Fitting debut as Bulldogs coach for Curley against Falcons

Thursday, March 19, 2015 - 6:01 PM - by Chris Pike
TODD Curley has never previously been involved in any WAFL club bar West Perth so it's only fitting that his debut as South Fremantle coach this Friday night at Fremantle Oval comes against the Falcons. Curley did play in the AFL with both Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs, but when it comes to the WAFL he played his entire career with West Perth and his first stint as a senior coach was also with the Falcons. Now after some time away from football for the first time in more than two decades following a stint as assistant coach with the Fremantle Dockers, Curley is returning to senior coaching ranks in the WAFL and this time he has taken over at South Fremantle. West Perth focus on finding more avenues to goal in 2015

Thursday, March 19, 2015 - 4:34 PM - by Chris Pike
WEST Perth coach Bill Monaghan realised the Falcons didn’t kick enough goals in 2014 and he is confident that will change in 2015 with a good mix of talls and smalls in the forward-line for his team to try and do just that. With a combination of Nick Rodda, Marcus Adams, Michael Lourey, Max Alexander and Shayne Zanetti providing tall options, Matt Fowler, Matt Johnson, Luke Meadows and Kody Manning as mid-size options and then Corey Chalmers, Chris Franklin, Steve Potente, Marc Crisp and Brayden Antonio as small forwards, that looks to be a forward-line capable of plenty of goals in 2015. West Perth was able to finish the 2014 WAFL season with a strong percentage of 112.43 to have the third strongest in the league behind only grand finalists East Perth and Subiaco, but that was largely because of the Falcons' defence. Arrivals, returnees have Tigers ready to prowl

Thursday, March 19, 2015 - 10:55 AM - by Chris Pike
CLAREMONT roared home late in the 2014 WAFL season to only narrow miss playing finals football which led into the retirement of a host of stars, but the Tigers have welcome some premiership stars back, signed other key players and are looking to fire in 2015. It was a rollercoaster 2014 season for Claremont in Michael Broadbridge's first season as coach with the Tigers starting slowly losing six of their first eight matches by an average of 11 goals to appear more of a contender for the wooden spoon than a finals position. However, things began to turn around with a terrific WA Day win over eventual premiers Subiaco and despite tight losses to West Perth and East Perth after that, the Tigers were building something. You burn and learn

Wednesday, March 18, 2015 - 10:28 AM - by John Worsfold
ONE OF the biggest mistakes you can make as a coach is grouping people together and thinking they will all interpret your message exactly how you want them to. As a team, you want to create a culture of having one mind, one voice and one shared vision, but everyone has different filters and they see things differently. Read More ...

Subiaco send ominous message with second pre-season win

SUBIACO has recorded its second straight WAFL pre-season victory with the reigning premiers thumping Perth by 104 points on Saturday with West Perth, Swan Districts and Claremont also recording victories. Following a first-up 30-point win over South Fremantle last Friday night to open the pre-season fixtures, Subiaco again sent a statement of how seriously they are in attempting to make it back-to-back premierships with a 20.17 (137) to 5.3 (33) win over Perth at Lathlain Park on Saturday. It was a full round of WAFL pre-season fixtures on Saturday with West Perth also beating East Fremantle 14.12 (96) to 4.5 (29) at East Fremantle's ATOM Stadium, Swan Districts defeating Peel Thunder 12.6 (78) to 8.7 (55) at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval and Claremont downing East Perth 11.9 (75) to 7.3 (45) at Leederville's Medibank Stadium. Leg break only blemish in encouraging summer for Swans

Thursday, March 5, 2015 - 12:04 AM - by Chris Pike
SWAN Districts coach Greg Harding is happy with the way the black-and-whites are coming together for the 2015 McDonald's WAFL Premiership season despite injuries to Todd Banfield and Nathan Blakely that could see them sidelined until the second half of the season. Swans became the big surprise packets of the 2014 season overcoming the loss of a host of key players coming into the year to put in a stunning performance to be in contention for the minor premiership for most of it before still finishing third despite a late season slump. The black-and-whites might have lost their home first semi-final to East Fremantle to be eliminated from the finals, but it was a terrific effort to just be there in the first place. Read More ...

Hampson adds premiership experience to Sharks

Wednesday, March 4, 2015 - 6:04 PM - by Chris Pike
GEORGE Hampson became one of the stories of the 2014 WAFL grand final playing on despite a hamstring injury and putting in a starring role in Subiaco's premiership and now he is hoping to help lead East Fremantle to the ultimate success in 2015. The 25-year-old played his 62nd and ultimately last game with Subiaco in last year's grand final where he hurt a hamstring in the first half, but went on to kick three crucial goals as the Lions upset East Perth to claim the premiership. However, Hampson had not played in Round 23, the second semi-final loss to East Perth or preliminary final win over East Fremantle leading into the grand final, and then when the dust had settled on the Lions' premiership, he decided it was time for him to try his hand elsewhere.
