More than 70 AFL School Ambassadors from across Western Australia commenced the new school term with a Professional Learning Day at the West Australian Cricket Association (WACA) on Monday, April 24.

Teachers got the opportunity to hear from fellow AFL School Ambassadors and WA Football Commission (WAFC) staff before they took part in a practical workshop to develop their football teaching skills.

WAFC Community Engagement Coordinator and East Fremantle FC player Liam Anthony presented on the sporting opportunities available for students from diverse cultural backgrounds and Female Football Coordinator Allan Dickie outlined the complete football pathway now available for all aspiring female footballers.

The teachers also heard from fellow Ambassadors Nuria Ushoroff (Australian Islamic College) and Sean Brennan (Thornlie Senior High School) who shared how they promote football at their schools and engage their students in football activities.

An umpiring crash course was presented by West Australian Football League (WAFL) Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair before teachers got the chance to sample WAFC school programs and competitions including Freo Fast Skills and Eagles Faction Footy.

WAFC School Programs Manager David Lindsay, who coordintated the event, was extremely pleased with the outcomes and the feedback he'd received.

“It was fantastic to have teachers from as far away as Tom Price come along and take part in the teaching and coaching workshop,” Lindsay said.

“New ideas and skills were developed amongst the group and it seemed everyone got something out of the day that they can apply to their teaching methods at their schools.”

There are currently 1,200 AFL School Ambassadors in WA schools.
