Schofield confident Lions can bounce back to reach grand final

Friday, September 12, 2014 - 10:21 AM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO coach Jarrad Schofield remains confident his team will bounce back from last Sunday's second semi-final loss to East Perth and get over East Fremantle in this Sunday's preliminary final to earn another crack at the Royals in the grand final. Subiaco was the only team to not taste defeat at the hands of East Perth during the 2014 home and away season on the way to finishing in second position on the ladder, but the Lions came up short to the tune of 32 points in last Sunday's second semi-final clash at Medibank Stadium. The Lions now have another chance to reach the grand final of 2014 by hosting the Sharks this Sunday again at Medibank Stadium and Schofield remains confident his team will bounce back well from the loss to East Perth. Retired Handley confident Claremont will be a force in 2015

Thursday, September 11, 2014 - 11:21 AM - by Chris Pike
TWO-time Claremont premiership star Trinity Handley is still adjusting to the fact that he has played the last game of his outstanding WAFL career but has no doubt that the giant strides made by the Tigers in the second half of 2014 will hold the club in good stead. Handley played the last game of his 189-match career alongside the also retiring Luke Blackwell, Andrew Foster and Matt Orzel in Claremont's stirring final round victory over East Perth at Medibank Stadium. That brings to an end a career that saw Handley take part in five grand finals for two premierships and 17 finals matches overall including an appearance for WA since making his debut in 2004 and he was part of a consistently strong Claremont team that made finals in seven of his 10 seasons. Thursday, September 11, 2014 - 1:14 AM - by Chris Pike

Wulff played for 11 years in the WAFL and in 225 matches before making it into his first grand final last year in the loss to West Perth and now he is preparing for his second in as many years after East Perth qualified for the 2014 decider with a 32-point win over Subiaco in the second semi-final. East Perth will now have preliminary final weekend off while Subiaco and East Fremantle do battle on Sunday for a place in the grand final on Sunday September 21 at Patersons Stadium. Read More ...

Young hopes Sharks can keep momentum going in prelim

Wednesday, September 10, 2014 - 6:31 PM - by Chris Pike
ROB Young could have very well played in the most remarkable win of his 149-game career with East Fremantle in Sunday's first semi-final as he now desperately tries to help the Sharks beat Subiaco in this Sunday's preliminary final. East Fremantle looked dead and buried five goals down to Swan Districts at home on Sunday in the cut-throat first semi-final, but the Sharks took advantage of the howling wind, a tired opponent and their own self belief to pile on nine goals to nil to end up winning by 23 points in stunning fashion. That was just the third winning final that Young has played in since joining East Fremantle from VFL club Coburg in 2007 as he now prepares for his 150th game to become a life member at the Sharks in this Sunday's preliminary final at Medibank Stadium against Subiaco. Comet Bay College claim Eagles Schoolboys crown

Monday, September 8, 2014 - 10:48 AM
In what has been described as one of the best games of Schoolboys football seen in recent times Comet Bay College pulled off a miraculous final minute goal to seal their first Eagles Schoolboys Cup crown over a fast finishing Trinity College.   The contest was hard fought throughout with eight points the margin in favour of Comet Bay at half time. They increased their lead to 20 points at three quarter time break and it looked like the game was almost over. But a ‘never say die’ attitude from Trinity had the scores even with only 90 seconds left on the clock. Read More ...

WAFL Semi-Final Results

Sunday, September 7, 2014 - 11:56 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Perth is straight into the WAFL grand final for 2014 with Subiaco and East Fremantle setting up a battle over who takes on the Royals in the premiership decider following Sunday's semi-final action. East Perth won the second semi-final at Medibank Stadium over Subiaco 13.12 (90) to 7.16 (58) on the back of kicking the first four goals of the game, and then three quick majors in the opening four minutes of the second half. While the Royals were in control of the contest virtually from the start, that was far from the case in the first semi-final at ATOM Stadium. Swan Districts dominated the majority of the first three quarters to still lead by 30 points at three quarter-time, but East Fremantle had the advantage of the howling breeze in the final quarter and took full advantage with nine goals to nil in the last term to win 19.7 (121) to 14.14 (98). Sunday, September 7, 2014 - 1:49 PM - by Chris Pike
BRENDON Jones decided against retiring in the end in 2014 and not only did he continue to be one of the WAFL's elite midfielders, but on Saturday night was awarded the Tuckey Medal for the second time as Peel Thunder's fairest and best player. Not only did Jones decide to change his mind of his retirement decision from the end of 2013, but he had such a standout 2014 season that he is now committed to continuing on in 2015 as well meaning he will bring up his 200th WAFL game early next season. Jones has currently played 198 matches made up of 101 with Perth and now the last 97 with Peel and he has not missed a game with the Thunder since Round 23, 2013 – a run of 80 consecutive matches. Saturday, September 6, 2014 - 10:45 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Fremantle might not be entering the finals quite in the form it hoped, but the important thing is the Sharks are there to former skipper Mark McGough as he tries desperately to win an elusive premiership with a strong group of experienced teammates. McGough has now played 98 matches with East Fremantle since arriving in 2010 and was captain up until giving up the role to Sandover Medallist Rory O'Brien this season. With his future up in the air along with several teammates, and with Steven Dodd already announcing his retirement, time is ticking on this Sharks' teams chance to win a premiership together. The WJ Hughes Medal night for 2014 was held on Friday in the Griff John Function Centre at Fremantle Oval and was a time to acknowledge the efforts of senior coach Paul Hasleby over the past three seasons and to look forward to a strong future that he has helped set up for incoming coach Todd Curley. South Fremantle might have missed finals for the third straight season, but there were terrific signs with five straight wins to close out the season and with each and every player featured on the fairest and best leaderboard committed to being with the club in 2015, the future looks bright.   Read More ...
