Thursday, August 10, 2017 - 8:30 AM
In a first for WA and what may very well be a first for Australia, the Peel Football Umpires Association (PFUA) recently fielded an all-female umpiring panel to officiate a men’s football match. It was a truly momentous occasion for Lara Smith, Jamie-Lee Spence, Kylie Podlaha, Zowie Loo, Sarah Kerry, Molly Tingey and Tegan Bartlett who together umpired the Colts match between South Mandurah and Halls Head at Falcon Oval. Smith who has umpired for the PFUA since 2001 said it was a unifying moment for the group who braided each other’s pig-tales to celebrate the occasion. Read More ...

Round 20 – West Perth v East Perth Match Report

Monday, August 7, 2017 - 1:17 AM - by Chris Pike
WEST Perth started well enough but East Perth went on a staggering run of kicking 15 consecutive goals to set up an 84-point thumping of its arch rivals at HBF Arena on Saturday and to replace the Falcons in fifth position in the process.   Fifth position went on the line at HBF Arena on Saturday and every indication was that a close game was in order through the first quarter with West Perth actually managing to lead at quarter-time by eight points.   But the Falcons wouldn’t score again until the 18-minute mark of the third quarter and wouldn’t kick another goal until the opening minute of the fourth term. Round 20 – Perth v Claremont Match Report

Monday, August 7, 2017 - 1:10 AM - by Chris Pike
PERTH once again started strongly but couldn’t keep it going with Claremont keeping its season alive with a confidence-boosting 99-point thrashing of the Demons at Lathlain Park on Saturday.   Unfortunately for Perth, Saturday's game followed a familiar trend with the Demons starting well and even leading at quarter-time but then being overrun and suffering a disappointing defeat.   All that was amplified on Saturday with Perth doing well to lead by five points after an impressive first quarter. Round 20 – South Fremantle v East Fremantle Match Report

Monday, August 7, 2017 - 1:04 AM - by Chris Pike
EAST Fremantle battled hard but ultimately South Fremantle's quality shone through with the Bulldogs winning the third and final derby of 2017 by 45 points at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday.   Following South Fremantle's 145-point WA Day Foundation Derby hammering of East Fremantle, neither team expected anything close to the same coming into Saturday's contest in the last derby contest of 2017.   East Fremantle certainly was far more committed and looked capable of being vastly more competitive, which they were, but South Fremantle went on goal kicking sprees at the end of the opening three quarters to maintain a handy lead. Round 20 – Subiaco v Swan Districts Match Report

Monday, August 7, 2017 - 1:00 AM - by Chris Pike
MISSING a host of important players wasn’t enough to slow Subiaco's momentum with the Lions stamping their authority over Swan Districts early on Saturday at Leederville Oval and going on to win a 17th straight match by 29 points.   Subiaco might have been down a little on manpower, but the depth at the Lions mean that it's hardly a concern. They dominated the first half against Swans and then led by 37 points early in the third term before going on to win 11.17 (83) to 8.6 (54).   It was a dominant performance all-round by Subiaco and if it hadn’t been for the inaccurate goalkicking the margin of 29 points could have been considerably more. All four Round 20 WAFL matches took place on Saturday afternoon with Subiaco and South Fremantle continuing their winning ways even though first and second position on the WAFL ladder is secured for both clubs with three weeks of the home and away season remaining. But it's lower down in the top five where things are getting really interesting. East Perth moved into fifth with a big win over West Perth while Claremont also kept its finals hopes alive with the thrashing of Perth. Read More ...

WAFC Media Statement on Umpiring

Friday, August 4, 2017 - 4:57 PM
The West Australian Football Commission wishes to clarify that steps being taken to review umpiring, as outlined in The West Australian newspaper on August 4, are part of a planned and pro-active approach stemming from recommendations in the Structural Review of Football, which highlights the importance of umpires to our game. WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor said the umpire survey, engagement and consultancy work being undertaken would ensure there is a clear understanding of opportunities for improvement so that strategies to engage, retain and develop WA umpires at all levels can continue to be enhanced. “We want to ensure that more than 2500 umpires who are critical to our game in WA are provided with the right support, coaching and and game day environments to undertake the important work they do,” Mr Taylor said. Round 20 Preview - Perth v Claremont

Friday, August 4, 2017 - 4:49 PM - by Chris Pike
ONE of Perth's two wins this season did come against Claremont so the Demons will attempt to repeat that on Saturday at Lathlain Park to get off the bottom of the ladder but that would spell the end of the Tigers' season. Following last week's loss to East Perth at Claremont Oval by four points, Claremont can't afford any more slip ups between now and the end of the season if the Tigers hope to return to finals action in 2017. Perth might not be in finals contention with just the two wins from 17 attempts this season, but the Demons did climb from the bottom of the ladder despite having the bye last week. East Fremantle's percentage slipped below that of the Demons. Read More ...
