Subiaco's three midfielders deliver premiership glory

Thursday, September 25, 2014 - 5:20 PM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO relied almost exclusively on three main midfielders throughout the 2014 season and that faith in Jason Bristow, Chris Phelan and Kyal Horsley was rewarded in Sunday's grand final win over East Perth with the trio far and away the three best players on the ground. Second-year coach Jarrad Schofield relied on Bristow, Phelan and Horsley for the bulk of the work in the midfield right throughout the season while opposition teams regularly rotated between six and 10 players through their on-ball division. While the Subiaco trio did get some chop outs, they were relied on to get the job done and were big reasons why the Lions ended up finishing in second position on the ladder, and then making the grand final. East Perth grand final player ratings

Thursday, September 25, 2014 - 3:40 AM - by Chris Pike
EAST Perth lost its second grand final in 12 months on Sunday against Subiaco at Patersons Stadium with the Royals unable to get close enough to having 22 strong contributors like the Lions had on the occasion. 1. Dean Cadwallader – 7 He had a poor grand final last year in East Perth's loss to West Perth and then had an off-season hernia operation that delayed his start to 2014, but once he got his chance he grabbed it and also performed well in the grand final despite the loss to Subiaco. Didn’t get his chance until Round 16 this year, but once he did he was just about best on ground in his three matches leading into the grand final including the second semi-final win over Subiaco. Continuing his new role as a running half-back, he finished the grand final with 19 possessions, eight marks, eight inside-50 entries, five rebounds from defensive 50, four tackles and a terrific long goal in the last quarter that gave the Royals a slight sniff.  Read More ...

Subiaco grand final player ratings

Thursday, September 25, 2014 - 12:23 AM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO pulled off a stunning WAFL grand final victory over East Perth on Sunday at Patersons Stadium to claim the 2014 premiership with veterans, youngsters and recruits all pivotal to the triumph of the Lions. 1. Jason Bristow – 9.5 The 30-year-old had been a tremendous servant for Subiaco since arriving in 2008 from Melbourne but he was simply outstanding in the grand final victory as the best player on the ground and deservedly winning the Simpson Medal. After missing the 2008 premiership and then playing in the losing grand finals of 2009 and 2011, the flag is a just reward for the service provided over 114 matches. He had already proved himself able to deliver in a grand final as Subiaco's best player in the 2011 loss to Claremont, but this time he led his team to a flag with his physical approach perfectly suited to the wet conditions. He finished with 27 possessions, seven clearances, five tackles, four inside-50 entries and a crucial goal just before three quarter-time. Read More ...

Subiaco prove too tough to win 2014 WAFL premiership

Sunday, September 21, 2014 - 6:56 PM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO has handled the wet conditions and grand final stage perfectly to hand East Perth a second straight grand final defeat to the tune of 16 points to win the 2014 premiership at Patersons Stadium. Despite East Perth being heavily favoured to win the 2014 premiership coming off losing last year's grand final to West Perth, then winning the minor premiership two games clear on top of the ladder and beating Subiaco in the second semi-final, the Lions had all the answers on Sunday. The wet conditions for the grand final suited the likes of Jason Bristow, Chris Phelan, Kyal Horsley, Chris Deluca and his younger brother Josh ideally, and Subiaco opened up a match-winning lead in the third quarter and won 11.16 (82) to 9.12 (66). West Perth wins 2014 reserves premiership

Sunday, September 21, 2014 - 2:49 PM - by Chris Pike
WEST Perth kicked the only three goals of the final quarter to beat Subiaco by 14 points in the WAFL reserves grand final to end a drought that stretches way back to 1960. The Falcons had not won a reserves premiership since 1960 and lost last year's grand final to South Fremantle, but finished the stronger over the minor premiers Subiaco on Sunday at Patersons Stadium to come away with the victory. Subiaco had finished the season clear on top of the reserves ladder and had a massive percentage while scoring a thumping second semi-final win also over West Perth, but the Falcons finished the better in the wet conditions of the grand final. Swan Districts win 2014 WAFL colts premiership

Sunday, September 21, 2014 - 12:08 PM - by Chris Pike
SWAN Districts was the best team in the WAFL colts all season and prevailed over Claremont in the grand final on Sunday morning at Patersons Stadium by 20 points, but the Tigers made them work for it. Swans lost just two matches all season and then advanced straight to the grand final with a thrilling second semi-final win over Claremont before the Tigers advanced to the decider with a one-point nail-biting victory over South Fremantle in the preliminary final. Swan Districts led all day in the grand final, though, kicking four goals into the breeze in the opening quarter and then dominating the last term with the advantage of the wind and in the driving rain to end up winning 11.9 (75) to 7.13 (55).
