WAFL Round 21 teams and previews

Friday, August 11, 2017 - 1:51 PM
THE top two and bottom two spots in the WAFL might have their teams decided for 2017 but in between remains a fascinating battle over finals positions coming into Round 21 on Saturday. Subiaco is guaranteed of the minor premiership for a third straight season and South Fremantle will finish second for the second consecutive year. East Fremantle and Perth also remain anchored to the bottom two spots even though who finishes last is still to be determined. While Peel Thunder and Swan Districts do appear set to occupy third and fourth spots as well, nothing is guaranteed for either and then there is East Perth, West Perth and Claremont remaining in a fight for what appears just the one available finals position. Higgins reaches 100 games in career-best form at Bulldogs

Friday, August 11, 2017 - 10:36 AM - by Chris Pike
HE is the in-form ruckman in the WAFL and this Saturday South Fremantle big man Brock Higgins reaches 100 games but that's far from his focus right now. Higgins has been South Fremantle's No. 1 ruckman ever since joining the Bulldogs from East Perth where he made 31 league appearances up until the end of 2013 after making his league debut in 2011. The big men depth at East Perth both from inside the Royals and from West Coast always meant that Higgins would find it hard to maintain a regular place in the side. That was highlighted when he missed the 2013 finals series having played 14 games during the home and away season. Read More ...

Neates proud to be celebrating 100 games at Tigerland

Friday, August 11, 2017 - 7:52 AM - by Chris Pike
CLAREMONT wingman Ryan Neates will play his first league game at the redeveloped Claremont Oval on Saturday in what happens to be his 100th WAFL appearance but his focus is on trying to help the Tigers remain in the finals race. While there have been injury troubles along the way that have delayed his reaching 100 games and cost him the chance to play in a WAFL premiership, Neates has put together an outstanding career not just with the 99 matches at Claremont but playing in the AFL for the West Coast Eagles and also representing Western Australia on three occasions. Neates was always earmarked as a player of the future representing WA at both State 16s and 18s level before going on to make his league debut at Claremont in 2010 and finding himself listed with the Eagles. Thursday, August 10, 2017 - 8:30 AM
In a first for WA and what may very well be a first for Australia, the Peel Football Umpires Association (PFUA) recently fielded an all-female umpiring panel to officiate a men’s football match. It was a truly momentous occasion for Lara Smith, Jamie-Lee Spence, Kylie Podlaha, Zowie Loo, Sarah Kerry, Molly Tingey and Tegan Bartlett who together umpired the Colts match between South Mandurah and Halls Head at Falcon Oval. Smith who has umpired for the PFUA since 2001 said it was a unifying moment for the group who braided each other’s pig-tales to celebrate the occasion. Read More ...

Round 20 – West Perth v East Perth Match Report

Monday, August 7, 2017 - 1:17 AM - by Chris Pike
WEST Perth started well enough but East Perth went on a staggering run of kicking 15 consecutive goals to set up an 84-point thumping of its arch rivals at HBF Arena on Saturday and to replace the Falcons in fifth position in the process.   Fifth position went on the line at HBF Arena on Saturday and every indication was that a close game was in order through the first quarter with West Perth actually managing to lead at quarter-time by eight points.   But the Falcons wouldn’t score again until the 18-minute mark of the third quarter and wouldn’t kick another goal until the opening minute of the fourth term. Round 20 – Perth v Claremont Match Report

Monday, August 7, 2017 - 1:10 AM - by Chris Pike
PERTH once again started strongly but couldn’t keep it going with Claremont keeping its season alive with a confidence-boosting 99-point thrashing of the Demons at Lathlain Park on Saturday.   Unfortunately for Perth, Saturday's game followed a familiar trend with the Demons starting well and even leading at quarter-time but then being overrun and suffering a disappointing defeat.   All that was amplified on Saturday with Perth doing well to lead by five points after an impressive first quarter. Round 20 – South Fremantle v East Fremantle Match Report

Monday, August 7, 2017 - 1:04 AM - by Chris Pike
EAST Fremantle battled hard but ultimately South Fremantle's quality shone through with the Bulldogs winning the third and final derby of 2017 by 45 points at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday.   Following South Fremantle's 145-point WA Day Foundation Derby hammering of East Fremantle, neither team expected anything close to the same coming into Saturday's contest in the last derby contest of 2017.   East Fremantle certainly was far more committed and looked capable of being vastly more competitive, which they were, but South Fremantle went on goal kicking sprees at the end of the opening three quarters to maintain a handy lead. Round 20 – Subiaco v Swan Districts Match Report

Monday, August 7, 2017 - 1:00 AM - by Chris Pike
MISSING a host of important players wasn’t enough to slow Subiaco's momentum with the Lions stamping their authority over Swan Districts early on Saturday at Leederville Oval and going on to win a 17th straight match by 29 points.   Subiaco might have been down a little on manpower, but the depth at the Lions mean that it's hardly a concern. They dominated the first half against Swans and then led by 37 points early in the third term before going on to win 11.17 (83) to 8.6 (54).   It was a dominant performance all-round by Subiaco and if it hadn’t been for the inaccurate goalkicking the margin of 29 points could have been considerably more.
