McDonald's WAFL Elimination Finals Preview

Saturday, September 5, 2015 - 1:06 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Perth and Claremont put their WAFL seasons on the line for 2015 when they do battle in the elimination final at Medibank Stadium on Sunday. The WAFL's new final five system introduced in 2015 now sees a first week of the finals that sees minor premiers Subiaco have the bye with West Perth and Peel Thunder playing in a qualifying final, and East Perth taking on Claremont in an elimination final. The Royals and Tigers meet in a cut-throat clash at Medibank Stadium on Sunday with the winner to then face the loser of the West Perth-Peel clash in a first semi-final next Sunday, while the loser's season is over. Meanwhile, the reserves and colts elimination finals will both take place at HBF Arena with the reserves starting the day with West Perth playing East Perth, and then in the colts East Fremantle takes on West Perth. Falcons with own selection dilemmas ahead of clash with Thunder

Friday, September 4, 2015 - 6:48 PM - by Chris Pike
WEST Perth coach Bill Monaghan will make sure his players don't take a Peel Thunder line-up minus the majority of its Fremantle contingent lightly as the Falcons gear up to have all three of their teams playing a home final at HBF Arena on Sunday. Outside the four walls of the club might be seeing Peel largely written off as being genuine chances to win Sunday's qualifying final against West Perth at HBF Arena with a spot in the second semi-final the following Sunday against minor premiers Subiaco up for grabs. However, there is no complacency creeping in at West Perth despite the fact that the Falcons have their own selection dilemmas at the opposite end with close to a full list to choose from, and Shane Nelson, Kody Manning, Tyler Keitel, Joe Morrow and Laine Rasmussen right to return. Yeo answers the call at Tigerland for new stars to emerge

Friday, September 4, 2015 - 5:40 PM - by Chris Pike
WITH the majority of its back-to-back premiership team from only a few years ago having now moved on, Claremont has needed a new breed of Tigers to step up for them to return to the finals in 2015 and Corey Yeo has taken that on board to become an elite midfielder. Yeo couldn’t find a regular position in the league side at East Fremantle with just five games in each of the 2011 and 2012 seasons, but he surfaced at Tigerland in 2014 and has never looked back. The now 24-year-old began his time with Claremont under coach Michael Broadbridge early last season in run-with roles and did some good jobs, but it quickly became apparent that he was too good of a natural ball winner, and with ball in hand to not be more attacking. Royals small defender Fraser a big key to finals hopes

Friday, September 4, 2015 - 5:04 PM - by Chris Pike
HE might just quietly go about his business as one of the best small defenders in the WAFL, but East Perth's Mitch Fraser will again have a big role to play as the Royals take on Claremont in Sunday's elimination final at Medibank Stadium. The 21-year-old small defender has now played 54 games for the Royals and has been a mainstay of the line-up ever since making his debut back in Round 9, 2013. He cemented his place to be part of the team that made the grand final but lost to West Perth that season, then was again an important part of the East Perth side that won the minor premiership in 2014 and again made the grand final before losing to Subiaco. ACC’S Best Put on Grand Final Day Showcase

Thursday, September 3, 2015 - 5:23 PM
If the 2015 Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA Freo Dockers Cup Grand Final was anything to go by, the future of female footy in schools is in safe hands. This year’s  competition consisted of the winning Freo Dockers Cup schools from preliminary rounds played earlier in the school term. This included some of the 3000 students and 150 schools that took part across the state in the competition which culminated with a finals series at City Beach Oval earlier this month. The Grand Final tri-series, now in its third year, has given female students the opportunity to play football and to showcase the skills they have acquired throughout the program. The action took place in ideal conditions, with teams from Seton Catholic College, Mandurah Catholic College and Mater Dei College completing a fierce but fair round robin competition. RediMed Colts Jack Clarke Medal winner

Thursday, September 3, 2015 - 12:58 PM
East Perth’s Stan Wright was last night named 2015 winner of the RediMed Colts Jack Clarke Medal with a total of 42 votes. Wright finished nine votes ahead of West Perth’s Clint Hinchliffe on 33, while Peel Thunder’s Keegan Power came third with 31 votes during the medal count dinner at Domain Stadium. WAFL Talent Manager Raff Guadagnino said Wright was the first 17-year-old winner of the medal in recent history after being a very competitive and dynamic player for East Perth this season. “He has shown the ability to win clearances and contested ball, which has made him a standout midfielder in 2015,” Guadagnino said. Thunder skipper Jones excited for finals debut 218 games in the making

Wednesday, September 2, 2015 - 9:30 AM - by Chris Pike
AFTER 218 games at Perth and Peel, Brendon Jones had every right to think he would never get the chance to play in a WAFL final but that will now all change this Sunday for the Thunder captain against West Perth at HBF Arena. Ever since making his league debut at Perth in 2004, Jones has been one of the best, hardest working and most consistent midfielders in the competition and he's won three fairest and best awards along the way, but what he has been craving desperately is finals success. The closest he came in 101 games in Perth was in his final season of 2009 when the Demons just missed out on fourth position by one game, while at Peel in his previous five years the Thunder have never managed to finished better than second last.
