Nominations open for footy volunteer award

Nominations opened today for The Sunday Times WA Football Volunteer of the Year Award to coincide with the start of National Volunteer Week (May 12-18). The overall winner of The Sunday Times WA Football Volunteer of the Year Award will be announced at the 2014 Sandover Medal count and receive a trip for two to the 2014 AFL Grand Final, including flights, accommodation and tickets to the Grand Final breakfast function. SUBIACO, Swan Districts and East Perth all showed why they are the current top three teams in the WAFL with big wins on Saturday against Perth, East Fremantle and Claremont respectively. All three winners on Saturday recorded emphatic victories with Subiaco beating Perth 16.12 (108) to 11.8 (74) at Lathlain Park, Swan Districts downing East Fremantle 20.15 (135) to 10.15 (75) at Steel Blue Oval and East Perth thumping Claremont 19.10 (124) to 6.8 (44) at Medibank Stadium. McMahon confident Demons squad can deliver

PERTH coach Damien McMahon feels he has the best squad at his disposal in his time in charge and now hopes the Demons can back up last week's win over Peel with a victory over the league-leading Subiaco this Saturday. Perth looked set to play finals for much of 2013 for the first time since 1997 until losing four of its last five matches to narrowly miss out. ROUND 8 of the WAFL is split over Saturday and Sunday this weekend with Subiaco and Swan Districts still fighting over top spot at different venues while Peel looks for its first win and West Perth and Claremont try to keep in touch with the top-four. The action begins on Saturday afternoon with three matches that sees Perth play Subiaco at Lathlain Park, East Perth host Claremont at Leederville's Medibank Stadium and Swan Districts take on East Fremantle at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval. State 18 girls crowned National Champions

Western Australia have defeated powerhouse Victoria Metro in a nail biting Grand Final by 25 points, to be crowned the 2014 Youth Girls National Champions. Inspiring performances from WA’s Asha Price and Hayley Miller in the second quarter set up the 7.8 (50) to 4.1 (25) win that was one year in the making. West Perth beats Box Hill Hawks in Foxtel Cup thriller

WEST Perth is through to the semi finals of the 2014 Foxtel Cup having scored a gutsy two-point victory over the Box Hill Hawks at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night. The Falcons went into the contest as the underdogs against the reigning VFL premiers who have started the 2014 season with five wins and a draw, and who had 10 Hawthorn-listed AFL players at its disposal. ROUND 7 of the WAFL saw Swan Districts close in on top spot of the ladder with a win over Subiaco while East Perth consolidated itself in the top-four, and Perth and South Fremantle put themselves right back in the mix. All four Round 7 WAFL matches took place on Saturday with East Perth beating East Fremantle 11.9 (75) to 9.11 (65) at East Fremantle Oval, Perth downing Peel Thunder 10.17 (77) to 6.12 (48) and Bendigo Bank Stadium, South Fremantle thrashing Claremont 17.13 (115) to 8.3 (51) at Fremantle Oval and Swan Districts beating Subiaco 19.13 (127) to 13.6 (84) at Medibank Stadium.
