Shark Stephen's 100 games down to hard work, dedication

ANDREW Stephen served a long apprenticeship but has turned himself into a favourite of East Fremantle and now will bring up his 100th WAFL match this Saturday to add to a career already including two state appearances and a Lynn Medal. Stephen grew up the son of 1969 Lynn Medallist Peter and began playing colts with the Sharks in 2005, then served more than 50 games of an apprenticeship in the reserves before finally cementing a spot in the league team by 2010 having played 11 matches the previous two seasons. Lee hits the ground flying after injury-hit start to 2014

EAST Perth co-captain Brendan Lee missed the first six games of 2014 but has been superb the past fortnight in two just about best on ground performances to put him right in the mix to play in the WAFL team against the NEAFL next Saturday. Both before and after spending 2012 with Essendon in the AFL, Lee has likely cemented himself as the best midfielder in the WAFL. Having won the East Perth fairest and best in 2011, the Bendigo Bombers best and fairest in 2012 and then again the Royals' fairest and best last year, Lee has been consistent over a long period now but he suffered a hiccup on the eve of 2014 when he injured a finger and required surgery. Telstra offers WA football clubs the chance to share in $150,000

THE top-three WAFL teams all recorded strong Round 8 victories on Saturday before West Perth came from nowhere to snatch a win over Peel on Sunday to move into fourth place. The round began on Saturday afternoon with East Perth thrashing Claremont 19.10 (124) to 6.8 (44) at Medibank Stadium, Subiaco downing Perth 16.12 (108) to 11.8 (74) at Lathlain Park and Swan Districts were too good for East Fremantle 20.15 (135) to 10.15 (75) at Steel Blue Oval. Then on Sunday at Arena Joondalup, West Perth came from 42 points down at half-time, 30 points behind at three quarter-time and still 17 points back at time-on in the last quarter to snatch a win off Peel Thunder, 14.9 (93) to 14.8 (92). McMahon confident Demons squad can deliver

PERTH coach Damien McMahon feels he has the best squad at his disposal in his time in charge and now hopes the Demons can back up last week's win over Peel with a victory over the league-leading Subiaco this Saturday. Perth looked set to play finals for much of 2013 for the first time since 1997 until losing four of its last five matches to narrowly miss out. State 18 girls crowned National Champions

Western Australia have defeated powerhouse Victoria Metro in a nail biting Grand Final by 25 points, to be crowned the 2014 Youth Girls National Champions. Inspiring performances from WA’s Asha Price and Hayley Miller in the second quarter set up the 7.8 (50) to 4.1 (25) win that was one year in the making.
