THE 2017 wafl.com.au Team of the Year has been finalised, with the best 22 players plus three emergencies named based on weekly nominations throughout the McDonald’s WAFL Premiership season. Each round during the season, a Team of the Round was named on wafl.com.au, with 192 different players named at least once across the 23 weeks, making them eligible for selection in the overall Team of the Year. The Team of the Year has been selected based not only on the number of times each player was selected in the Team of the Round, but also on their playing positions and strengths to achieve the best overall team of 2017 WAFL players. Finals victory a good reward for Harding's outstanding service

GREG Harding was deserving of coaching Swan Districts to at least one WAFL finals victory and he got that in his second last game as senior coach as a good reward for the tremendous work he has done during difficult and challenging times for the club since the 2010 premiership. Harding took over as senior coach at Swan Districts in 2011 with Swans coming off a grand final appearance in 2008, preliminary final in 2009 and then the remarkable premiership triumph in 2010. He had been assistant coach to Brian Dawson during those three years while also successfully coaching the colts, so he was the ideal fit to continue Swans on the path that they had been on. Benefits of footy go beyond physical health

Indigenous adults who play football are healthier, happier and better connected, according to a new Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre report on Indigenous participation in AFL. The Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre’s (BCEC’s) latest report, After the Siren: The community benefits of Indigenous participation in Australian Rules Football, examines the physical health, mental wellbeing and community connectedness benefits that flow from playing football.  Click here to download the report. Thunder coach Shepherd extends contract for another two years

Peel Thunder has reappointed Cam Shepherd as the Club’s Senior Coach for a further two years.  Peel Thunder Football Club CEO John Ditchburn said the club was delighted to extend Shepherd's tenure. “Cam has developed into an outstanding coach, rewarding the Club with its first final appearance, first Premiership and another Grand Final appearance in 2017.”  Ditchburn said.   Read More ...

Semi Finals Reserves and Colts Wrap

SOUTH Fremantle's reserves team and East Fremantle's colts are straight through to the WAFL Grand Finals for 2017 following second semi-final victories on Sunday while the season is over for Swan Districts in all grades. The colts action on Sunday began with the cut-throat first semi-final between East Perth and Swan Districts at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with the Royals proving too strong ending the season of Swans with the 16.15 (111) to 2.11 (23) victory. Then in the colts second semi-final at Leederville Oval, minor premiers East Fremantle came off the break in the first week of the finals beating Claremont 12.7 (79) to 9.10 (64). Read More ...


Second Semi-Final – Subiaco v Peel Thunder Match Report

PEEL Thunder ended Subiaco's remarkable 19-game winning streak and won its own sixth straight WAFL final downing the Lions by 24 points on Sunday in the second semi-final at Leederville Oval to move into the 2017 Grand Final.   Having never previously won a final in the club's history little over 12 months ago, Peel has won four in succession having gone all the way through last year's finals series beating East Perth, West Perth, South Fremantle and Subiaco on the way to the historic premiership.   Now the Thunder have beaten the top two teams of 2017 already this finals series with victories over South Fremantle and Subiaco to be the first team through to the 2017 Grand Final at Domain Stadium on Sunday September 24. REIGNING premiers Peel Thunder are the first team through to the WAFL Grand Final for 2017 after beating Subiaco in the second semi-final with the Lions to meet South Fremantle in the preliminary final. It was semi-final day in the WAFL on Sunday and the action started at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with the first semi-final between South Fremantle and Swan Districts. First Semi-Final – South Fremantle v Swan Districts Match Report

SOUTH Fremantle responded in emphatic fashion from its qualifying final loss beating Swan Districts by 80 points in the first semi-final at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday.   After having such an impressive home and away season ending with a nine-game winning streak for a 16-4 record and to be in second position, the pressure was back on South Fremantle to beat Swan Districts on Sunday in the first semi-final on home turf.   The Bulldogs had lost by 18 points in the qualifying final last Saturday while Swans were coming in off the high of a strong performance to beat West Perth in the elimination final at Steel Blue Oval last Sunday setting up an intriguing cut-throat contest. Peel Thunder through to WAFL Grand Final

PEEL Thunder are aiming for back-to-back WAFL Premierships after progressing to the Grand Final on Sunday, September 24 with a four-goal win over Subiaco in the 2nd Semi-Final at Leederville Oval today. Peel now have the week off while Subiaco will host South Fremantle in the Preliminary Final next Sunday at Leederville Oval. South Fremantle were convincing 80-point winners over Swan Districts in the 1st Semi-Final at Fremantle Oval in front of a crowd of 3884 people. Read More ...

IT is semi-final Sunday in the WAFL with Subiaco and Peel Thunder attempting to be the first team to qualify for the 2017 Grand Final while South Fremantle and Swan Districts are fighting just to stay alive. SUBIACO have done all they can to be as prepared as possible for Sunday's second semi-final against Peel coming off the break while welcoming back Clancy Wheeler and Kyal Horsley with coach Jarrad Schofield looking forward to another finals crack against the Thunder. The Lions have once again been the standout WAFL team in 2017 but entering the AHG WAFL Finals Series on a 19-game winning streak is a remarkable achievement that earned them a third straight minor premiership. Subiaco can now move into a fourth successive Grand Final by beating Peel on Sunday at Leederville Oval but once again standing in its way is a Thunder line-up strengthened with 15 AFL-listed players from Fremantle. Clutterbuck glad to pay back faith Swans showed in him

FREDDIE Clutterbuck hasn’t quite rediscovered the form that made him a staple on the wing at East Perth for over 100 games since joining Swan Districts but he delivered a standout performance in last Sunday elimination final and he couldn’t have enjoyed the experience more. Clutterbuck joined Swan Districts at the start of the 2016 WAFL season having previously played 104 matches with East Perth including the 2014 grand final after growing frustrated with the Royals' alignment with West Coast. While he did play some good football in 2016 with Swans, he was never quite able to hit full gear after not being allowed to do a pre-season with his new club. Read More ...


Experienced leaders driving the winning culture with Peel

IT is hard to ignore the tremendous job Peel Thunder coach Cam Shepherd has done to pull his group together for what is now a third consecutive WAFL finals campaign and he feels the key is having a strong group of experienced players setting the tone. Three years ago Peel had never played in a WAFL final and never really threatened to do so and there were question marks over whether or not the partnership of the Thunder with Fremantle would breed success either consider the players wouldn’t get to train together and had different ambitions long-term. However, the job that Shepherd has now done in particular over the past three years must be admired and it began with Peel's maiden finals appearance in 2015. Read More ...
