Winnacott Junior Football Club has been named winners of the 2017 WA Football Commission (WAFC) State Championships, the first South Metro football club to take out the title, following three thrilling contests that unfolded at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday, September 23. Winnacott put their best foot forward in the opening game of the championships against Mazenod, and finished with a 1.2 (8) – 0.2 (2) lead at the main break. IT was only fitting that a cracking contest and a good crowd despite the terrible early weather took place to farewell Subiaco Oval with Peel Thunder making it back-to-back WAFL premierships beating Subiaco by 16 points on Sunday.   Despite the heavy rain that fell earlier in the day particularly during the Reserves Grand Final and then in the first half of the league decider between the Thunder and Lions, it was a credit to the crowd of 18,180 who turned out to celebrate the farewell to football at Subiaco Oval.   The crowd is the biggest for the WAFL Grand Final since West Perth beat East Perth in 2013. SUBIACO has proven too strong in a wet Reserves Grand Final at Subiaco Oval beating the minor premier South Fremantle by 19 points on Sunday.   South Fremantle came into the game having been the standout team in the reserves for 2017 finishing as minor premiers and then winning straight through to the Grand Final having beaten Subiaco in the second semi-final.   Both teams then got some players back for the Reserves Grand Final after their league outfits played off in the league preliminary final last Sunday setting the stage for a tremendous contest. EAST Fremantle has capitalised on a standout WAFL Colts season by winning the premiership and ending Claremont's quest for a third straight flag with a 54-point win at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.   In the last ever Colts Grand Final to be held at Subiaco Oval, it was the minor premier East Fremantle who proved too strong.    The Sharks kicked the first six goals of the game to set up the eventual 12.5 (77) to 2.11 (23) victory. THE biggest day of the year is upon us on Sunday for the 2017 WAFL Grand Final between Peel Thunder and Subiaco at Domain Stadium with a massive day of celebrations planned for what will be the last official football match at Subiaco Oval. It's a rematch of last year's decider as well and it shapes as a fascinating, heated and ferocious WAFL Grand Final with Peel attempting to make history winning back-to-back premierships while the Lions are desperate to make up for last year's defeat. NEVER in his wildest dreams could Wayde Twomey have predicted a decade ago when he made the move west that he would have the success in the WAFL he has. Neither did he envision four Grand Finals in four years after joining Subiaco but that's the case as he chases a fairytale finish. Twomey originally joined Swan Districts from VFL club Werribee in 2008 as a string of recruits that would go on to inspire the black-and-whites to a Grand Final that first year, a preliminary final in 2009 and a remarkable premiership triumph in 2010. That led Twomey into a season in the AFL in Carlton where he played a couple of games at the top level, but then it was straight back to Swan Districts in 2012. He had another good two seasons capped off with a Simpson Medal performance representing the WAFL against the VFL in 2013. GERALD Ugle might not have had the individual season he hoped in 2017 but the fact that come Sunday evening he could be a dual premiership captain at Peel Thunder could more than make up for that. Ugle is now in his third season with Peel and his second year as captain and while he feels he can do more to impact games personally, it's hard to imagine how the move to join the Thunder could have turned out much better. As a talented youngster from Perth, Ugle was part of the inaugural Greater Western Sydney Giants team in the AFL and did play three matches before returning to the Demons in 2014. Read More ...

ADAM Cockie will never regret his time in Melbourne even though he missed a couple of Subiaco premierships while there but he desperately wants a second flag with the Lions and there would be no better time than his 100th WAFL game in Sunday's Grand Final. Cockie burst on to the scene at Subiaco in 2008, playing 22 games, representing Western Australia, playing in Subiaco's premiership and finishing third in the fairest and best before finding himself drafted by the West Coast Eagles. He went on to play seven games at West Coast in the AFL in 2009 before his season ended early through injury. NOTHING will stop Peel Thunder's greatest ever player Rory O'Brien from being there this week for the birth of his third child and that is creating a dramatic week as he prepares to try and become a dual premiership player. O'Brien and his wife Ebony were expected to welcome their third child, a daughter, into the world by Wednesday of this week making for quite the special Grand Final week as he prepares to line up for Peel against Subiaco at Domain Stadium on Sunday. IN four years since his time with Fremantle, Haiden Schloithe has turned himself into perhaps the best all-round player not in the AFL system in Australia and he couldn’t be prouder to have received the Sandover Medal after his outstanding 2017 season with South Fremantle. Schloithe originally joined South Fremantle from Katanning to play in a colts premiership before then being added to Fremantle's rookie-list for the 2012 and 2013 AFL seasons. He couldn’t quite make it for an AFL debut but when he returned to South Fremantle full-time in 2014, he was at the age and of the mindset where he was ready to really make his mark as an outstanding WAFL footballer. CLAREMONT's colts and Subiaco's reserves both won their respectively WAFL preliminary final matches on Sunday at Leederville Oval to book their places in the 2017 Grand Final. Preliminary final day at Leederville Oval began on Sunday morning with Claremont qualifying for a fourth consecutive Grand Final, beating East Perth 8.9 (57) to 6.9 (45).
