2016 WAFL Sandover Medal

THE West Australian Football League will honour the 2016 McDonald’s WAFL Premiership Season’s fairest and best player when the Sandover Medal is presented in the Bellevue Ballroom at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC) on Monday night, September 19. The Sandover Medal, which has been awarded each season since 1921, will be presented by Ian Sandover, great grandson of the original donor of the medal, Mr Alfred Sandover. The vote count will take place from 7pm to approximately 10pm. The count will broadcast live by Sport FM 91.3fm and updates posted on WAFL social media accounts. O'Brien pinching himself to be part of Peel success on return 'home'

RORY O'Brien could only dream of finals during his first 92 games with Peel Thunder and hope for them upon his return in 2016, but ahead of Sunday's preliminary final he is pinching himself over how his return to his original club has panned out. O'Brien grew up in Mandurah wanting to play with Peel Thunder and got his wish making a league debut in 2005 going on to play 92 games either side of a stint in the SANFL with North Adelaide in 2008. He won two fairest and best awards with the Thunder but there was nothing resembling team success on the horizon when he decided to leave for East Fremantle in 2011. Read More ...


Premiership hat-trick the goal before Twomey decides future

SUBIACO veteran Wayde Twomey is now a 150-game WAFL player and isn’t sure what 2017 holds for him just yet aside from getting married, but what is on his mind is becoming part of history part of a hat-trick of premierships with the Lions. Twomey was again a key contributor in Subiaco's second semi-final win over South Fremantle at Medibank Stadium on Sunday that puts the Lions into a third straight grand final, and a 10th in the past 14 WAFL seasons. That is a remarkable record and the Lions already have one premiership hat-trick to their credit this century between 2006 and 2008. Queens Park claims inaugural MFL Division 1 Premiership

The Queens Park Bulldogs won their inaugural Division 1 Premiership flag by defeating reining premiers Warwick/Greenwood in front of almost 1000 people at the Metropolitan Football League Grand Final last weekend. Having formed in 2013 and tasting immediate premiership glory in their first season together in the Division 2 competition, the Bulldogs took all before them as they stormed their way to victory. West Australian Football Commission CEO Gavin Taylor has set an agenda for the review of football in Western Australia, announcing that the WAFC will be undertaking a major structural review of WA football and developing a new strategic vision for the football industry. “In the lifecycle of any sport it is very important to continually review and assess performance and structures to ensure they are relevant for today and also the generations of the future. SUBIACO is one win away from a remarkable second WAFL premiership hat-trick in a decade after beating South Fremantle by 40 points in Sunday's second semi-final at Medibank Stadium. Coming off winning the last two WAFL premierships on the back of three straight flags in 2006, 2007 and 2008, Subiaco is into the 2016 WAFL Grand Final with a victory at Domain Stadium on Sunday September 25 to deliver another hat-trick. Subiaco was coming off a bye in Round 23 and then a break in the opening week of the finals, but the Lions delivered a stunning patch of eight unanswered goals either side of three quarter-time to set up the eventual 14.12 (96) to 9.2 (56) victory. PEEL Thunder is just one win away from its first ever WAFL Grand Final after beating West Perth by 60 points in Sunday's first semi-final at HBF Arena. Having made history last Sunday by winning the club's first ever final downing East Perth by 49 points at Bendigo Bank Stadium, Peel backed it up at HBF Arena on Sunday defeating last year's grand finalists West Perth 15.15 (105) to 7.3 (45). While Peel had 17 Fremantle-listed players for a second straight week, it was their ability to perform as a team combined with the five WAFL-listed players that helped them dominate the contest. Subiaco through to third consecutive WAFL Grand Final

Subiaco Football Club has progressed to its third consecutive Grand Final following a 40-point win over South Fremantle at Medibank Stadium. Leigh Kitchin lead the way for the Lions with 35 disposals, while livewire forward Liam Ryan booted four goals. WAFL Second Semi Finals Preview

A SPOT in the 2016 WAFL Grand Final goes on the line on Sunday when Subiaco enters the AHG Finals Series taking on South Fremantle in the second semi-final at Medibank Stadium. Subiaco has won the last two WAFL premierships and had the break in the first week of the finals after a second straight minor premiership. The Lions now host a South Fremantle team who finished second and won last week's qualifying final in this Sunday's second semi-final at Medibank Stadium. The winner advances to the 2016 WAFL Grand Final at Domain Stadium while the loser will host a preliminary final next Sunday against the winner of the first semi-final between West Perth and Peel Thunder at HBF Arena. West Perth is coming off a 52-point loss to South Fremantle while Peel Thunder beat East Perth by 49 points last weekend setting up their first semi-final battle at HBF Arena on Sunday. The winner will advance to the preliminary final against the loser of the second semi-final between Subiaco and South Fremantle at Medibank Stadium. The loser's season will be over.
