Thunder captain Ugle wants to keep making history

Saturday, September 17, 2016 - 9:32 AM - by Chris Pike
GERALD Ugle has already made history in his first season as captain at Peel Thunder ahead of Sunday's preliminary final and as much as the Fremantle-listed players are receiving attention, he couldn’t be more proud of their locals. Ugle made the decision to join Peel in 2015 after one season back in the WAFL with his original club Perth after time in the AFL with the GWS Giants. Almost two full years later it's a move that could hardly have worked out better. After an outstanding individual season in 2015 that saw Peel make finals for the first time ever before losing the qualifying final to West Perth and first semi-final to East Perth, Ugle was named captain for 2016 despite only turning 23 during the year. Friday, September 16, 2016 - 5:28 PM - by Chris Pike
JOSH Pullman is a rare breed of Bulldog in 2016 who has already experienced a WAFL Grand Final and the forward turned defender is hoping to get another crack at that elusive premiership by helping South Fremantle to a win in Sunday's preliminary final against Peel Thunder. Pullman is just one of three South Fremantle players who will play in Sunday's preliminary final against Peel Thunder at Fremantle Community Bank Oval who has previously experienced a WAFL Grand Final before. That was back in 2008 when Pullman graduated from being a colts premiership captain at Swan Districts to cementing a spot at centre half-forward in the league side at Swans who made it all the way to the Grand Final before losing to Subiaco. O'Brien pinching himself to be part of Peel success on return 'home'

Thursday, September 15, 2016 - 11:29 PM - by Chris Pike
RORY O'Brien could only dream of finals during his first 92 games with Peel Thunder and hope for them upon his return in 2016, but ahead of Sunday's preliminary final he is pinching himself over how his return to his original club has panned out. O'Brien grew up in Mandurah wanting to play with Peel Thunder and got his wish making a league debut in 2005 going on to play 92 games either side of a stint in the SANFL with North Adelaide in 2008. He won two fairest and best awards with the Thunder but there was nothing resembling team success on the horizon when he decided to leave for East Fremantle in 2011. Read More ...

Premiership hat-trick the goal before Twomey decides future

Thursday, September 15, 2016 - 5:13 PM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO veteran Wayde Twomey is now a 150-game WAFL player and isn’t sure what 2017 holds for him just yet aside from getting married, but what is on his mind is becoming part of history part of a hat-trick of premierships with the Lions. Twomey was again a key contributor in Subiaco's second semi-final win over South Fremantle at Medibank Stadium on Sunday that puts the Lions into a third straight grand final, and a 10th in the past 14 WAFL seasons. That is a remarkable record and the Lions already have one premiership hat-trick to their credit this century between 2006 and 2008. They are one win away from another if they can win next Sunday's Grand Final against either South Fremantle or Peel Thunder at Domain Stadium. Read More ...

WAFL Second Semi-Final Results

Sunday, September 11, 2016 - 11:53 PM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO is one win away from a remarkable second WAFL premiership hat-trick in a decade after beating South Fremantle by 40 points in Sunday's second semi-final at Medibank Stadium. Coming off winning the last two WAFL premierships on the back of three straight flags in 2006, 2007 and 2008, Subiaco is into the 2016 WAFL Grand Final with a victory at Domain Stadium on Sunday September 25 to deliver another hat-trick. Subiaco was coming off a bye in Round 23 and then a break in the opening week of the finals, but the Lions delivered a stunning patch of eight unanswered goals either side of three quarter-time to set up the eventual 14.12 (96) to 9.2 (56) victory.
