THE 2016 AHG WAFL Finals Series begins on Saturday afternoon with a big qualifying final day at Fremantle Community Bank Oval as South Fremantle takes on West Perth. The league qualifying final on Saturday sees South Fremantle take on West Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with minor premier Subiaco awaiting the winner. Finals experienced Falcons welcome back four stars

WEST Perth welcomes back Shane Nelson, Dean Munns, Tyler Keitel and Steve Potente for Saturday's WAFL qualifying final against South Fremantle and coach Bill Monaghan hopes the Falcons finals experience can be used as a positive. The Falcons finished the home and away season winning 12 of their last 15 games following a 1-4 start to end up in third position to book a qualifying final berth against the Bulldogs this Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval. It looms as a fascinating contest with West Perth coming off winning the 2013 premiership and playing in the 2015 grand final while South Fremantle hasn’t made a finals appearance since 2011. THE 2016 McDonald's WAFL Premiership Season is now over with the AHG Finals Series beginning this weekend and the WAFL has announced its Team of the Year for 2016. After each and every week of the season, a WAFL Team of the Week has been selected and named at www.wafl.com.au. Now based on the selection of those sides over the 23 rounds, a Team of the Year has been selected and named. Ben Saunders wins third Bernie Naylor Medal in five years

SOUTH Fremantle full-forward Ben Saunders kicked four goals in the final round of the 2016 WAFL Premiership Season to secure his third Bernie Naylor Medal of the past five years since he joined the Bulldogs. Saunders came into South Fremantle's clash with Perth needing three more goals to join Subiaco's Hamish Shepheard on 51, or four to overtake the Lions spearhead who was sitting out with his club having the bye. Saunders ended up kicking two goals in the first quarter and a third in the second to draw level with Shepheard on 51 as South Fremantle delivered an 11- goal to nil first half. Read More ...


Humble wins Jack Clarke Medal

PEEL Thunder's Michael Humble last night became the first player from his club to win the WAFL Redimed Colts Jack Clarke Medal in a thrilling vote count at Domain Stadium. The result came down to the final round when Humble was tied on 40 votes with Claremont's Jacob Sideris and South Fremantle's Shai Bolton. Humble polled three votes in Peel Thunder's Round 23 game against Claremont with 30 possessions and a goal, while Sideris was playing Reserves and Bolton didn't poll in his side's loss to Perth. Weekend of female footy success

The WA Women’s Football Season for 2016 has officially closed, culminating in three grand finals that took place at Medibank Stadium on Sunday, August 28. The WAFC Youth Girls Rogers Cup Grand Final between Peel Thunderbirds and Swan Districts opened the day. Finishing their season undefeated, the Peel Thunderbirds put on a strong display of football and claimed the title of Youth Girl Premiers for 2016. AFL flavour for WAFL Elimination Final

Peel Thunder and East Perth will have a large pool of AFL-listed players available for selection when the two clubs clash in a sudden death final at Bendigo Bank Stadium this Sunday. The WAFL Elimination Final on September 4 will see Peel aiming to win the club's first ever final and coach Cam Shepherd said they were looking forward to the opportunity. "We're really proud to be playing in finals and hopefully growing footy in the Peel District and I know John Ditchburn and the board will be really keen for us to have a big crowd there on Sunday," he said. Round 23 McDonald's WAFL Wrap Up

EAST Perth proved too good for East Fremantle in the last round of the 2016 McDonald's WAFL Premiership Season to secure a finals berth while Claremont, Perth and Swan Districts were unable to upset finals bound teams. All the focus was on ATOM Stadium on Saturday as East Fremantle took on East Perth with fifth position and a finals appearance on the line, and it was the Royals who prevailed 13.9 (87) to 6.3 (39). The other three games featured teams locked into finals positions against the bottom three on the ladder. That saw South Fremantle beat Perth 14.14 (98) to 7.4 (46) at Lathlain Park, Peel Thunder defeat Claremont 10.10 (70) to 6.9 (45) at the Claremont Showground and West Perth down Swan Districts 13.18 (96) to 11.10 (76) at HBF Arena. 2016 AHG WAFL Finals Series

The 2016 AHG WAFL Finals Series kicks off this Saturday when South Fremantle host West Perth at Fremantle Oval in the Qualifying Final for a chance to meet Subiaco in the 2nd Semi-Final the following weekend. The Elimination Final between Peel Thunder and East Perth will also be played this weekend, with bouncedown at 3.10pm on Sunday, September 4. WHILE South Fremantle, West Perth and Peel Thunder did as expected by winning ahead of their WAFL finals appearances, all eyes were on ATOM Stadium on Saturday with fifth spot up for grabs and it was East Perth in control all afternoon over East Fremantle to prevail. With Subiaco, South Fremantle, West Perth and Peel Thunder locked in for the top four positions coming into the last round of the 2016 McDonald's WAFL Premiership Season, it was left to the Sharks and Royals to battle over the remaining spot. East Fremantle had the home ground advantage but that proved to be all as East Perth controlled the game from the outset to end up winning 13.9 (87) to 6.3 (39) to finish in fifth position. Saturday's other Round 23 matches saw Peel Thunder beat Claremont 10.10 (70) to 6.9 (45) at the Claremont Showground, South Fremantle defeat Perth 14.14 (98) to 7.4 (46) at Lathlain Park and West Perth overrun Swan Districts to win 13.18 (96) to 11.10 (76) at HBF Arena. WAFL commits to Saturday night Grand Final concept

The West Australian Football League has committed to scheduling a future Saturday night Grand Final following an extensive consultation process with WAFL clubs and stakeholders. WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor said that after assessing feedback from clubs, fans and other stakeholders, the strong support for a Saturday night Grand Final meant it would be high on the agenda for 2017. “The WAFC, in partnership with the WAFL, is committed to the Saturday night Grand Final concept and exploring all options to ensure this comes to fruition in the future,” Mr Taylor said. “We want to showcase the WAFL Grand Final by maximising both attendance at the game and the television audience and strongly believe a Saturday night Grand Final will deliver this opportunity.
