Wheeler reaches century for Lions in grand final rematch

Thursday, March 31, 2016 - 10:21 PM - by Chris Pike
CLANCY Wheeler could very well have been Subiaco's most important player in the premierships of the last two years and the versatile big man reaches his 100th game for the Lions this Saturday against West Perth at HBF Arena. He might be a little undersized and he might be best suited to a key position at either end of the ground, but Wheeler has performed so strongly when called upon in the ruck over his career that he has been a crucial member of their success. Combine that with his ability to play some tremendous football both at centre half-forward and centre half-back, and he has put together an outstanding 99 games with the club that started with his debut in 2011. WEST Perth and Peel Thunder both scored their first victories of 2016, and South Fremantle remained unbeaten in tough and wet conditions for Saturday's Round 2 WAFL matches. Following Subiaco's 13.15 (93) to 9.8 (62) victory on Good Friday at Medibank Stadium over East Perth, the wet weather rolled in on Saturday to make for a difficult day of football early in the new season. That saw Swan Districts record its lowest ever score in the club's 82-year history with South Fremantle handing them a 9.14 (68) to 2.6 (18) defeat at Steel Blue Oval. West Perth came from behind and had to withstand 45 possessions from Clint Jones to beat Perth 12.12 (84) to 6.7 (43) at HBF Arena while Peel Thunder won a nail-biter 11.7 (73) to 9.16 (70) over East Fremantle at Bendigo Bank Stadium. Friday, March 25, 2016 - 4:50 PM - by Chris Pike
PERTH has made some big changes over summer to try and get back in the WAFL finals mix and now coach Earl Spalding is just hoping for an encouraging start against West Perth on Saturday following the Round 1 bye. It hasn’t been a couple of years to remember for Perth with two straight wooden spoons and with the Demons having only won two of their last 34 matches, but there is plenty of reasons for optimism that 2016 will be a season of marked improvement at Lathlain Park. Spalding is entering his second season as coach at Perth and is happy with the mix he now has with the playing group and that most importantly he has a group that he is confident is now fully committed to the cause.
