Round 8 McDonald's WAFL Wrap UpWednesday, May 13, 2015 - 11:18 AM - by Chris Pike

IT CERTAINLY was an eventful One Life Round of the WAFL on Saturday and Sunday and just some of that included a stunning finish by West Perth, remarkable start by East Fremantle, Claremont notching a second win and Subiaco moving further clear on top.

The round began with three matches on Saturday afternoon and it included West Perth coming back from trailing East Perth by 42 points going into time-on in the third quarter to kick the last 12 goals of the game to end up winning by 38, 17.16 (118) to 12.8 (80) at Joondalup's HBF Arena.

Subiaco and Peel Thunder went into the round in the top two spots but it was the reigning premier Lions who proved too good winning 16.16 (112) to 7.10 (52) at Mandurah's Bendigo Bank Stadium.

Claremont then hosted Swan Districts at Sounness Park in Mt Barker and the Tigers won their second straight match defeating the black-and-whites 10.18 (78) to 10.7 (67).

The round concluded on Sunday with East Fremantle kicking 10 goals in the opening quarter and then holding on to beat Perth 17.14 (116) to 14.8 (92) at East Fremantle's ATOM Stadium.

At the end of the weekend, Subiaco (6-1) sits a game clear on top of the ladder ahead of East Fremantle (5-2), West Perth (4-3), Peel Thunder (4-3) and South Fremantle (4-3).

Swan Districts (3-4) are just outside the top five followed by East Perth (3-4), Claremont (2-5) and Perth (1-7).

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Shane Yarran had a superb first season in the WAFL in 2014 with Subiaco kicking 39 goals and helping Lions to the premiership, but the 25-year-old has now cemented himself as the most dangerous forward in the competition so far in 2015.

Yarran kicked another six goals to go with 21 possessions and eight marks in Subiaco's 60-point win over Peel Thunder on Saturday and it continues his remarkable start to the season that will see him as one of the first picked for the WAFL's State team that plays South Australia next Saturday at Lathlain Park.

Yarran has now kicked 29 goals in six matches this season with his lowest tally being three against East Perth in Round 3 while he kicked four against Perth in Round 7, five in Rounds 1 and 2 against Claremont and East Fremantle, and now six in Round 5 against South Fremantle and on Saturday against Peel.

THE SHINING LIGHTS
Subiaco won its fourth straight match beating Peel Thunder by 60 points at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Saturday to see the Lions remain clear on top of the WAFL ladder.

Shane Yarran kicked another six goals from 21 possessions and eight marks in a stunning display in the forward-like for Subiaco with Kyle Halligan, Brett Mahoney and Charles Le Fanu all booting two majors apiece.

Clancy Wheeler also worked hard at centre half-forward with 20 touches, nine hit outs and six inside 50s.

Brett Robinson continues to show for Subiaco that he has plenty of gas left in the tank despite spending 2014 away from the WAFL. The Swan Districts' 2010 premiership player was outstanding in Saturday's win over Peel compiling 34 possessions to go with 11 marks, eight inside 50s and a goal.

Robinson's 2010 premiership teammate at Swans Wayde Twomey was also terrific in the win over the Thunder for the Lions with 25 disposals, 10 marks and five inside-50 entries.

Chris Phelan finished with 25 possessions as well for Subiaco, Will Fetherstonhaugh 20, Scott Hancock 20, Joel Latham 18 and Mahoney 18.

Leroy Jetta made the most of his opportunities as a small forward for Peel kicking three goals from just four kicks to be his team's only multiple goal scorers for the game.

Tendai Mzungu came back into the Peel line-up as he tries to force his way back into the unbeaten Fremantle AFL team, and he had 28 possessions and five tackles in the Thunder's loss to Subiaco.

Lachie Weller gathered 27 disposals as well with Jacob Ballard compiling 25, Tom Sheridan 22, Brendon Jones 19, Brayden Lawler 18, Hayden Crozier 18 and Ed Langdon 17.

In the absence of Jonathon Griffin, Jack Hannath stepped up as the No. 1 ruckman for Peel and had 41 hit outs but just six kicks, three handballs and one mark.

West Perth coach Bill Monaghan made some moves midway through the third quarter that ended up turning the match that included putting Michael Lourey into the middle for a stint, and moving Nick Rodda and Kody Manning from defence to attack, and pushing Andrew Strijk further up the ground.

Manning's ferocious attack on the man and ball helped turn the game and he kicked two goals either side of three quarter-time while Rodda provided a strong target forward and kicked a goal, Lourey won some crucial clearances in the middle and Strijk capped off a stunning individual performance.

Strijk finished with 31 possessions, nine inside-50 entries, seven marks and two goals for the game leaving him only rivalled for best on ground honours by Shane Nelson who compiled 43 possessions, 11 clearances and seven tackles.

Aaron Black also worked tirelessly for the Falcons racking up 34 disposals while taking eight marks and kicking two goals. Lourey, Matt Johnson, Jay van Berlo, Aidan Lynch and Manning all kicked two goals apiece as well for West Perth.

