WAFL Round 20 match reports

SUBIACO made it 17 straight wins and South Fremantle seven in-a-row while East Perth and Claremont recorded near triple-figure thumpings as the battle over fifth position reaches fever pitch. All four Round 20 WAFL matches took place on Saturday afternoon with Subiaco and South Fremantle continuing their winning ways even though first and second position on the WAFL ladder is secured for both clubs with three weeks of the home and away season remaining. But it's lower down in the top five where things are getting really interesting. East Perth moved into fifth with a big win over West Perth while Claremont also kept its finals hopes alive with the thrashing of Perth. Read More ...


WAFC Media Statement on Umpiring

The West Australian Football Commission wishes to clarify that steps being taken to review umpiring, as outlined in The West Australian newspaper on August 4, are part of a planned and pro-active approach stemming from recommendations in the Structural Review of Football, which highlights the importance of umpires to our game. WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor said the umpire survey, engagement and consultancy work being undertaken would ensure there is a clear understanding of opportunities for improvement so that strategies to engage, retain and develop WA umpires at all levels can continue to be enhanced. “We want to ensure that more than 2500 umpires who are critical to our game in WA are provided with the right support, coaching and and game day environments to undertake the important work they do,” Mr Taylor said. Round 20 Preview - Perth v Claremont

ONE of Perth's two wins this season did come against Claremont so the Demons will attempt to repeat that on Saturday at Lathlain Park to get off the bottom of the ladder but that would spell the end of the Tigers' season. Following last week's loss to East Perth at Claremont Oval by four points, Claremont can't afford any more slip ups between now and the end of the season if the Tigers hope to return to finals action in 2017. Perth might not be in finals contention with just the two wins from 17 attempts this season, but the Demons did climb from the bottom of the ladder despite having the bye last week. Mundella Women's finals kicking off

The Mundella WA Women's Football League finals get underway this weekend with League, Reserves and Rogers Cup semi-finals being played on Sunday, August 6. Round 20 Preview - West Perth v East Perth

WEST Perth and East Perth have become accustomed to taking part in derbies with plenty at stake in recent years and that's again the case on Saturday at HBF Arena with fifth position on the line. The winner of Saturday's Round 20 clash at HBF Arena will take a significant leap towards playing finals in 2017 setting the stage for a terrific contest for those in attendance and then those watching also live on 7mate from 2.30pm. West Perth comes into the game currently occupying fifth position on the WAFL ladder with an 8-8 record but following last week's 47-point loss to South Fremantle, the Falcons are now vulnerable inside the top five. Round 19 Preview - South Fremantle v East Fremantle

SOUTH Fremantle is on a six-game winning streak and has won the last three derbies against East Fremantle but the Sharks will be looking to make up for what happened on WA Day and getting off the bottom of the ladder in the process. South Fremantle looks all but secured of finishing in second position come the end of the season entering Saturday's derby at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with a 13-4 record and six-game winning streak. Round 20 Preview - Subiaco v Swan Districts

SUBIACO has taken on every challenge so far this season with the Lions back to Leederville Oval on Saturday shooting for a 17th straight win but Swan Districts will be primed for the task with third spot the prize. Subiaco is in the middle of a dominant 16-game winning streak but the Lions do lose another couple of important players this week ahead of hosting Swans on Saturday at Leederville ahead of a bye in Round 21. No matter of personnel issues have stopped Subiaco so far in 2017 given its 16 matches won in-a-row at an average of 42.5 points, but they do face an in-form Swan Districts on Saturday. WAFL Round 20 teams and previews

THE last month of 2017 WAFL season gets underway with Round 20 on Saturday with West Perth and East Perth fighting over fifth position, Swan Districts and East Fremantle trying to end the winning runs of the top teams and Claremont in a must-win situation. That sets the scene for four crucial matches on Saturday as part of Round 20 with the stakes getting increasingly higher the closer to the end of the season we get. Subiaco will host Swan Districts at Leederville Oval with the Lions looking for a 17th consecutive victory. KICKING bags of goals and doing the spectacular has always come naturally to Ben Saunders and while he is still more than capable, as he approaches his 100th WAFL game it's doing the team things with the aim of the ultimate success that is now motivating him. The Mt Barker native began his career at Claremont coming through the ranks as a supremely talented goalkicker capable of kicking big bags, kicking the impossible goals and taking spectacular marks. Students get footy tips from Nic Nat

More than 1,200 students from diverse backgrounds participated in the West Australian Football Commission’s (WAFC) AFL Multicultural Gala Day on Monday, July 31, where they got to meet special guests from the West Coast Eagles, including AFL Multicultural Ambassador Nic Naitanui. Students from Years 4-6 took part in a number of football skill workshops in carnivals held in three locations across the metropolitan area including North Beach, Thornlie and Kardinya. Footy returns to the WACA

More than 3,000 Auskickers, parents and coaches converged on the iconic WACA Ground for the WA Football Commission’s inaugural Auskick Festival on Sunday, July 30. The event, delivered in partnership with the WACA, saw 44 Auskick teams participate in a series of NAB AFL Auskick games and T20 Blast activations, with ‘having a go’ being the common theme of the day. Initially developed by WAFC Development staff and WACA Regional staff, the event aimed to promote NAB AFL Auskick and support the transition between Year 2 Auskick and the WAFC Year 3s competition. SOME wet weather greeted Saturday's Round 19 WAFL action but there were again some outstanding performers with a host of Subiaco and South Fremantle starring as the top two teams continued winning streaks and veteran midfielder Matt Riggio led Swan Districts to a crucial win. All four Round 19 WAFL matches took place on Saturday afternoon with Swan Districts finishing strongly to close in on third position with an 11.6 (72) to 8.8 (56) win over Peel Thunder at Steel Blue Oval. Matt Riggio starred with 29 possessions. South Fremantle won its sixth straight match and beat West Perth for a sixth consecutive time with a 20.6 (126) to 11.13 (79) victory at Fremantle Community Bank Oval. Read More ...


WA players impress at AFL National Inclusion Carnival

Two West Australian players have received All-Australian selection following the 2017 AFL National Inclusion Carnival held on the Gold Coast last month. Fillip Ranieri and Raphael Gould were among the 18-player squad selected after the carnival. WA finished third in Pool B of the carnival with three wins from five matches played across five days.
