To celebrate NAIDOC week the WA Football Commission hosted a special morning tea event featuring a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Richard Walley.
Claremont Football Club legend Michael Mitchell also attended the event and WAFC Community Engagement Coordinator Adam Cockie talked about the special meaning behind the NAIDOC WAFL footballs designed by Michael Mitchell's daughter Samantha.
The big circles in the design represent the football grounds and the games, while the leaves represent the country and the bush.
The lines represent all of the people coming and going from the games. It is about grassroots all the way to the big stage.
The ball also features the family names of some of the great Aboriginal footballers who have played in the WAFL.
A special collection of unique NAIDOC footballs were also displayed at the event.
The amazing artwork on these footballs were created by Acacia Prison inmates. The artwork on the football pictured below represents all nine WAFL clubs.
WAFL Manager Steve Hargrave also detailed what special events occurred over NAIDOC Round.
