Miller proud to not be limping to 300 games

Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - 11:07 PM - by Chris Pike
CONSISTENCY, quality and longevity easily sum up the remarkable WAFL career of Kris Miller who this Friday night will join the all-time greats of West Australian football becoming just the sixth player in the competition's storied history to play 300 matches. Miller has never missed a game through injury in his entire career that began at East Fremantle in 1999 and while he hasn’t missed a game, there has been no drop off in form either throughout each one of his 299 matches in the WAFL to date either as a midfielder or half-forward. Broadbridge still aiming for Tigers to contend for flag

Friday, March 21, 2014 - 1:16 PM - by Chris Pike
NEW Claremont coach Michael Broadbridge sees no reason why the Tigers can't remain a premiership contender in 2014 despite the loss of a bevy of star players. It is easy to look at the list of departures from Claremont that includes Ian Richardson, David Crawford, Chad Jones, Paul Medhurst, James Thomson, Jesse Laurie and Andrew Browne, and think the Tigers might fall down the WAFL ladder in 2014. However, Broadbridge can't see that happening with the players departing opening up opportunities both for those in the side to take on more responsibility, and for others at the club to receive more regular chances in the league side. Selective recruiting tops up Falcons nicely

Friday, March 21, 2014 - 12:07 PM - by Chris Pike
WEST Perth wanted to add some height with the loss of Frank Stockley, Michael Pettigrew and Josh Mellington coming into 2014, and premiership coach Bill Monaghan likes the look of arrivals Seva Martin, Matthew Spencer and Marcus Adams already. There was no need for the Falcons to look to make many changes following the 2013 premiership victory with only captain Jason Salecic retiring, Fremantle's Mellington being delisted and Mark Hutchings being forced to play with East Perth while listed by West Coast. Those are the only three players not at the club in 2014 who played in the premiership and then Frank Stockley wanted the chance to be a No. 1 ruckman so left for Subiaco after winning the WAFL's best reserves player award in 2013. Dawson wants hurt from grand final loss to spur on Royals

Thursday, March 20, 2014 - 2:47 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Perth coach Brian Dawson is ignoring all the focus on the Royals' partnership with West Coast and is simply down to business about trying to go one better in 2014 than last year's grand final loss to West Perth. Dawson was in his first season as coach of East Perth in 2013 and made an immediate impact pulling together a side that in the past had been talented, but inconsistent and hadn’t played off in a WAFL grand final since the last of its premiership hat-trick in 2002. However, the 2010 Swan Districts premiership coach was able to get everything to click to beat Swan Districts in the first semi-final, Claremont in the preliminary final and then only fall short against the Falcons in the grand final in a premiership decider that was right up for grabs midway through the third quarter. Dalziell to be Malaxos' No. 1 weapon for Sharks

Thursday, March 20, 2014 - 2:14 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Fremantle coach Steve Malaxos isn’t concerned about the loss of AFL talent at the Sharks coming into 2014 and instead will be looking to make the most of the return of Bradd Dalziell from the top level both on and off the field. The Sharks have been one of the WAFL clubs with the most AFL-listed players regularly at their disposal largely because of their own production of line of players into the AFL, but now with West Coast and Fremantle joining up with East Perth and Peel, that obviously won't be happening in 2014. That means that the likes of Josh Simpson, Max Duffy, Brad Sheppard, Jacob Brennan, Cameron Sutcliffe, Mitch Brown and Sam Menegola won't be running around for East Fremantle, but that isn’t something that has bothered Malaxos. Departed stars far from irreplaceable for Swans: Harding

Tuesday, March 18, 2014 - 5:38 PM - by Chris Pike
SWAN Districts coach Greg Harding sees none of his departed players for 2014 as being irreplaceable as he looks to some players on the comeback from horror injury runs, and youngsters to ensure the black-and-whites remain a competitive force this WAFL season. Much has been made of the departures at Swan Districts coming into the season which includes Wayde Twomey, Shaun Hildebrandt, Brett Robinson, Kyle Hams, Tom Roach, Dayle Garlett, Jamie Bennell, Charlie Cameron and Rory Lobb. In fact from Swan Districts' 2010 premiership team only Travis Casserly, Tallan Ames, Graham Jetta, Ryan Davis, Matt Riggio, Justin Simpson and Tim Geappen remain at the club in 2014. Read More ...
