Letters to home from East Perth ANZACs

Friday, April 22, 2016 - 2:50 PM
From 1940 onwards there was an exodus of players from the ranks of football and East Perth provided its fair share – young men who enlisted for overseas or home service in the Army, Navy or Air Force. The WAFL suspended league football from 1942-44, with an under-age competition taking the place of senior action. The War meant that many young footballers were deprived of the best years of their life and, unfortunately, several paid the supreme sacrifice with their lives. East Perth Football Club Historian Bill Forrest has provided the following extracts from various letters penned by East Perth players serving in the army, which were published in the Daily News of 1916. These letters add a new perspective to ANZAC day as we reflect on this important occassion heading into this weekend's WAFL ANZAC Round. Read More ...

Thursday, April 21, 2016 - 5:40 PM - by Chris Pike
STEVEN Payne is about to reach 100 WAFL games with East Perth and is already a fairest and best winner, but the 25-year-old wingman is far from content with his achievements in his career to date. Payne has made the wing position his own with the Royals since coming into the team midway through 2011 after a relatively long apprenticeship in the reserves. Along the way, he won the 2014 fairest and best award and has been a key player in an East Perth team that made the 2012 first semi-final, grand finals of 2013 and 2014, and then preliminary final of 2015.
