Ames' passion drives him to 200, won't rule out 250

Thursday, May 1, 2014 - 8:39 PM - by Chris Pike
IT IS hard to imagine that a more passionate man has ever represented the Swan Districts Football Club than Tallan Ames and as he prepares for his 200th game and something would have to change in the rest of 2014 for him to not set the goal of reaching 250. Ames grew up supporting Swan Districts, played colts football with Swans, reserves football and then earned his league debut in 2002, cemented a spot in the team by 2004 and has now gone on to amass a tremendous 199-game career at the club that means the world to him. The current captain is a premiership player from 2010, Swan Medal winner as the fairest and best from 2011 and has gone on to represent Western Australia on three occasions as he now becomes the 14th Swan Districts player and first since Joel Cornelius in 2005 to reach the 200-game mark. Higgins thriving on No. 1 ruck role at Bulldogs

Thursday, May 1, 2014 - 7:14 PM - by Chris Pike
BROCK Higgins has been thrust into South Fremantle's No. 1 ruck role early in his time with the Bulldogs and thrived, and it could have been the best thing to happen to him after an interrupted pre-season crossing from East Perth. Higgins played 30 matches over the last three seasons at East Perth but with the Royals still possessing Josh Smith and Paul Johnson on top of Eagles talls Fraser McInnes, Jeremy McGovern, Callum Sinclair and Scott Lycett it was always going to be tough for the versatile big man to get a regular game in 2014. Swans to keep using motivational tools on milestone day

Thursday, May 1, 2014 - 6:46 PM - by Chris Pike
TALLAN Ames deserves a big stage for his 200th WAFL match and he gets it this Saturday as his Swan Districts take on Subiaco in a top-of-the-table clash with Swans set to continue using criticisms from others to spur them on. Swan Districts were written off by most pundits coming into the 2014 season but what stung the black-and-whites the most were the players who left their club to join rival WAFL sides thinking they would have more success, and the ones who returned to WA but elected to play elsewhere. However, what has resulted is a passionate group at Swan Districts full of heart and spirit, playing to the plans from the coach perfectly and that have won four straight matches following a narrow opening game loss to East Perth. Captain Cook relieved that Bulldogs are on the board

Thursday, April 24, 2014 - 2:49 AM - by Chris Pike
RYAN Cook took South Fremantle's slow start to the 2014 WAFL season to heart and called in the Bulldogs' last two captains to help inspire the group, and as a result he enjoyed Saturday's win over West Perth as much as anyone. Cook is now in his fourth season at South Fremantle and his third as captain following on from premiership skippers David Gault and Toby McGrath. The 26-year-old former Collingwood player of 14 AFL matches has certainly made his mark since arriving at South Fremantle in 2011 with two fairest and best awards under his belt, but another slow start to the season to open 2014 was the last thing he was hoping for, or expecting.
