Friday, March 17, 2017 - 9:32 AM - by Chris Pike
WEST Perth has the Round 1 bye ahead of a derby next Sunday and coach Bill Monaghan is looking forward to seeing his strong key position player stocks in action along with how some emerging players step up in 2017. The Falcons made the finals again in 2016 on the back of playing in two of the previous three WAFL grand finals, and winning the premiership in 2013. Monaghan is again hoping the Falcons are around the mark in 2017 but there are a lot of unknown quantities heading into 2017. Following last year, West Perth has lost some significant experience and quality with the retirement of Luke Tedesco, and departures of Laine Rasmussen, Drew Rohde, Rohan Kerr, Joel Leeson and Max Duffy. LUKE Webster makes his return to East Perth as a senior coach in 2017 and the club great and premiership player is making no secret that his No. 1 goal is to win above and beyond anything else. Webster retired folloing the 2010 WAFL season from East Perth bringing an end to a playing career that had plenty of challenges with four knee reconstructions, but some tremendous highs particularly with the Royals. He played in the 2001 premiership with East Perth and following his 33-game AFL career with Fremantle ended that was dogged by the knee injuries, returned to the Royals as a co-captain. Thursday, March 16, 2017 - 11:30 AM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO has made the past three WAFL grand finals and despite losing plenty of premiership experience, coach Jarrad Schofield is looking forward to seeing how his retooled Lions shape up in 2017. Subiaco went ever so close to securing a premiership hat-trick last year. Coming off the triumphs of 2015 and 2016, the Lions again finished the home and away season as minor premiers and then advanced straight to the grand final after beating South Fremantle in the second semi-final. Peel Thunder ended up prevailing denying Subiaco a third straight flag and despite losing experience and talent since, the Lions have also brought in plenty and have some good youngsters coming through giving Schofield reason for optimism.
