A hundred people came together to celebrate the growing engagement between football and the Islamic communities in Perth at the annual Ramadan Dinner recently hosted by the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) and AFL.
A host of special guests attended the dinner at Claremont Oval on Tuesday, June 5, including the Minister for Water, Fisheries, Forestry, Innovation and Science Mr Chris Tallentire MLA, and WAFC Chief Executive Gavin Taylor.
The AFL Community Ambassador award was presented to Sara Mohammed for her endless work with refugees and promoting our great game in the Muslim community.
Dinner guests also got to hear from a panel of special guests including West Coast Eagles Head Coach of Game Development Drew Petrie, Fremantle Dockers Next Generation Academy Coach Tendai Mzungu, and WA All Nations players Mostafa Noori and Nasman Donovan.
The panel discussed the importance of the next generation academies and the quality and characteristics multicultural youth bring to the game.
Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, which marks a period of prayer, fasting, charity-giving and self-accountability for Muslims in Australia.
The dinner is designed to promote cross-cultural understanding between those of the Islamic faith and the wider community using football as common ground.
