State U23 women to clash with Queensland

WESTERN Australia’s State U23 Women’s team departs this week for games against Queensland’s U23s on Friday night and Sunday morning. The first game will be held at Yeronga Oval, South Brisbane at 6.30pm on Friday, June 17 and the second at 11am at Metricon Stadium on Sunday, June 19. The team will be led by State Women’s Academy coach Martine Pearman, captain Courtney Ugle and a leadership group including Demi Okely, Tayla Bresland, Eliza Gelmi and Emily Bonser. An official jumper presentation for team members was held at Swan Districts Football Club on Tuesday, June 14 and attended by WAFC Commissioners Cheryl Edwardes and Grant Dorrington, as well as AFL club representatives Wade Spilcker from Fremantle and Deane Pieters from West Coast. Rioli, Sorrell receive AFL Hall of Fame honour

WA football legends Maurice Rioli and Ray Sorrell have been recognised with induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. The pair were inducted last night during a gala event in Melbourne. 1959 Brownlow medallist Verdun Howell (St Kilda), SANFL star Paul Bagshaw (Sturt) Adelaide defender Ben Hart and Brisbane Lions midfielder Nigel Lappin were also inducted. WA and AFL Hall of Fame Legend Barry Cable was added to the Australian Football Hall of Fame selection panel after playing an important role advocating for greater national recognition of the history of WA Football prior to the introduction of the AFL competition. Football clubs kicking goals for sarcoma awareness

WAFC congratulates Fremantle Football Club on women's licence

The West Australian Football Commission is delighted by today’s announcement that Fremantle Football Club has received a licence to field a team in the 2017 AFL National Women’s League. WAFC Chief Executive Gavin Taylor said this was highly deserved recognition for the club’s commitment to female football in Western Australia and the quality of their submission to the AFL. “Our State has a proud history of female football, starting with the earliest known competitive women’s game in Australia being played in Perth in 1915,” he said. “One hundred years later, WA has almost 50,000 Female Participants (21.83% of WA Participation) and there is now a complete pathway for female footballers from all-girls Auskick centres right through to the elite National Women’s League. Emerging WAFL stars take another step towards AFL future

DARCY Cameron, Tim Kelly, Luke Meadows and Jye Bolton all further enhanced their reputations in Saturday's WAFL state game victory over Tasmania and WA coach Darren Harris wouldn’t be surprised to see all four in the AFL in 2017. The WAFL state team defeated South Australia by 45 points last year and from that side Ryan Davis and Shane Yarran ended up being drafted into the AFL by the Gold Coast Suns and Fremantle Dockers respectively. Now from the WA side that scored a record 134-point victory over Tasmania there will be several players who will be in the mix to be drafted later in the year including Claremont's Cameron, South Fremantle's Kelly, West Perth's Meadows and Simpson Medallist Bolton. WESTERN Australia's state team in Saturday's record win over Tasmania had a good blend of youth and experience, and those who were multiple time WAFL representatives and debutants with coach Darren Harris delighted with how they all performed. WA beat Tasmania by a record 134 points with two players taking part in their fifth game representing the WAFL, two more playing for a fourth time, another six playing for a third time, six others making their second appearance then seven players making their state debut. South Fremantle's Ryan Cook and West Perth's Andrew Strijk were the two to make their fifth appearance with East Fremantle's Andrew Stephen and East Perth's Paul Johnson playing for a fourth time. Simpson Medallist Bolton turns focus back to winning at Claremont

JYE Bolton was honoured to win the Simpson Medal after his scintillating display in Saturday's 134-point state game win over Tasmania but his focus is on trying to achieve success at Claremont still this year before he even thinks about what 2017 might hold. Bolton is in his first season at Claremont in the WAFL after crossing from VFL club Werribee and his form with the Tigers demanded selection in the WA state side to play Tasmania at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday. The 24-year-old delivered a remarkable performance in WA's record win finishing with 46 possessions, 12 marks, seven clearances and two goals to make him the standout choice to win the Simpson Medal as best on ground. WESTERN Australia coach Darren Harris was proud of how seriously the players took their responsibility to represent the WAFL and WA in Saturday's record state match win over Tasmania ahead of an expected clash in Melbourne with Victoria next year. WA won a fourth straight state match beating Tasmania by a record 134 points at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday on the back of victories against the VFL, NEAFL and SANFL the past three years. WESTERN Australia wasn’t able to continue its winning start to the 2016 NAB AFL 18s Championships going down to South Australia on Sunday at AAMI Stadium, but it wasn’t without some impressive performances and a strong finish. WA was coming off a tremendous start to its campaign for 2016 last Sunday with a 61-point win over Victoria Country at Domain Stadium before heading to Adelaide's AAMI Stadium this Sunday to take on South Australia. WAFL delivers record-setting state game win over Tasmania

WESTERN Australia has romped to a record-setting 134-point state game victory over Tasmania at Steel Blue Oval giving the WAFL team a fourth straight victory in interstate battles. The game was the 23rd meeting between the two states with WA having now won 18 of those but Saturday's 134-point win was the biggest in history eclipsing the 122-point triumph at North Hobart in 1964. The WAFL representative side takes on the best of the Tasmanian State League at the Bassendean venue on Saturday looking for a fourth successive victory following wins over the VFL, NEAFL and SANFL the past three years. The WA team will again be coached by Darren Harris and captained by East Perth ruckman Paul Johnson who were both in the same roles in last year's 45-point win over South Australia. State debutant Kelly primed to represent WA

VERY few players have the combined abilities to win the hard contested ball, lay crunching tackles, be a clearance machine and then break the lines, but that all sums up Tim Kelly with the young South Fremantle star to make his state debut for the WAFL on Saturday. Kelly is one of five players from the league-leading South Fremantle picked in the final 23 for Western Australia to play in the 2016 state match against Tasmania at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday. Of the five Bulldogs players selected, it is Kelly the only one set to make his state debut with captain Ryan Cook to play for WA for a fifth time, Ashton Hams a third and then it will be the second time for both Marlion Pickett and Ben Saunders.
