South Fremantle from VFL club Frankston last year and had an outstanding first season in the WAFL claiming the Bulldogs' fairest and best award and getting to play finals at senior level for the first time in his career. Previously the last final he had played in was a 10-goal loss for Mornington under-18s against Frankston YCW. AFTER shaking off the disappointment of losing to Peel Thunder last Sunday, all Subiaco coach Jarrad Schofield is focused on now is bouncing back against South Fremantle in Sunday's preliminary final to book a spot in a fourth straight WAFL Grand Final. SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley is chasing his first Grand Final appearance as a coach with all but four of his squad desperate to reach their first one as well with the Bulldogs feeling buoyant heading into Sunday's preliminary final against Subiaco. Curley is in his sixth year as a senior coach in the WAFL having previously spent three years at West Perth and now he is in his third season with South Fremantle on the back of a playing career that included two premierships with the Falcons on top of 118 games in the AFL with Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs. THE 2017 wafl.com.au Team of the Year has been finalised, with the best 22 players plus three emergencies named based on weekly nominations throughout the McDonald’s WAFL Premiership season. Each round during the season, a Team of the Round was named on wafl.com.au, with 192 different players named at least once across the 23 weeks, making them eligible for selection in the overall Team of the Year. The Team of the Year has been selected based not only on the number of times each player was selected in the Team of the Round, but also on their playing positions and strengths to achieve the best overall team of 2017 WAFL players. GREG Harding was deserving of coaching Swan Districts to at least one WAFL finals victory and he got that in his second last game as senior coach as a good reward for the tremendous work he has done during difficult and challenging times for the club since the 2010 premiership. Harding took over as senior coach at Swan Districts in 2011 with Swans coming off a grand final appearance in 2008, preliminary final in 2009 and then the remarkable premiership triumph in 2010. He had been assistant coach to Brian Dawson during those three years while also successfully coaching the colts, so he was the ideal fit to continue Swans on the path that they had been on.
