Developing Female Champions

With Female Football growing by 44% in 2015 to now include over 284,000 players Australia wide, and the new AFL women's National competition scheduled to begin in 2017, it is  truly an exciting time to be involved in female football.   WA's elite younger players were recently given the opportunity to work with the West Australian Institute of Sport at the Developing Champions course. They were all excited to meet and hear from Kate Bobridge and Jaime Roberts, an elite level Perth kayaker about her sporting journey aimed at the Olympics. Jaime had the girls enthralled with her practical advice, and impressive work ethic, outlining the requirements and hardships experienced to be an elite athlete and her willingness to share fun stories about her journey. Umpire's special Grand Final experience

Karratha based umpire James Foster-Reed was one of two lucky winners of the AFL Umpire experience in October, which included participating in the AFL Grand Final parade and umpiring in grid games at half time at the MCG. Hockey signs with Bulldogs and key players re-sign

THE South Fremantle Football Club wishes to announce that Frankston VFL captain Shane Hockey has signed a two-year deal to join the Bulldogs from the 2016 WAFL season with several other key players also re-signing. Hockey arrives at South Fremantle with a reputation as a tremendous leader as well as a tough and prolific midfielder after over 100 games in the VFL with Frankston including the 2015 season as skipper. He joins the Bulldogs on a two-year contract and is one of several new player signings that the South Fremantle Football Club will announce in coming weeks heading into Todd Curley's second season in charge as coach looking to return to the finals in 2016 after a four-year absence. South Fremantle names Development Academy coach

THE South Fremantle Football Club has appointed former dual reserves premiership player Mark Foster to the newly created role as head coach of the South Fremantle Development Academy. Foster returns to South Fremantle after a career that saw him play four league matches and in the 2004 and 2009 reserves premiership teams to fill the new position that sees his responsibilities stretch across the Warriors, colts and in coaching the coaches of the entire development group. In conjunction with the WA Football Commission, the South Fremantle Football Club interviewed a number of quality candidates for the role who were put through a rigorous process to find the right person for the newly created position. Phelan caps stellar year for Lions with Outridge Medal

CHRIS Phelan's outstanding and consistent performances for Subiaco have been rewarded with the dual premiership midfielder claiming the Outridge Medal as the Lions' fairest and best for the 2015 WAFL season. Phelan was a constant and consistently strong ball-winner in the midfield all season long for Subiaco and he was acknowledged on Friday night by claiming his first Outridge Medal just weeks after winning a second premiership medal. State Draft Combine results put WAFL players in spotlight

A GROUP of 23 top WAFL players were put through their paces when the AFL State Draft Combine was held at HBF Arena on Saturday, October 17. There were some impressive individual performances, including a record-equalling leap from Claremont's Shane McAdam, 20, who matched Nic Naitanui's 102cm running vertical jump record from 2008. Royals appoint new League coach

East Perth has appointed West Coast development coach Jaymie Graham as its league coach after Brian Dawson decided not to seek reappointment for the 2016 season. Dawson has coached the league team to three consecutive seasons of finals action and will remain involved at East Perth while maintaining his busy schedule as a full-time Professor in Exercise Physiology and Biochemistry at the School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health at the University of Western Australia. Graham, a former Eagles player and St Kilda development coach, joined the West Coast coaching staff in 2014 after spending two years working under Scott Watters at St Kilda. Read More ...

WA Football participation growth leads nation

THE West Australian Football Commission has recorded the largest participation growth in Australia for the core areas of Auskick and Club Football following the official release of AFL census figures today. WA’s Auskick numbers grew by 22.7% to almost 40,000 participants, while Club Football increased by 4% to 62,536. The next closest was South Australia with 3% growth in both of these fundamental segments. Total football participation for 2015 in WA was 224,842, which equates to 9% overall growth in direct comparison to 2014 AFL census data, taking into account the reclassification of some segments this year. Ballard wins Tuckey Medal as Peel's best after Dockers delisting

JACOB Ballard has capped a rollercoaster run of events that included his AFL debut and delisting by Fremantle by winning Peel Thunder's Tuckey Medal as the fairest and best player for the 2015 WAFL season. Brock O'Brien wins Lynn Medal as Sharks' best for 2015

BROCK O'Brien cemented himself as one of the most valuable players in the WAFL in 2015 whether in attack or running off half-back, and that has been acknowledged with the left-footer winning the Lynn Medal as East Fremantle's fairest and best winner. The 2015 season might not have turned out as the Sharks hoped coming off last year's preliminary final appearance with a run of 12 straight matches up until the final round, including Brad Dodd replacing Steve Malaxos as coach, meaning it wasn’t the campaign they were hoping for. However, the one great shining light was the performance of Brock O'Brien first as a an attacking half-back in the first half of the season where his ability to find plenty of the ball, and to kick with great depth and precision setting up East Fremantle from the back half. WAFL players impress at National Combine

WAFL players impressed at the NAB AFL National Draft Combine in Melbourne over the weekend, including Josh Schoenfeld from Peel Thunder who set a new combine record for the 3km time trial and also recorded the top beep test result for 2015. Schoenfeld finished the 3km time trial in 9min. 15sec to beat the record of 9.18 set last year by Sydney Swans draftee Jack Hiscox. Schoenfeld also ran 16.2 in the beep test, the second-best ever recorded behind Hawthorn’s Billy Hartung (16.6 in 2013). East Fremantle Football Club's Jordan Snadden also impressed with top place for 2015 in the Relative Vertical Jump test with a leap of 75cm, 4cm higher than the next best.