Jay van Berlo also finished with 22 possessions for West Perth, Laine Rasmussen 21, Steven Browne 20, Lynch 19, Luke Tedesco 18, Drew Rohde 17, Rohan Kerr 17 and Matt Guadagnin 17.

East Perth came into the game missing important midfielders Brendan Lee and Brant Colledge as well as gun defender, and sometime forward, Kyle Anderson and the lost Craig Wulff to concussion from early in the third quarter onwards.

However, the Royals dominated the last part of the first quarter, the whole of the second term and a large period of the third to lead by 42 points before failing to score a goal in the last 45 minutes to lose to West Perth by 38 points.

West Coast big man Scott Lycett finished with 20 possessions, seven marks, 34 hit outs and three goals for the Royals with Shayne Hill kicking two majors as well.

Steven Payne racked up 28 possessions for East Perth, Alec Waterman 28, Mark Hutchings 26, Patrick McGinnity 24, Kane Lucas 23 and Mitch Howlett 23.

Meanwhile, defensively Tom Barrass had a good battle on Lourey and Nathan Blee did well keeping Matt Fowler quiet.

Claremont lost its first five games of the season but got a win last week over West Perth and now backed that up on Saturday by going to Mt Barker and recording an 11-point win over Swan Districts to celebrate the opening of the new facilities at Sounness Park.

Oliver Tate played the best game of his WAFL career since joining Claremont from North Ballarat in the VFL this season finishing with 25 possessions and eight marks while also in the midfield, Tom Ledger racked up 31 disposals, nine marks, eight inside-50 entries and a goal.

Corey Yeo also gathered 22 possessions for the Tigers, Ian Richardson 21, Keifer Yu 20, Ryan Lim 20, Ryan Neates 18, Matthew Davies 17 and Haydn Busher 17.

Kepler Bradley and Jack Bradshaw kicked two goals apiece for Claremont with Brandon Franz and Lachlan Davey particularly effective in defence. Mark Seaby had a good battle in the ruck with Nathan Blakely, with Seaby finishing with 16 disposals, 31 hit outs and five tackles.

In the absence of Tim Geappen, Ricky Cary and Joel Houghton from the forward-line, Rudy Riddoch kicked three goals for Swan Districts as he made the most of his four kicks for the afternoon. Simon Donovan also kicked two majors for the black-and-whites.

Ryan Davis continued his terrific form for Swans finishing with 24 possessions, five marks, four tackles and four inside-50 entries.

Ruckman Nathan Blakely worked hard in his first game of the year after a finger injury ending up with 18 touches, 15 hit outs and a goal.

Aaron Elari also gathered 23 possessions for Swan Districts, Nathan Broad 23, Ben Whitsed 20 and Matt Riggio 18.

East Fremantle might have had the bye to freshen up from its win over South Fremantle, but came into the game without key midfielders Bradd Dalziell and Jamie McNamara as well as defender Matthew Jupp, and then lost State backman Andrew Stephen to a hamstring injury in the second quarter.

However, the Sharks did welcome back former captain and 100-game veteran Mark McGough and he was terrific on the ball finishing with 30 possessions, six inside 50s and a goal.

Captain Rory O'Brien also worked hard picking up the slack the absence of McNamara and Dalziell left, finishing with 29 disposals and five inside-50 entries.

Cameron Eardley also gathered 26 touches for East Fremantle with Liam Anthony fighting through the tag of Kieran Hug to compile 26 possessions as well to go with eight tackles and a goal.

Tom Hooker gathered 26 disposals for East Fremantle with Sean Henson finishing with 22 and Boston Williamson 17 off half-back after he went into defence after the injury to Stephen.

Rob Young also put in a tremendous performance in the ruck for the Sharks with 17 possessions, 34 hit outs, five marks and a goal while fellow big man James Bristow kicked four goals for the match.

Julian Locantro also kicked two majors in his first game for East Fremantle since crossing from East Perth with Brandon Ellis also kicking two.

Perth used Mitch Morton at full-forward in his first game back since Round 2 and he made the most of his opportunities kicking four goals from seven kicks and four marks.

Kurtis Chester, Mitch Browne and Brett Wolfenden all kicked two goals apiece as well for the Demons.

Liam McKenna returned to the Perth team after a one-week spell in the reserves and he was terrific all game against the Sharks with 34 possessions, eight marks, seven tackles and five inside-50 entries.

Aidan Tropiano continued his outstanding season up against his former side with another 29 disposals to go with five tackles, 13 clearances and a goal.

Jacob Payne also gathered 29 touches on the wing for the Demons while Browne finished with 22 disposals, Hug 21, Wolfenden 20, Daniel O'Sullivan 18 and Dene White 18.

Toby Gianatti also did well defensively at half-forward restricting Brock O'Brien to just the 10 disposals for the match while Jared Bell did well limiting the influence of George Hampson.

RESERVES STANDOUTS
Subiaco's reserves recorded a 14.12 (96) to 4.9 (33) win over Peel Thunder on Saturday at Bendigo Bank Stadium with Ryan Vermeersch kicking four goals, and Joel Ashman and Adam Creeper two apiece.

