Heartbreak from last year driving Royals on in 2014

Friday, September 5, 2014 - 10:41 AM - by Chris Pike
EAST Perth was the clear minor premiers at the end of the WAFL season but coach Brian Dawson knows as well as anyone that nothing is guaranteed in the finals and the hurt of losing last year's grand final is certainly driving a large chunk of the Royals on. East Perth finished the season two games clear on top of the ladder to take out the minor premiership for the first time since its last premiership year of 2002, and now the Royals take on Subiaco in the second semi-final in a battle of the co-tenants at Medibank Stadium. The winner will go straight through to the grand final and for East Perth providing a chance to make up for the heartbreak of losing last year to West Perth in the premiership decider. Swan Districts out to prove everyone wrong again in finals

Friday, September 5, 2014 - 10:05 AM - by Chris Pike
SWAN Districts was fully aware that it was written off coming into 2014 and also that given a disappointing last month that it might be underdogs heading into the finals, but the black-and-whites proved everyone wrong to make the finals and are ready to do so again in September. Following the departure of Kyle Hams, Tom Roach, Wayde Twomey, Shaun Hildebrandt, Dayle Garlett, Charlie Cameron, Rory Lobb and Brett Robinson to either retirement, switching clubs or the AFL system, and as a result most pundits had the black-and-whites sliding down the ladder. Swans have made finals the last two years on the back of a second last finish in 2011 following the 2010 premiership, but lost the second semi-final and preliminary final in 2012, and then the first semi-final to East Perth last year. Schofield excited to lead Subiaco into first finals campaign

Friday, September 5, 2014 - 12:06 AM - by Chris Pike
JARRAD Schofield is entering his first finals series as a league coach with Subiaco but has plenty of playing experience on the big stage to call upon as he aims to lead the Lions to a first premiership since 2008 when he was still a key part of the side. Schofield was an AFL premiership player with Port Adelaide in 2004 and then played in three flags with Subiaco in 2006, 07 and 08 to close out his playing career and is hoping that he can help pass on some of that experience and knowledge to a relatively inexperienced group he has in 2014. Subiaco only has Darren Rumble, Kyal Horsley and Shaun Hildebrandt left as premiership players who Schofield played with during the hat-trick of flags between 2006-08 and even from the team that made the 2011 grand final Schofield has overseen a mass turnaround in the squad. Thursday, September 4, 2014 - 11:40 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Fremantle is now hosting its third first semi-final in the last five years this Sunday against Swan Districts with coach Steve Malaxos seeing no reason why the Sharks can't end up going all the way for the first time since 1998 – the same year he retired as a player. After making the finals in 2002 and losing the first semi-final to West Perth, East Fremantle suffered its worst ever run without a finals appearance until 2010 which saw the Sharks host their first ever home final and now this Sunday it will be their third in five years at the newly named ATOM Stadium. In 2010, East Fremantle narrowly lost to East Perth in front of almost 7000 fans and then in 2012 the opponent was the Royals again with over 3500 fans watching the Sharks win their first final since 2000 on their way to a grand final appearance against Claremont.
