Lions much happier with finals preparation than 12 months ago

Saturday, September 9, 2017 - 10:41 PM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO have done all they can to be as prepared as possible for Sunday's second semi-final against Peel coming off the break while welcoming back Clancy Wheeler and Kyal Horsley with coach Jarrad Schofield looking forward to another finals crack against the Thunder. The Lions have once again been the standout WAFL team in 2017 but entering the AHG WAFL Finals Series on a 19-game winning streak is a remarkable achievement that earned them a third straight minor premiership. Subiaco can now move into a fourth successive Grand Final by beating Peel on Sunday at Leederville Oval but once again standing in its way is a Thunder line-up strengthened with 15 AFL-listed players from Fremantle. Clutterbuck glad to pay back faith Swans showed in him

Saturday, September 9, 2017 - 6:52 PM - by Chris Pike
FREDDIE Clutterbuck hasn’t quite rediscovered the form that made him a staple on the wing at East Perth for over 100 games since joining Swan Districts but he delivered a standout performance in last Sunday elimination final and he couldn’t have enjoyed the experience more. Clutterbuck joined Swan Districts at the start of the 2016 WAFL season having previously played 104 matches with East Perth including the 2014 grand final after growing frustrated with the Royals' alignment with West Coast. While he did play some good football in 2016 with Swans, he was never quite able to hit full gear after not being allowed to do a pre-season with his new club. Read More ...

Experienced leaders driving the winning culture with Peel

Saturday, September 9, 2017 - 6:38 PM - by Chris Pike
IT is hard to ignore the tremendous job Peel Thunder coach Cam Shepherd has done to pull his group together for what is now a third consecutive WAFL finals campaign and he feels the key is having a strong group of experienced players setting the tone. Three years ago Peel had never played in a WAFL final and never really threatened to do so and there were question marks over whether or not the partnership of the Thunder with Fremantle would breed success either consider the players wouldn’t get to train together and had different ambitions long-term. However, the job that Shepherd has now done in particular over the past three years must be admired and it began with Peel's maiden finals appearance in 2015. Read More ...

Proud Bulldog McIntosh reaches 100 in first finals campaign

Saturday, September 9, 2017 - 5:11 PM - by Chris Pike
HAVING to undergo a knee reconstruction and come back from a badly broken ankle have made the journey far from easy and a form slump in 2014 had him doubting himself, but South Fremantle defender Adam McIntosh is proud to reach 100 games as he aims for finals success. McIntosh made his league debut with South Fremantle back in 2011 having had to do a significant apprenticeship to earn that chance under dual premiership coach John Dimmer, but his first stint was short-lived to do a knee injury suffered early in Round 5 against Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval. He was back for the start of 2012 and aside from a stint in the reserves in the back half of 2014 and then missing the second half of 2016 with his horrible broken ankle, McIntosh has cemented himself as one of the most consistent and reliable mid-size defenders in the WAFL. A WAFL Grand Final spot goes on the line on Sunday at Leederville with the dominant team of the past four years Subiaco hosting the reigning premiers Peel Thunder who has won five consecutive finals. It shapes as a fascinating contest whatever way you look at it with Subiaco coming into the game having dominated the home and away season with 19 straight wins before the bye last week. But it was last Saturday when Peel showed it is a genuine chance at back-to-back premierships with a strong 18-point victory over a South Fremantle team who had won nine straight games to finish season. THE seasons of South Fremantle and Swan Districts go on the line Sunday in the first semi-final at Fremantle Community Bank Oval and while the Swans are going in on a high, the pressure is back on the highly-fancied Bulldogs. The Bulldogs hosted last Saturday's qualifying final against Peel Thunder but went down by 18 points to need to beat Swans this Sunday to avoid what would be a disappointing straight sets finals exit given the season they have had. Elimination Final – Swan Districts v West Perth Match Report

Monday, September 4, 2017 - 11:40 AM - by Chris Pike
SWAN Districts had to turn around disappointing form heading into the finals but with the motivation of a 200-game milestone and the retirement of a favourite son, they delivered a terrific performance to beat West Perth by 15 points in front of a big crowd at Steel Blue Oval.   Swan Districts qualified for the AHG WAFL Finals Series in fourth position but had lost four straight games including a 61-point loss to the lowly East Fremantle last Saturday so it was always going to take something special to turn that around on Sunday.   West Perth might not have been in much better form losing seven of 10 games entering the finals too, but the Falcons were a team used to being there come finals time and who appeared better equipped coming into the contest. Qualifying Final - South Fremantle v Peel Thunder Match Report

Monday, September 4, 2017 - 11:02 AM - by Chris Pike
PEEL Thunder has won its fifth straight WAFL final to now be one win from back-to-back grand final appearances after a strong 18-point victory against South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday.   South Fremantle came into the qualifying final on home turf at Fremantle Community Bank Oval and on a nine-game winning streak, but slow starts have been the problem for the Bulldogs at different times this season and it was again the case on Saturday.   It wasn’t so much that South Fremantle started slowly this time, but it was the sheer intensity that Peel came out with and their hardness at the contest and pressure they put on the Bulldogs that made life challenging for the home side.
