2016 WAFL Talent Carnival

Over the past two weeks over 1500 players from 50 teams participated in the annual WAFL Talent Carnival for Year 8, 9 and 10s. The carnival is conducted each year between the nine WAFL Clubs and the South West Academy of Sport. Teams in the Year 8 and Year 9 formats were run with two squads with the Year 10 group having one squad only. The AFL Grand Final is by far the biggest, most exciting event on the Australian Football Rules calendar. It’s a day where the country’s footy family comes together to witness the very best players of the competition battle it out for the Premiership Cup.   Thirteen-year-old West Perth junior umpire Jamie Wedgwood got the chance to experience the major clash in the flesh after he was awarded the 2016 WA Rookie Umpire of the Year award for his outstanding efforts and commitment to the sport.   “I never thought I would ever be involved in something so cool,” Wedgwood said. WA players in spotlight at AFL Draft Combine

WA players impressed at the NAB AFL National Draft Combine in Melbourne from October 6 to 9, ranking in the top 10 for numerous skill, agility and endurance tests. Swan Districts player Griffin Logue featured prominently across the four days, finishing equal first in the beep test and running vertical jump (right foot), fourth in the standing vertical jump, fifth in the 3km time trial and seventh in the repeat sprint. East Perth's Sam Powell-Pepper showcased his talent as the only player to score a perfect 30 out of 30 in the goalkicking test, while also coming third in the agility test, sixth in the beep test and scoring 27 out of 30 in the clean hands test. Liam Anthony claims Lynn Medal for first time

EAST Fremantle's first WAFL season under new coach Rob Wiley didn’t go to plan but Liam Anthony couldn’t have done more to try and get the Sharks back into the finals and was rewarded with the Lynn Medal on Friday night. Anthony took out East Fremantle's fairest and best award in a thrilling vote count with him claiming the Lynn Medal by receiving six votes in the final round to overtake the leader George Hampson who was absent due to a hamstring injury. Hampson's absence didn’t help East Fremantle's cause in attempting to beat East Perth but it was good news for Anthony who picked up 34 possessions in the game. That was enough for him to cap off a strong and consistent season with the Sharks to win his first Lynn Medal. Read More ...


Phelan wins second straight Outridge Medal with Subiaco

CHRIS Phelan continued to build his reputation as an all-time great of the Subiaco Football Club adding a second fairest and best award to his collection by winning the Outridge Medal for 2016 on Friday night. Phelan became the first man since Dwayne Lamb in 1984-5 to claim back-to-back Outridge Medal awards when he was named Subiaco's fairest and best winner for a 2016 that saw the Lions make another WAFL Grand Final. Subiaco came into 2016 having won the last two WAFL premierships and the Lions were the standout team throughout the season again finishing as minor premiers. Read More ...


Bolton adds Tigers fairest and best to Simpson, Sandover Medals

JYE Bolton's remarkable first season in the WAFL with Claremont has concluded with the star midfielder claiming the Tigers' fairest and best award to add to the Sandover and Simpson Medals he already received in 2016. Bolton claimed the EB Cook Medal as Claremont's fairest and best player for 2016 to cap an outstanding first season in the WAFL having crossed from Werribee in the VFL. But he wasn’t the only reason for Claremont to celebrate the season at the awards night on Friday with the Tigers' reserves and colts having both won premierships in 2016 with each team defeating East Perth in the Grand Finals at Domain Stadium almost a fortnight ago. Shane Hockey wins WJ Hughes Medal in first Bulldogs season

SOUTH Fremantle recruit Shane Hockey capped a stunning first WAFL season with the Bulldogs by claiming the WJ Hughes Medal on Friday night just ahead of Marlion Pickett and Steve Verrier. South Fremantle's league, reserves and colts teams all played in the WAFL finals in 2016 leading the Bulldogs to claiming the Rodriguez Shield as the strongest performing club in the competition. That outstanding all-round season was celebrated on Friday night at Fremantle Community Bank Oval in the Griff John Function Centre with the presentation of the fairest and best awards for all three grades. New appointments for Deppro WA State Academy

The West Australian Football Commission has continued its commitment to ensuring WA’s talent pathway aspires to the highest possible standards with the appointment of former AFL Assistant Coaches Peter Sumich and Tony Micale to new roles with the Deppro WA State Academy. Sumich has been appointed as Coach Coordinator State 18s and Micale as Coach Coordinator State 16s. These new roles will include coaching WA’s respective sides at the NAB AFL National Championships, as well as the WAFL coaches linked to each age group. West Australian Football Commission Executive Manager Football Operations Jon Haines congratulated Sumich and Micale on their appointments and said both would offer a wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise to talent development in WA. Departing Falcon Rohan Kerr proud of four West Perth seasons

RECRUITING from interstate can be somewhat of a lottery for WAFL clubs but West Perth struck gold with Rohan Kerr who has delivered a tremendous consistent four years as a highly-skilled, prolific ball winning star. Kerr was drafted to Carlton from the Dandenong Stingrays in 2009 and spent three years at the Blues without breaking through for an AFL debut but when he was delisted it was a fresh start he was after. But even he couldn’t imagine that upon moving to Western Australia and join West Perth that by the time a new job meant playing WAFL football would become impossible four years later that he would be calling Perth home for the foreseeable future. The WA State Indigenous football team has claimed the 2016 Female Kickstart title after the side defeated Queensland in its Grand Final clash at the 2016 National Female Diversity Championships. Horsley's reputation grows in heroic Grand Final display

IT is not often that a multiple premiership winner can further enhance his reputation in a losing Grand Final but that is exactly the case with Subiaco captain Kyal Horsley after a heroic performance in Sunday's loss to Peel Thunder. Sunday's Grand Final didn’t go to plan for Subiaco with Peel creating history by winning its first ever WAFL premiership leading from start to finish to win by 23 points, but it wasn’t without a remarkable individual performance by Horsley. Subiaco was attempting to make history itself by winning two premiership hat-tricks inside an 11-year period with the Lions having won the last two flags on the way to the 2016 minor premiership. Ugle's leadership grows into becoming historic premiership captain

GERALD Ugle was a little unsure of being Peel Thunder captain at the start of the season but now he will go down in history as the club's first ever premiership skipper and he couldn't be more proud. Ugle joined Peel for the 2015 WAFL season and had a terrific campaign kicking 38 goals to help the Thunder to a historic first ever finals appearance.
