Wednesday, April 29, 2015 - 7:57 PM - by Chris Pike
A MASSIVE weekend commemorating Anzac Round in the WAFL threw up some surprises and included seven goals coming from the most unlikely of sources, West Perth pulling off a stunning comeback, Peel continuing to win and East Fremantle winning the first derby of 2015. The round began on Saturday afternoon with the standalone Anzac Day clash and East Perth ended up beating Perth 20.18 (138) to 5.5 (35) in front of almost 2000 fans at Lathlain Park. Then on Sunday it was also a standalone fixture that saw Peel Thunder win a fourth straight match for the first time ever by beating the winless Claremont 16.12 (108) to 11.15 (81) at Mandurah's Bendigo Bank Stadium. There were two massive matches on Monday starting with West Perth kicking five goals in the last 10 minutes to come back from 26 points down to beat Swan Districts 12.12 (84) to 12.5 (77) at Joondalup's HBF Arena in front of a crowd of almost 3500. And finally at Fremantle Oval, East Fremantle kicked the first seven goals of the second quarter and that was enough to set up the eventual 13.15 (93) to 11.10 (76) victory in front of 5200 spectators. EAST Fremantle coach Steve Malaxos is looking forward to the first Fremantle derby of the season on the Anzac Day holiday on Monday and is glad to have new arrivals George Hampson and Liam Anthony at his disposal heading into the clash with South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval. Anzac Day WAFL Results

Saturday, April 25, 2015 - 10:49 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Perth needed to find goals from somewhere on Anzac Day against Perth at Lathlain Park but not even coach Brian Dawson would have been expecting seven of them from reliable defender Kyle Anderson in the 103-point win. With West Coast short on defenders in the AFL, the Eagles are looking for readymade replacements from East Perth and that meant that Callum Sinclair, Dylan Main, Paddy Brophy and Tom Barrass all played in the Royals' back-line against Perth on Anzac Day. Then with Josh Smith, Murray Newman and Josh Hill not there in East Perth's forward-line either, it was time to try something new for Dawson and his answer was to blood debutants Rowen Powell and Shayne Hille, and then surprisingly to throw his best defender Anderson to full-forward. Thunder look to make history on Sunday against Tigers

Saturday, April 25, 2015 - 12:01 PM - by Chris Pike
PEEL Thunder has a chance to make history by winning four straight matches for the first time ever and potentially jumping to the top of the WAFL, but coach Cam Shepherd isn’t taking Kepler Bradley and the winless Tigers lightly on Sunday at Bendigo Bank Stadium. Peel lost its first game of the season narrowly to West Perth at HBF Arena but has since recorded impressive wins over East Fremantle, Perth and East Perth to be on a three-game winning streak for just the third time in the club's history and first since 2009. The Thunder have never recorded four consecutive wins since entering the WAFL in 1997 nor have they ever sat on top of the ladder but both those things could change when they host the winless Claremont at Mandurah's Bendigo Bank Stadium in a standalone Anzac Round clash on Sunday.
