AFL clubs lock in community camp visits

The Fremantle Dockers kick off the AFL Community Camps this week with players visiting the Peel, Mandurah and Wheatbelt regions. Players from the West Coast Eagles will reach out to communities in Busselton, Port Hedland, Newman and Perth Metro over February 13 to 14. With all 18 AFL Clubs participating, the AFL Community Camps see over 750 players each spending two days meeting fans and developing stronger links between Australian Football and the community.  Read More ...


2017 WAFC Life Member announced

THE West Australian Football Commission has announced that WAFC Life Membership will be awarded to long-serving community football identity Bruce Wainwright.    WAFC Chairman Murray McHenry said that Mr Wainwright had provided outstanding and distinguished service to WA football for more than 50 years as an umpire and administrator across junior and senior competitions since 1963.   Read More ...


Football diversity showdown

Western Australia’s top male footballers aged 13-16 from diverse backgrounds converged on Lathlain Oval Saturday, 25 November, and competed in the inaugural WA Football Diversity Talent Day in front of a crowd of more than 500. Hosted by the WA Football Commission (WAFC) in partnership with the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers, the day featured four football matches involving the Fremantle Dockers’ Next Generation Academy, coached by Brady Grey, West Coast’s Naitanui Next Generation Academy led by head coach Drew Petrie, and the WAFC All Nations and Kickstart teams. WA records strong growth in football participation

Western Australia has held onto its position as the highest football participation state outside of Victoria, with a record 330,001 participants taking part in the sport in 2017.   The official release of 2017 AFL Census figures today saw a 9% increase on WA’s 2016 participation total with female football leading the way via a 28% increase. WA football participation made up 21.3% of Australia’s overall total of 1,547,915, which increased nationally by 10.2%.   WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor thanked the efforts of all volunteers involved in our great game. Join us in celebrating Indigenous Football at Subiaco Oval

The West Australian Football Commission is partnering with Beyond West to present a sneak preview of the new Aussie Rules Series 'Nyoongar Footy Magic - A Team of Champions' as part of the last ever open day at Subiaco Oval. The football event will be held on the hallowed turf of the historic venue on Sunday December 10 from 4pm to 7pm for fans and their families who want to experience WA's home of Football in all its beauty for the final time.  A selection of cuts of the Footy Magic TV series will be up on the big scoreboard screen, and people can take part in a medal ceremony for all the stars who appear in the series.  Read More ...


Five WA talents added to AFL Rookie lists

THE West Australian Football Commission congratulates the five WAFL players added to AFL Rookie lists during today’s AFL Rookie Draft.   They included Bailey Banfield (Claremont), Ryan Burrows (South Fremantle), Liam Baker (Subiaco), Gordon Narrier (Perth) and Callan England (Claremont).   This takes the total number of WA players drafted in 2017 to 20, including 15 in the NAB AFL National Draft on Friday, November 24. 2017 WA Football Hall of Fame induction

TEN of Western Australia’s football greats were inducted to the NAB West Australian Football Hall of Fame in a special event on the playing surface at Domain Stadium on Sunday, November 26. Haydn Bunton Senior was also elevated to ‘Legend’ status on the night, becoming the 17th Legend along with his Haydn Bunton Jnr, who accepted on his behalf, Barry Cable, George Doig, Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer, Stan ‘Pops’ Heal, John Lenoard, Denis Marshall, Phil Matson, Merv McIntosh, Steve Marsh, George Moloney, Graham Moss, Jack Sheedy, John Todd, WJ ‘Nipper’ Truscott and Bill Walker. WAFC congratulates AFL draftees

THE West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) congratulates the 15 WAFL players selected in the 2017 NAB AFL National Draft in Sydney tonight, which included three first round selections. First round selections included Aaron Naughton, pictured, (Peel Thunder) at number 9, Brandon Starcevich (East Perth) at number 18 and Wil Powell (Claremont) at number 19. Inaugural Naitanui Cup a great success

More than 100 Indigenous and multicultural footballers showcased their athleticism and skills at the inaugural Nic Naitanui Cup held on Friday, November 17 at Leederville Oval. Seven teams made up of Naitanui Academy program participants battled it out for the Cup in a round-robin tournament. East Perth White claimed the Cup after defeating a spirited Swan Districts outfit. WA's leading draft prospects

As we near closer to the AFL National Draft, we take a look at Western Australia's most promising young talented footballers who made waves in the National and State Combines last month and have attracted the attention of recruiters. One of these players is Subiaco's Kyron Hayden who broke the record for the running vertical leap at the National Combine in Melbourne. Another big signing for the Sharks

East Fremantle’s rigorous recruiting campaign has continued with the signing of big man Cameron Loersch. Standing at 203cm, the forward/ruck is known for his ability to take a strong contested mark. Coach Rob Wiley said his strength and size are set to have a major impact on the Sharks in 2018. “Loersch is a welcomed addition, giving us some marking power up forward as well as being able to ruck,” he said. Selected in the 2016 AFL Rookie Draft from South Fremantle, the 22-year-old returns to WA after two years on the Gold Coast Suns’ list. Read More ...


WAFC 2017-2022 Strategic Plan finalised

The West Australian Football Commission has finalised its 2017-2022 Strategic Plan as the culmination of 12 months of work and review. The plan was developed following the 2016/2017 Structural Review of WA Football (SRF) where the WAFC, in conjunction with the Boston Consulting Group, reviewed all competitions, pathways, structures and governance models across WA Football. The review included deep consultation with key stakeholders backed by industry research and comparison against best practise sporting organisations across Australia and overseas. The SRF identified that whilst football had solid foundations in WA, significant reform was required to meet the challenges and demands required for our game to continue to thrive from grass roots football through to elite pathways. Another key signing for the Sharks

East Fremantle Football Club has secured another significant signing as part of its 2018 recruiting campaign, with former Essendon player Nick Kommer inking a two-year deal with Sharks. The explosive and hard-nosed mid/forward played 22 games for Essendon, where he made a name for himself as one of the toughest players in the competition. Prior to that he played 27 WAFL League games with East Perth in 2011 and 2012. Kommer said he was excited to play with East Fremantle under coach Rob Wiley and his team. Read More ...
