East Fremantle’s rigorous recruiting campaign has continued with the signing of big man Cameron Loersch. Standing at 203cm, the forward/ruck is known for his ability to take a strong contested mark. Coach Rob Wiley said his strength and size are set to have a major impact on the Sharks in 2018. “Loersch is a welcomed addition, giving us some marking power up forward as well as being able to ruck,” he said. The West Australian Football Commission has finalised its 2017-2022 Strategic Plan as the culmination of 12 months of work and review. The plan was developed following the 2016/2017 Structural Review of WA Football (SRF) where the WAFC, in conjunction with the Boston Consulting Group, reviewed all competitions, pathways, structures and governance models across WA Football. The review included deep consultation with key stakeholders backed by industry research and comparison against best practise sporting organisations across Australia and overseas. The SRF identified that whilst football had solid foundations in WA, significant reform was required to meet the challenges and demands required for our game to continue to thrive from grass roots football through to elite pathways. East Fremantle Football Club has secured another significant signing as part of its 2018 recruiting campaign, with former Essendon player Nick Kommer inking a two-year deal with Sharks. The explosive and hard-nosed mid/forward played 22 games for Essendon, where he made a name for himself as one of the toughest players in the competition. Eleven West Australians have been selected in the Rio Tinto Woomeras and Medleys squads, following the 2017 AFL National Female Diversity Championships held in Byron Bay last month. In a major boost for WA Football, the AFL will invest an additional $1 million per year into the West Australian Football Commission’s restructured talent development model. The ongoing annual commitment of an additional $1 million in AFL funding will support the delivery of an enhanced talent development model, which has been developed in partnership with the AFL and nine WAFL clubs based on the findings of the WAFC’s recent Structural Review of Football. The new talent development model will see the WAFC, WAFL clubs and the AFL join forces to provide improved talent pathways, an enhanced WAFL Colts competition and greater opportunities for WA’s most talented players. The East Fremantle Football Club has announced the key signing of Jonathon Griffin, a passionate Sharks man who will once again pull on the Blue and White, for seasons 2018 and 2019. In speaking of his return to ‘Shark Park’ Griffin said it’s great to be back playing for the club he supported as a kid. “I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “I’m looking forward to hopefully playing some finals football in the next couple of years and I think there are some exciting times ahead.” Coach Rob Wiley said he was delighted to have Griffin back at East Fremantle to not only lead the ruck division, but to be a key figure in driving the expectations and standards of the club. “It’s great to have not only his talent but his leadership and passion to bring success back to this footy club,” Wiley said. BY winning Claremont's fairest and best award for 2017 ahead of Jye Bolton only further highlights the tremendous future that Tigers midfielder Bailey Banfield as he claimed the EB Cook Medal. Banfield got some league opportunities late in the 2016 season where he showed he was more than ready for the level, but it was a year where he had again shone at colts level ending up third in fairest and best voting while taking the MVP award in the premiership year. Albany’s Great Southern Storm Football Development Institute celebrated its 10th anniversary on Friday October 20 with a special event to pay tribute to everyone involved over the journey. The program, which has produced nine AFL draftees, 14 WAFL League players and six members of the Deppro WA State 18s Academy in the last decade, has received ongoing support from the local community and Claremont Football Club. Great Southern Storm Chairman Joe Burton said that a very professional and well-run program, supported not only by all the GSFL clubs, but fully supported by the WA Country Football League, was now the envy of other country leagues throughout the State. The West Australian Football Commission, the AFL and State Government have reached an agreement regarding the funding model for WA football, with AFL football moving to the new Perth Stadium in 2018. WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor said he was pleased to have reached an outcome which will enable football to continue to be the premier sport across the state of Western Australia for years to come. A total of nine West Australian players were selected in the 2017 NAB AFL Women's Draft, including two top 10 selections. They included Swan Districts Women Football Club's Stephanie Cain who was redrafted by the Fremantle Dockers with the second pick, after being delisted at the end of last season.
