Domain Stadium aiming for record Derby

The West Australian Football Commission is calling on all footy fans to get along to the last ever Carlton Draught Derby at Domain Stadium this Sunday, July 16, in a bid to set a new attendance record. A total of 1,795,683 people have attended the 45 Derbies played at Subiaco since 1995. The largest crowd ever was 43,527 for a West Coast Eagles home game in Round 21, 2006. "With over 40,000 fans expected to be in attendance the atmosphere for the match should be electric and will take the total crowd figure for all 46 Derbies to more than 1.8 million," WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor said. 100-years strong for milestone trainer

It has been almost 40 years since East Perth won the 1978 WAFL Premiership but 100-year old trainer Ted O'Callaghan remembers it like it was yesterday. "It was a great win on a very wet day, I remember we got flooded on the bench," he said. O'Callaghan, who turns 101 on July 20, was an honoured guest of the West Australian Football Commission at the recent Fremantle v St. Kilda AFL game. He was joined by 1978 East Perth captain-coach and Hall of Fame Legend Barry Cable and 1978 East Perth assitant coach Grant Dorrington, who is now a WAFC Commissioner. Round 16 Reserves and Colts Wrap

SOUTH Fremantle's reserves extended its lead on top of the ladder with a win over the second-placed Claremont in Round 16 on Saturday while East Fremantle won big in the REDiMED Colts to hold off the chasing Peel Thunder and Claremont. The Round 16 reserves matches all took place on Saturday beginning with the league-leading South Fremantle beating Claremont 13.9 (87) to 9.8 (62) at Claremont Oval. Subiaco hammered Perth 24.14 (158) to Perth 6.6 (42) at Leederville Oval, East Fremantle won a thriller 10.14 (74) to 10.13 (73) over Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval and Peel Thunder prevailed in a tight one over West Perth 13.10 (88) to 11.14 (80) at HBF Arena. IT was NAIDOC Round in the WAFL on Saturday with Steven Edwards, Adam Cockie, Tim Kelly, Kirk Ugle, Traye Bennell and Liam Ryan among the Indigenous players to shine but they were far from the only standout performers. All four Round 16 WAFL matches took place on Saturday starting with South Fremantle ending its NAIDOC Round drought against Claremont with a 14.7 (91) to 10.6 (66) victory at Claremont Oval with Haiden Schloithe and Tim Kelly on fire. Umpire Dean Margetts reaches 400-game milestone

Perth-based AFL and WAFL umpire Dean Margetts will umpire his 400th league match when he umpires the St. Kilda and Essendon game at Etihad Stadium on Friday, July 14. Over his umpiring career, Dean has officiated in 109 WAFL matches and this weekend will mark his 291st AFL game. Read More ...


WA flavour for Boomerangs and World Team

Thirteen WA players are representing the Flying Boomerangs and World under 16 national team as part of the NAB AFL National 16s Championships on the Gold Coast this week. Selected by AFL Club recruiters following the 2016 AFL National Diversity Championships held in Townsville earlier this year, the respective squads of 30 young men have been chosen based on school attendance, leadership skills, and football ability. The AFL Flying Boomerangs program is a personal development and leadership program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young men aged 14-16 years old, while the World Team is made up of the best upcoming AFL multicultural players from across the nation. State 16s claim thrilling win over Vic Country

A pack mark and a goal after the siren by East Perth's Rhai-arn Cox snatched a one-point win for the Deppro WA State 16s over Victoria Country at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast today, Monday July 10. WA led early in the contest and were up by 25 points at quarter time before a strong second term from Vic Country saw them take a four point lead into the half time break.  Vic Country extended their lead to a goal at three-quarter time and then pushed ahead by 19 points midway through the final quarter before a WA resurgence that resulted in the last five scoring shots of the game, including the match-winning goal to Cox. Peel win Landmark Country Championships

PEEL Football and Netball League claimed the 2017 Landmark Country Football Championships Division One title with a win over the South West Football League in the Grand FInal at Leederville Oval on Sunday July 9. It was the second straight year the two had met in the Division 1 Grand Final and back-to-back titles for Peel. IT was NAIDOC Round in the WAFL on Saturday with Subiaco again asserting its dominance while the teams just below them South Fremantle, Peel Thunder and Swan Districts all recorded victories. The top four WAFL teams all had victories on Saturday to celebrate NAIDOC Round in recognition and celebration of the Indigenous culture and the contributions made to the game with all eight clubs wearing specially designed jumpers along with artwork on the Burley footballs. The traditional NAIDOC Round clash has been Claremont taking on South Fremantle, and after a slow start, the second placed Bulldogs proved too strong for the Tigers winning 14.7 (91) to 10.6 (66) at Claremont Oval. BEING in some remarkable career-best form makes this Saturday a good time for Haiden Schloithe to celebrate his 100-game milestone with South Fremantle but while he's proud of the mark, it's team success with the Bulldogs he craves. Schloithe is another proud product of Katanning to play with South Fremantle and having achieved colts success playing in the 2011 premiership and then being rookie-listed by Fremantle. He made his league debut at South Fremantle in 2012 and didn’t take long to cement his spot, and he has remained ever since splitting roles between being a strong ball-winning and hard running midfielder, and a dangerous and clever half-forward.