Simon Moore racked up 31 possessions for Subiaco, Luke Norriss 25, Tom Smith 25, Braden Fimmano 24, Ray Daniels 21, Max Walters 21 and ruckman Jordan Bestry 15 to go with six marks and 47 hit outs.

Nick Gajewski kicked two goals for Peel with Ben Hancock gathering 26 possessions, Corey Morriss 24, Garrick McLaughlin 21 and Reise Wilkey 18.

West Perth's reserves also recorded an emphatic 85-point victory over East Perth in the first derby between the Falcons and Royals of 2015, winning 20.14 (134) to 7.7 (49).

Hayden Yarran booted six goals from 13 possessions and 10 marks for the Falcons with Chris Franklin, Marc Crisp and Corey Chalmers booting two goals apiece. Chalmers also racked up 29 possessions.

Tyler Keitel played his third match in West Perth colours and got to enjoy the victory against his former team with three goals from 14 disposals and four marks.

Trent Manzone also racked up 35 possessions, eight marks, seven inside 50s and a goal for West Perth's reserves with Brayden Antonio compiling 23 disposals, Steve Potente 21, Blake Wilhelm 21, Broderick Walton 18, Crisp 17 and Joe Morrow 17.

Malcolm Karpany returned from injury for East Perth's reserves and finished with 20 possessions and a goal while Corey Adamson picked up 17 disposals and Marty Zambotto 16. Scott Jones had 31 hit outs in the ruck.

Claremont and Swan Districts played off in a reserves contest at the Showground on Sunday afternoon, and it was the Tigers who came away with a 19.7 (121) to 6.8 (44) victory.

Keegan Knott kicked six goals as a small forward for Claremont with Sam Bevan booting five, Alexander Manuel three and Harrison McCracken two, and Maximillian Bentley two.

Matthew Goyder also picked up 24 possessions for the Tigers, Ben Higgs 22, Tom Willett 20, McCracken 20, Bentley 19 and Steven Edwards 19.

Matthew Jukes kicked three goals for Swans with Ricky Cary booting two while Adam Faulkner compiled 23 possessions, Jacob Burnham 20 and Albert Dean 18.

Perth's reserves started the morning at ATOM Stadium on Sunday with a strong 15.14 (104) to 8.4 (52) victory.

Callum Walley and Daniel Arangio kicked three goals apiece for Perth with Lachlan Dennis and Blake Borrett adding two apiece.

Kane Ransted finished with 24 possessions for the Demons, Dennis 24, Walley 22, Sam McGillivray 20, Arangio 19, Rowan Garlett 17 and Borrett 17 to go with 24 hit outs and his two goals.

Dion Anthony kicked two goals for East Fremantle with Aaron Holmes picking up 26 possessions, Barry Barone 22, Michael Edwards 20, Anthony 19, Jacob Green 18 and Adrian Ricciardello 18.

REDiMED COLTS RISING STARS
Subiaco's colts scored a thrilling three-point victory over Peel Thunder at Bendigo Bank Stadium, winning 10.8 (68) to 9.11 (65).

Michael Braut kicked three goals for the Lions and Tom Lowness two while Ethan Burnett gathered 22 disposals and Josh Underwood 19.

Karl Collard and Nicholas Merritt kicked two goals each for the Thunder with Hayden Davis racking up 27 touches, Michael Humble 26, Merritt 22 and Keegan Power 19.

West Perth's colts missed a chance to consolidate top spot on the ladder with East Perth starting the day at HBF Arena with a 10.13 (73) to 7.7 (49) victory on Saturday.

Daniel Robertson kicked two goals in the loss for the Falcons colts while Ben Mountford compiled 23 possessions, Scott Nelson 23, Troy Manners 21, Conal Lynch 19, Jacob Turner 17, Brody Zanon 16, Tim Smith 16, Angus Allen 16, Alphonse Charlie 16 and Kael Coleman 16.

Sam Boseun, Joel Gare and Blair Della Franca all kicked two goals each for East Perth with Mitch Dobson amassing 28 possessions, Stanley Wright 22, Alex Di Placido 19 and Kobe Chrisp.

Claremont and Swan Districts' colts met on Sunday at the Showground in a rematch of last year's grand final, and it was the Tigers who got a measure of revenge on the reigning premiers winning 10.13 (73) to 6.23 (59).

Bronson Harry kicked five goals for Claremont while Jacob Sideris compiled 31 possessions, Ryan Murphy 30, Tom Gajewski 28, Regan Smith 19 and Sam McPhee 17.

Jarrod Shorter picked up 23 possessions for Swan Districts with Ben Gillard gathering 22 touches, Brody Sutton 19 and Rohan Armstrong 18.

East Fremantle's colts finished the day on Sunday at ATOM Stadium with a 12.12 (84) to 8.7 (55) win over Perth as well.

Alex Newton finished with 23 possessions and four goals for East Fremantle with Jayden Quill booting two majors.

Fraser Perry compiled 27 possessions as well for the Sharks, Jesse Adamini 23, Nick Menegola 23, Senna Grljusich 18 and Stellan Grljusich 17.

David Smith and Arnold Punch kicked two goals each for Perth's colts with Reid Polak racking up 29 possessions, Kayle Phillips 27 and Chapman Jones 26.
