EAST Fremantle might have only scored seven more goals over the final three quarters but 10 majors in a blistering first term was enough to see the Sharks claim a fourth straight WAFL victory and beat Perth by 24 points to conclude One Life Round on Sunday at ATOM Stadium.
East Fremantle came into the match fresh off the bye, on a three-game winning streak and having beaten Perth the last 11 times, and the Sharks looked set for a commanding victory thanks to a blistering 10-goal opening quarter.
That saw East Fremantle lead by 43 points at the first change, but Perth continued to fight hard against the odds and managed to kick 11 goals to seven over the last three quarters.
The Sharks did enough to hold on for the 17.14 (116) to 14.8 (92) victory though.
The win means that the Sharks have won four straight matches to improve to a 5-2 record on the season to be just the one game behind the league-leading Subiaco in second position on the ladder.
The round's action began with three matches on Saturday afternoon that saw Subiaco beat Peel Thunder 16.16 (112) to 7.10 (52) at Bendigo Bank Stadium, West Perth storm back with the last 12 goals to beat East Perth 17.16 (118) to 12.8 (80) at HBF Arena and Claremont defeated Swan Districts 10.18 (78) to 10.7 (67) at Sounness Park in Mt Barker.
Then the round concluded on Sunday at ATOM Stadium and while East Fremantle won its fourth match in-a-row, the bottom place Perth showed some encouraging signs over the last three quarters.
East Fremantle might have had the bye to freshen up from its win over South Fremantle, but came into the game without key midfielders Bradd Dalziell and Jamie McNamara as well as defender Matthew Jupp, and then lost State backman Andrew Stephen to a hamstring injury in the second quarter.
However, the Sharks did welcome back former captain and 100-game veteran Mark McGough and he was terrific on the ball finishing with 30 possessions, six inside 50s and a goal.
Captain Rory O'Brien also worked hard picking up the slack the absence of McNamara and Dalziell left, finishing with 29 disposals and five inside-50 entries.
Cameron Eardley also gathered 26 touches for East Fremantle with Liam Anthony fighting through the tag of Kieran Hug to compile 26 possessions as well to go with eight tackles and a goal.
Tom Hooker gathered 26 disposals for East Fremantle with Sean Henson finishing with 22 and Boston Williamson 17 off half-back after he went into defence after the injury to Stephen.
Rob Young also put in a tremendous performance in the ruck for the Sharks with 17 possessions, 34 hit outs, five marks and a goal while fellow big man James Bristow kicked four goals for the match.
Julian Locantro also kicked two majors in his first game for East Fremantle since crossing from East Perth with Brandon Ellis also kicking two.
Perth used Mitch Morton at full-forward in his first game back since Round 2 and he made the most of his opportunities kicking four goals from seven kicks and four marks.
Kurtis Chester, Mitch Browne and Brett Wolfenden all kicked two goals apiece as well for the Demons.
Liam McKenna returned to the Perth team after a one-week spell in the reserves and he was terrific all game against the Sharks with 34 possessions, eight marks, seven tackles and five inside-50 entries.
Aidan Tropiano continued his outstanding season up against his former side with another 29 disposals to go with five tackles, 13 clearances and a goal.
Jacob Payne also gathered 29 touches on the wing for the Demons while Browne finished with 22 disposals, Hug 21, Wolfenden 20, Daniel O'Sullivan 18 and Dene White 18.
Toby Gianatti also did well defensively at half-forward restricting Brock O'Brien to just the 10 disposals for the match while Jared Bell did well limiting the influence of George Hampson.
Perth's reserves started the morning at ATOM Stadium on Sunday with a strong 15.14 (104) to 8.4 (52) victory.
East Fremantle's colts finished the day on Sunday at ATOM Stadium with a 12.12 (84) to 8.7 (55) win over Perth as well.
Alex Newton finished with 23 possessions and four goals for East Fremantle with Jayden Quill booting two majors.
Fraser Perry compiled 27 possessions as well for the Sharks, Jesse Adamini 23, Nick Menegola 23, Senna Grljusich 18 and Stellan Grljusich 17.
