NAIDOC Round of the WAFL certainly wasn’t blessed with great weather but it did produce fascinating results with Claremont and Perth knocking off the top two teams, and arch rivals West Perth and East Perth winning to set up a tantalising derby this Saturday. Some terribly wet weather greeted the WAFL clubs in action on Saturday as they celebrated NAIDOC Week by wearing specially designed Indigenous jumpers for the occasion. Perth continued its strong resurgence by beating reigning premiers Subiaco 6.6 (42) to 4.3 (27) at Lathlain Park. The win is the third straight for the Demons, the first time they have done so since the opening three games of 2013. Claremont scored the other upset of the day beating the second placed South Fremantle 11.3 (69) to 5.8 (38) at Fremantle Community Bank Oval for their fourth win of 2016 on the back of a seven-goal to nil first half. On the back of an incredibly successful Term 2 Freo Dockers Cup competition, Darling Range Sports College and Bunbury SHS emerged victorious after taking out their respective divisions in the 2016 Freo Dockers Schoolgirls Cup. In very tough conditions, Darling Range made amends for last year’s grand final defeat by proving too strong for Clontarf Aboriginal College, running out victors by 38 points. On route to the Grand Final, Darling Range defeated John Forrest SHS and Mater Dei College, whilst Clontarf defeated Lumen Christi College and Halls Head College. After a week long battle against Pinjarra SHS, Northam SHS, Australind SHS and Bunbury CGS at Senior High Schools Country Week, a very slick and well drilled Bunbury SHS overpowered a gallant Newton Moore SHS to claim the Vanderweide division by 32 points. Former WAFL Assistant coach Michelle Cowan has been appointed senior coach of Fremantle Football Club's team in the AFL’s new national women’s league.  Cowan was the first female in Australia to coach at a state level in 2004 as a WAFL assistant at West Perth and more recently spent time as an assistant coach at South Fremantle from 2013-2015. Fremantle CEO Steve Rosich said Cowan was a standout choice to coach the club’s new women’s team, one of eight sides in the national league which is scheduled to start in 2017. “It’s a very exciting development for the club to have the inaugural WA team in the new national women’s league,” Rosich said. Perth Football Club's Ian Hill was announced DEPPRO WA State 16s MVP at the conclusion of the AFL National 16s Championships in Queensland today, Friday July 8. Hill starred in the forward line for WA with four goals against Victoria Country, one against South Australia and another three against Victoria Metro, while also showcasing his speed, skill and high-flying marking ability. WA finished the Championships as runners-up after defeating Victoria Country and Victoria Metro, but losing narrowly to South Australia, who remained undefeated to take out the Championship.
