The West Australian Football League has committed to scheduling a future Saturday night Grand Final following an extensive consultation process with WAFL clubs and stakeholders. WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor said that after assessing feedback from clubs, fans and other stakeholders, the strong support for a Saturday night Grand Final meant it would be high on the agenda for 2017. “The WAFC, in partnership with the WAFL, is committed to the Saturday night Grand Final concept and exploring all options to ensure this comes to fruition in the future,” Mr Taylor said. “We want to showcase the WAFL Grand Final by maximising both attendance at the game and the television audience and strongly believe a Saturday night Grand Final will deliver this opportunity. Two Intensive English Centre (IEC) schools battled it out in the inaugural AFL IEC Senior Division Cup on Thursday August 18, as part of the West Australian Football Commission’s (WAFC) Multicultural School Football program. ALL eyes will be locked onto ATOM Stadium on Saturday in the final round of the 2016 McDonald's WAFL Premiership Season as East Fremantle and East Perth do battle with a finals place at stake. With minor premier Subiaco having the bye and the second placed South Fremantle, third placed West Perth and fourth placed Peel Thunder all playing teams out of finals contention, it is the Sharks and Royals who take centre stage on Saturday. East Fremantle takes on East Perth at ATOM Stadium and quite simply the winner will make the finals in 2016 and the loser won't. SOUTH Fremantle defender Blayne Wilson reaches the 100-game mark in the WAFL this Saturday but is more looking forward to another finals campaign and hopes to go one step better than the losing grand finals of 2013 and 2014. Wilson is now in his second season with South Fremantle following four years with the West Coast Eagles where he was able to continue his WAFL career at Peel Thunder early on, and then moved to East Perth the last two seasons. Wilson has played 36 games in the WAFL with the Thunder, 29 with the Royals and so far 34 with the Bulldogs and he will reach 100 in total this Saturday when South Fremantle takes on Perth at Lathlain Park in the final round of the home and away season. Peel Thunder Colts secured a strong 16.5 (101) to 11.5 (71) win over Subiaco at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Saturday, August 20. South Fremantle Colts thumped East Perth 13.6 (84) to 3.9 (27) at Medibank Stadium and in other games, East Fremantle Colts defeated Claremont 7.7 (49) to 5.4 (34) while Swan Districts Colts scraped home with a 6.3 (39) to 2.15 (27) victory over Perth Colts. GERALDTON Senior College Year 10 student Declan Clayton has made it into the AFL Schools Fantasy football grand final after causing an upset against New South Wales’ student Thomas Mewett. Thomas was ranked number six across the more than 150,000 Australian competitors (not just school players) heading into the match with Declan team Clayto’s Champions ranked 174. Declan was able to post a score of 2474 compared to Thomas’ 2340 to advance to the grand final match and edge closer to claiming the National Champion prize which includes a $500 AFL merchandise voucher, iPad and football signed by Trent Cotchin. Declan will face South Australian competitor Max Drogemuller from Prince Alfred College in the grand final after Max defeated the Victorian competitor. The recent Eagles Schoolboys Cup Grand Final presented an exciting opportunity for both competing schools. For Comet Bay College, it was the chance to create history and win their third consecutive grand final. For Mazenod College, the opportunity to avenge last year’s grand final defeat at the hands of Comet Bay and claim their first title since 2001. In the 33rd year of the competition, over 150 teams and 4,000 lower school students from across Western Australia competed in a quality competition that represents a significant partnership between West Australian Football Commission and the West Coast Eagles. In what was a very tight contest for three quarters, a 5 goal to nothing last quarter by Comet Bay saw them win their third consecutive grand final proving too strong for Mazenod College, running out victors by 39 points. The West Australian Football League’s inaugural Fathering Project Round will be held this Saturday, August 27 with free family entry at all games when a Free Entry Flyer is presented. The Round is being held in collaboration with the Fathering Project, which is a non-for-profit charity supporting fathers and father figures who want to make a real difference in, and have a positive impact on the lives of children. The Fathering Project’s mission is to inspire and encourage fathers and father figures “to be the best dads they can be” by being pro-active in the lives of their children. It does this primarily by helping dads to set up “Champion” Dads’ Groups in schools, supported by research into fathering and a website full of activities and tips. Read More ...

The West Australian Football Commission thanks State 18s coach Andrew Lockyer for his outstanding contribution to the State Talent Academy program and the development of WA’s most talented young players. Lockyer has advised the WAFC that he will not continue as State 18s coach next year and will pursue other avenues to make a contribution to the football community. WAFC Executive Manager Football Operations Jon Haines said Lockyer had provided great leadership and commitment to WA’s talent development pathway during two stints as State 18s coach. “Andrew has made a terrific contribution, not only to the State 18s group but to the broader Talent Academy, its players, support staff and volunteers,” Haines said. Coastal Titans teammates Kiara Bowers and Emma King were announced joint winners of the 2016 WA Women’s Football League Dhara Kerr Fairest and Best Award during a presentation dinner on Monday, August 22. It was the fifth WAWFL Fairest and Best award for Kiara Bowers and Emma King's first, with both players polling 21 votes each. The four Round 22 matches saw Subiaco overrun Peel Thunder to win 13.15 (93) to 12.4 (76) on the back of kicking six goals to nil in the final quarter at Bendigo Bank Stadium. East Perth then came home hard against South Fremantle at Medibank Stadium, but the Bulldogs held on to win 13.8 (86) to 12.10 (82).
