Tuesday, March 15, 2016 - 1:06 AM - by Chris Pike
NEW co-captain Kyle Anderson and coach Jaymie Graham both have big shoes to fill at East Perth in 2016 but the Royals remain buoyant regarding their hopes of a first premiership since 2002 after being so close the last three years. Craig Wulff will remain East Perth co-captain in 2016 and the Royals' legend will become the club's all-time games record holder when he leads the team out on to Medibank Stadium this Saturday against Claremont to open the season. Wulff will play his 270th game with the Royals seeing him go one ahead of the club record he currently shares with Derek Chadwick. Read More ...

No complacency at Subiaco as Lions hunt another hat-trick

Tuesday, March 15, 2016 - 12:44 AM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO already has one premiership hat-trick this century and there are no signs of complacency at the Lions as they chase another in 2016. The Lions claimed the club's first ever premiership hat-trick with triumphs in 2006, 07 and 08 and now remarkably have a chance to do so again less than a decade following an upset win over East Perth in the 2014 grand final and dominating the competition in 2015 on the way to a 66-point win over West Perth in the decider. While Subiaco has lost three of their grand final stars from last year Matt Boland (returned to Melbourne), Shane Yarran (drafted by Fremantle) and Sam Menegola (drafted by Geelong), there is little sign of any drop off from the Lions coming into 2016. New Thunder skipper Ugle not afraid to aim big

Tuesday, March 15, 2016 - 12:25 AM - by Chris Pike
NEW Peel Thunder captain Gerald Ugle is excited to be appointed skipper for 2016 and enjoyed the chance at playing finals in 2015, but neither he nor anyone involved in the Mandurah-based club are satisfied with just taking part in September. Peel made the WAFL finals for the first time in the club's history since joining the league in 1997 last year. After finishing the home and away season in third position, the Thunder went on to lose the qualifying final to West Perth at HBF Arena and then the first semi-final to East Perth at Bendigo Bank Stadium. Murphy looks for some better luck as Tigers captain

Tuesday, March 15, 2016 - 12:05 AM - by Chris Pike
CLAREMONT captain Jake Murphy is hoping for better luck in his third season as captain of the Tigers as he looks to lead a young Tigers' midfield to help them to another finals campaign. When Murphy took over as Claremont captain in 2014 following the retirement of Andrew Browne, he was coming off the best season of his career where he was just about the best player in the WAFL following a 2013 season averaging 24.7 disposals and kicking 17 goals. As a dual premiership player, the then 24-year-old was a natural selection as the next captain at Claremont but things haven’t gone to plan the last two seasons with a horror injury run. Sharks look for spark from new coach, captain, star recruit

Friday, March 11, 2016 - 11:03 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Fremantle has a new coach, a new captain and a star recruit that the Sharks will be hoping can all combine for a vastly improved 2016 WAFL season after a 2015 that started with such high expectations but couldn’t have been more disappointing. The Sharks made the grand final in 2012 and appeared set to get back there in 2014, and would have done so had it not been for a horrible day in front of goal against Subiaco in the preliminary final. East Fremantle then started 2015 encouragingly winning five of their opening seven games, but things then took a dismal turn for the Sharks as they lost their next 12 games before breaking that drought with a final round victory over Perth. Bulldogs top up talent in quest to return to finals

Thursday, March 10, 2016 - 12:34 AM - by Chris Pike
FOUR talented South Fremantle products back from the AFL, an experienced hard bodied recruit and the son of a legend are among the arrivals at the Bulldogs for 2016 as coach Todd Curley tries to guide them back to the finals in his second season in charge. Curley took over as coach of South Fremantle last season for his first ever involvement in a WAFL club outside of West Perth where he was a premiership player as well as captain and coach. The season showed signs of promise and gave Curley something to build on, but a fourth straight season of not playing finals meant South Fremantle still had plenty of further improvement to do. Falcons focus within for improvement in 2016

Thursday, March 10, 2016 - 12:13 AM - by Chris Pike
BEING content with second place is not something anyone is saying at West Perth coming into the 2016 WAFL season with coach Bill Monaghan hopeful a couple of additions and the overall hunger of the playing group can lead to further improvement. The Falcons had a strong 2015 finishing the home and away season in second position before going on to beat Peel Thunder and East Perth in finals matches at HBF Arena, but losing in the second semi-final and grand final to Subiaco. West Perth has kept the majority of that squad together for 2016 with Marcus Adams the most significant loss from the grand final team, but Max Duffy's arrival after being delisted by Fremantle provides some added attacking flair.
