Bulldog Hockey hoping to advance to first career Grand Final

REIGNING South Fremantle fairest and best winner Shane Hockey holds himself to high standards so he was as disappointed as anyone following the qualifying final loss to Peel, but he bounced back emphatically and now is desperate to play in the first Grand Final of his senior career. Hockey joined South Fremantle from VFL club Frankston last year and had an outstanding first season in the WAFL claiming the Bulldogs' fairest and best award and getting to play finals at senior level for the first time in his career. Previously the last final he had played in was a 10-goal loss for Mornington under-18s against Frankston YCW. But all South Fremantle's preliminary final exit last year at the hands of Peel Thunder did was make Hockey's desire to achieve the ultimate even stronger coming into 2017. Read More ...


Earning Grand Final spot now Subiaco's sole focus

AFTER shaking off the disappointment of losing to Peel Thunder last Sunday, all Subiaco coach Jarrad Schofield is focused on now is bouncing back against South Fremantle in Sunday's preliminary final to book a spot in a fourth straight WAFL Grand Final. Subiaco entered last Sunday's second semi-final on the back of a 19-game winning streak and a week off in the opening weekend of the finals, but the Thunder led them from start to finish to end up winning by 24 points. That saw Peel move into a second straight Grand Final but Subiaco's' outstanding 19-1 season to earn a third straight minor premiership means they have another shot to make a fourth consecutive premiership decider by beating South Fremantle in Sunday's preliminary final in Leederville Oval. Bulldogs coach, players desperate for Grand Final experience

SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley is chasing his first Grand Final appearance as a coach with all but four of his squad desperate to reach their first one as well with the Bulldogs feeling buoyant heading into Sunday's preliminary final against Subiaco. Curley is in his sixth year as a senior coach in the WAFL having previously spent three years at West Perth and now he is in his third season with South Fremantle on the back of a playing career that included two premierships with the Falcons on top of 118 games in the AFL with Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs. He is about to coach in his third preliminary final in that time after a heartbreaking loss to Swan Districts in 2008 after leading by 35 points and then last year's loss to Peel Thunder. 2017 wafl.com.au Team of the Year

THE 2017 wafl.com.au Team of the Year has been finalised, with the best 22 players plus three emergencies named based on weekly nominations throughout the McDonald’s WAFL Premiership season. Each round during the season, a Team of the Round was named on wafl.com.au, with 192 different players named at least once across the 23 weeks, making them eligible for selection in the overall Team of the Year. The Team of the Year has been selected based not only on the number of times each player was selected in the Team of the Round, but also on their playing positions and strengths to achieve the best overall team of 2017 WAFL players. Finals victory a good reward for Harding's outstanding service

GREG Harding was deserving of coaching Swan Districts to at least one WAFL finals victory and he got that in his second last game as senior coach as a good reward for the tremendous work he has done during difficult and challenging times for the club since the 2010 premiership. Harding took over as senior coach at Swan Districts in 2011 with Swans coming off a grand final appearance in 2008, preliminary final in 2009 and then the remarkable premiership triumph in 2010. He had been assistant coach to Brian Dawson during those three years while also successfully coaching the colts, so he was the ideal fit to continue Swans on the path that they had been on. Indigenous adults who play football are healthier, happier and better connected, according to a new Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre report on Indigenous participation in AFL. The Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre’s (BCEC’s) latest report, After the Siren: The community benefits of Indigenous participation in Australian Rules Football, examines the physical health, mental wellbeing and community connectedness benefits that flow from playing football.  Click here to download the report. Thunder coach Shepherd extends contract for another two years

Semi Finals Reserves and Colts Wrap

SOUTH Fremantle's reserves team and East Fremantle's colts are straight through to the WAFL Grand Finals for 2017 following second semi-final victories on Sunday while the season is over for Swan Districts in all grades. The colts action on Sunday began with the cut-throat first semi-final between East Perth and Swan Districts at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with the Royals proving too strong ending the season of Swans with the 16.15 (111) to 2.11 (23) victory. Then in the colts second semi-final at Leederville Oval, minor premiers East Fremantle came off the break in the first week of the finals beating Claremont 12.7 (79) to 9.10 (64). Read More ...


Second Semi-Final – Subiaco v Peel Thunder Match Report

PEEL Thunder ended Subiaco's remarkable 19-game winning streak and won its own sixth straight WAFL final downing the Lions by 24 points on Sunday in the second semi-final at Leederville Oval to move into the 2017 Grand Final.   Having never previously won a final in the club's history little over 12 months ago, Peel has won four in succession having gone all the way through last year's finals series beating East Perth, West Perth, South Fremantle and Subiaco on the way to the historic premiership.   Now the Thunder have beaten the top two teams of 2017 already this finals series with victories over South Fremantle and Subiaco to be the first team through to the 2017 Grand Final at Domain Stadium on Sunday September 24. REIGNING premiers Peel Thunder are the first team through to the WAFL Grand Final for 2017 after beating Subiaco in the second semi-final with the Lions to meet South Fremantle in the preliminary final. It was semi-final day in the WAFL on Sunday and the action started at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with the first semi-final between South Fremantle and Swan Districts. SOUTH Fremantle responded in emphatic fashion from its qualifying final loss beating Swan Districts by 80 points in the first semi-final at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday.   After having such an impressive home and away season ending with a nine-game winning streak for a 16-4 record and to be in second position, the pressure was back on South Fremantle to beat Swan Districts on Sunday in the first semi-final on home turf.   The Bulldogs had lost by 18 points in the qualifying final last Saturday while Swans were coming in off the high of a strong performance to beat West Perth in the elimination final at Steel Blue Oval last Sunday setting up an intriguing cut-throat contest. Peel Thunder through to WAFL Grand Final

PEEL Thunder are aiming for back-to-back WAFL Premierships after progressing to the Grand Final on Sunday, September 24 with a four-goal win over Subiaco in the 2nd Semi-Final at Leederville Oval today. Peel now have the week off while Subiaco will host South Fremantle in the Preliminary Final next Sunday at Leederville Oval. South Fremantle were convincing 80-point winners over Swan Districts in the 1st Semi-Final at Fremantle Oval in front of a crowd of 3884 people. Read More ...
