Friday, September 1, 2017 - 10:26 AM
The West Australian Football Commission officially launched its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) on Thursday, August 31 to set a clear vision for building stronger relationships with Aboriginal people and communities across WA. WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor said the WAFC’s vision for reconciliation was an inclusive football industry built on acceptance and understanding, where all people work together to improve the quality of life for Aboriginal people and strengthen relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians. “The WAFC has witnessed firsthand the positive impact football has on the Aboriginal community. This impact extends beyond the playing field to include families, friends and the community as a whole,” he said. “Football has the capacity to educate, improve health, develop leadership and provide a stepping stone to employment. This is reflected in our vision to connect and enhance WA communities through our great game. Read More ...

LIAM Ryan confirmed his place as the excitement machine of the WAFL and there were a host of other standout individual performances but ultimately what Round 23 will be remembered for is the thrilling finish that saw West Perth beat Claremont and East Perth to fifth position. Swan Districts, East Perth, West Perth and Claremont remained locked in a battle over the two remaining finals position entering the last round with Subiaco, South Fremantle and Peel Thunder already secure in the top three spots. The first piece of the puzzle was with Swan Districts having the chance to lock in fourth spot with a win over East Fremantle at Steel Blue Oval. It wasn’t to be with the Sharks avoiding the wooden spoon with the 20.10 (130) to 10.9 (69) victory. Read More ...

Round 23 – Claremont v West Perth Match Report

Monday, August 28, 2017 - 5:36 PM - by Chris Pike
THE clash between Claremont and West Perth was always set to provide a dramatic finish to the 2017 WAFL season and with the Falcons kicking the last two goals to win and storm into the finals that certainly was the case at Claremont Oval.   Claremont and West Perth have played in a string of remarkably tight and tense games in recent years with precious little separating the two teams and no love lost from them out on the field either.   So with the potential of a finals position being at stake on Saturday at Claremont Oval the stage was set for a tantalising and tense contest from start to finish. Round 23 – East Perth v Subiaco Match Report

Monday, August 28, 2017 - 3:24 PM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO has soared towards the 2017 WAFL Finals with a 19th straight victory for the season beating East Perth and ending the hopes of the Royals with a 42-point victory at Leederville Oval on Saturday.   East Perth needed to find a way to be the first team to beat Subiaco since South Fremantle did so back in Round 1 in order to make up for last week's upset loss to Perth and still play finals in 2017.   The Royals weren’t able to match it with the Lions in the second half after only trailing by eight points at half-time. They still had a finals hope, though, if Claremont beat West Perth at Claremont Oval but not by enough to overtake the Royals on percentage. Read More ...

Round 23 – Swan Districts v East Fremantle Match Report

Monday, August 28, 2017 - 1:41 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Fremantle produced its best performance of the season to avoid the wooden spoon and beat the finals bound Swan Districts by 61 points at Steel Blue Oval to farewell club great Andrew Stephen on Saturday.   There was potentially plenty at stake for both teams coming into the final round contest at Steel Blue Oval with Swans facing the prospect of possibly missing the finals with a loss while the Sharks would finish last and claim the wooden spoon with anything but a victory.   In the end it was a disappointing performance from the black-and-whites against a lowly opponent but to East Fremantle's credit, they played some exciting and attacking football which is something that hasn’t always been the case throughout the season. Round 23 Preview - East Perth v Subiaco

Saturday, August 26, 2017 - 1:56 AM
THE rivalry between the Leederville Oval co-tenants has been a fascinating one since 2004 even if dominated largely by Subiaco but East Perth's season goes on the line on Saturday with the Royals needing to end the Lions' winning to run to play finals themselves. With Subiaco entering Saturday's clash at Leederville Oval on an 18-game winning streak and East Perth needing to end it at 18 in likely the only chance for the Royals to still play finals in 2017 then the stage is set for quite the finish to the home and away season between the two clubs. Given Subiaco has won 18 straight matches since losing to South Fremantle in Round 1, the Lions have the minor premiership wrapped up for a third straight season as they chase a fourth successive grand final appearance and a third premiership in four years.
