A day for the Proudloves

The Claremont Football Community will come together this Sunday to raise vital funds for the Proudies Foundation, which was set up to support former Tigers player Warrick Proudlove. In July 2011 19-year-old Warrick was seriously injured in a freak car accident when the car he was travelling in as a passenger collided with a horse.   Warrick sustained serious head injuries and in turn suffered significant brain damage and requires 24-hour care, rehabilitation and special equipment, all of which comes at a cost. THREE matches in Round 11 of the 2016 McDonald's WAFL Premiership Season take place on Saturday afternoon featuring four of the top five teams while Sunday features two sides desperate to return to the winner's list. With the top of the table South Fremantle having the bye, the third placed East Fremantle looks to continue its winning form up against the fourth placed Peel Thunder at ATOM Stadium. East Perth and Subiaco are also looking to rebound from disappointing losses when the Medibank Stadium co-tenants lock horns in a battle of sixth against second with the third clash on Saturday featuring Perth hosting the on-fire West Perth at Lathlain Park. Aboriginal football players and Indigenous culture will be celebrated and recognised at the West Coast Eagles v Gold Coast Suns clash at Domain Stadium this weekend as part of the AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round. Named in honour of elite VFL footballer and Indigenous leader Sir Doug Nicholls, the round will feature a number of events to showcase local Indigenous football talent. Ballajura juniors embracing Indigenous Round

Ballajura Junior Football Club will celebrate AFL Indigenous Round with a unique jumper designed for this weekend’s Year 7 game inspired by the players and their parents. Parent Narelle Ryder initiated the concept and upon getting approval from the East Perth District and Ballajura Junior Football Club, designed a jumper that was presented to the parents of the other players, who all agreed to purchase a set of the jumpers. North West Academy squad departing for Darwin

WESTERN Australia’s North West Academy squad will participate in the Northern Australia Cup in Darwin from May 26 to 29. The squad of 25, attached, will participate in two matches against the Northern Territory State 16s Academy at TIO Stadium. The first game will be played on Friday, May 26 at 8.30pm and the second on Saturday, May 27 at 6pm. MICHAEL Barlow and Ashton Hams revelled in the stormy conditions in WAFL Round 10 action on Saturday with 40-plus disposals in wins for Peel Thunder and South Fremantle but there were plenty of other standout performers as well. All four matches took place on Saturday starting at Bendigo Bank Stadium with Barlow leading Peel Thunder to the 5.9 (39) to 3.7 (25) win over East Perth. South Fremantle and Swan Districts played in the best of the conditions of the day and the scoreboard at Steel Blue Oval reflected that with the Bulldogs beating Swans 19.12 (126) to 12.7 (79). Waterman named State 18s skipper

Claremont player Jake Waterman was announced as WA State 18s captain during an official State Academy jumper presentation at Domain Stadium on Tuesday night, May 24. Waterman, 18, was voted captain by his teammates and coaches after demonstrating his leadership during last year's AFL National 18s Championships as a first year player. Claremont teammate Sam Petrevski-Seton, West Perth’s Josh Rotham, East Perth’s Sam Powell-Pepper and Swan Districts player Griffin Logue were also announced as part of the State 18s leadership group. Vale Merv Cowan

WAFL Life Member, former East Fremantle Football Club President and former WAFC Commissioner Merv Cowan passed away over the weekend aged 91.  Merv Cowan was a great servant to WA Football, particularly at East Fremantle Football Club where played 169 games between 1948-1957. A Premiership player in 1957, Cowan also served as EFFC secretary from 1960–1964 and as President from 1970-1982. A true legend of the club, Merv Cowan attended East Fremantle games every week and has the Merv Cowan Stand named in his honour at ATOM Stadium. He was also a Member of the WAFL Board of Management from 1960 to 1982 and a WAFC Commissioner from 1991 to 1996. Read More ...
