Governor Stirling SHS has won the Eagles Schoolboys Cup for the first time, defeating Emmanuel Catholic College by five points in a thrilling Waalitj Division Grand Final at Optus Stadium on Sunday.
Three consecutive goals early in the second half proved decisive as Governor Stirling ran out winners - 5.1 (31) to 4.2 (26).
Emmanuel Catholic College started strongly and held a seven-point half time advantage before surrendering the lead in the opening minutes of the second half as Governor Stirling took control of the game.
The two sides traded goals late in the game but Governor Stirling’s defence held firm as they held on to claim victory.
Oscar Grundy from Governor Stirling was awarded the Ross Davis Medal for best on ground.
WAFC Schools Specialist David Lindsay said that the introduction of an elite division in the Eagles Schoolboys Cup this season had proved to be a huge success.
“We received feedback from schools that they would like to establish a two-tiered competition and the two divisions have been extremely competitive this year," he said.
"The quality of the football played in the Waalitj Division has been exceptional and the display from both schools in the Grand Final was very impressive.”
