The West Australian Football Commission has appointed Glen Morgan as Female Football Umpire Coordinator for season 2016 to help attract more umpires to Female Competitions and develop their umpiring skills.
WAFC Female Football Coordinator Allana Dickie said the appointment was an important step toward developing plans to improve the standard of umpiring within the female competitions.
"Glen brings a wealth of football experience and enthusiasm with him to his new role, which I am confident will attract new umpires into the system as we progress toward a national competition next year,” Dickie said.
"While the previous system of relying on umpires from the Amateur competitions has worked well, it is important to begin to gather a group of umpires specifically dedicated to the female competition.
“The WA Women's Football League is committed to increasing the standing of umpiring and to this end, among several changes, new umpire payments have been introduced," she said.
"Whilst not increasing payments across the board, league match umpires will now be paid more as a way of promoting extra competition and incentive for umpires to strive for the top.”
Dickie also explained that in order to increase performance within umpire ranks, one match per round would be umpired by a full panel of WAFL Talent Pathway umpires.
"This is a huge win for female football as we expect it to encourage younger umpires to become involved as they will be able to observe Talent Umpires. This in turn will help less experienced umpires understand just what they have to do if they aspire to umpire in an expanded national competition next year.
“Not only will this improve umpiring, it will also inevitably improve playing standards, as both are complementary. This in turn will attract more players and spectators to the games,” she said.
