Ballard wins Tuckey Medal as Peel's best after Dockers delisting

JACOB Ballard has capped a rollercoaster run of events that included his AFL debut and delisting by Fremantle by winning Peel Thunder's Tuckey Medal as the fairest and best player for the 2015 WAFL season. Ballard has now put together two tremendous seasons continuing to develop as a tough and consistent midfielder who knocks up winning the ball. Brock O'Brien wins Lynn Medal as Sharks' best for 2015

BROCK O'Brien cemented himself as one of the most valuable players in the WAFL in 2015 whether in attack or running off half-back, and that has been acknowledged with the left-footer winning the Lynn Medal as East Fremantle's fairest and best winner. The 2015 season might not have turned out as the Sharks hoped coming off last year's preliminary final appearance with a run of 12 straight matches up until the final round, including Brad Dodd replacing Steve Malaxos as coach, meaning it wasn’t the campaign they were hoping for. However, the one great shining light was the performance of Brock O'Brien first as a an attacking half-back in the first half of the season where his ability to find plenty of the ball, and to kick with great depth and precision setting up East Fremantle from the back half. WAFL players impress at National Combine

WAFL players impressed at the NAB AFL National Draft Combine in Melbourne over the weekend, including Josh Schoenfeld from Peel Thunder who set a new combine record for the 3km time trial and also recorded the top beep test result for 2015. Schoenfeld finished the 3km time trial in 9min. 15sec to beat the record of 9.18 set last year by Sydney Swans draftee Jack Hiscox. Schoenfeld also ran 16.2 in the beep test, the second-best ever recorded behind Hawthorn’s Billy Hartung (16.6 in 2013). East Fremantle Football Club's Jordan Snadden also impressed with top place for 2015 in the Relative Vertical Jump test with a leap of 75cm, 4cm higher than the next best. Aaron Black adds Breckler Medal to Sandover Medal

AARON Black's remarkable young WAFL career has gathered another significant landmark with the 22-year-old midfielder winning the Breckler Medal for the first time as West Perth's fairest and best for the 2015 season. Black received the Breckler Medal as the fairest and best winner on Friday night at Joondalup's HBF Arena as the West Perth Football Club celebrated a tremendous 2015 season that saw the Falcons' league side make the grand final, and the reserves and colts both making the finals. Ashton Hams wins South Fremantle fairest and best for first time

ASHTON Hams has claimed his first WJ Hughes Medal as the South Fremantle Football Club fairest and best award winner capping off a tremendous 2015 WAFL season that included him representing Western Australia and earning life membership at the Bulldogs. Hams had a tremendous season for South Fremantle with the 29-year-old dual premiership player spending the majority of the season in the midfield, averaging 29.9 possessions a game being tremendously consistent not having a game with less than 17 touches. Along the way, he had 10 matches with 30 or more disposals and in the last 10 games of the 2015 season he was particularly outstanding averaging 33 possessions. Read More ...


Dominant ruckman Johnson claims second FD Book Medal

PAUL Johnson continues to be the premier ruckman in the WAFL and after a 2015 season that saw him again confirm himself as the league's best big man and leading Western Australia to a State game win, he has claimed a second FD Book Medal as East Perth's fairest and best. Johnson has now put together a remarkable four seasons in the WAFL with East Perth following his AFL career, and in his 90 matches with the Royals he has been the outstanding ruckman in the WAFL averaging 17 possessions, four marks and 29 hit outs right across the four years. He again had an outstanding 2015 season and especially stood up to be East Perth's only big man for a lot of the second half of the season with Scott Lycett, Callum Sinclair and Fraser McInnes all unavailable either through injury or playing in the AFL with the West Coast Eagles. WA winner claims Toyota Good for Footy Raffle major prize

Community football clubs around Australia are celebrating thanks to the Toyota Good for Footy Raffle. The raffle, which kicked off for the first time nationally in 2015, proved a huge success with more than $387,000 raised across 249 football clubs. Toyota, the AFL and the West Australian Football Commission teamed up to create the raffles with one goal in mind — to make it easy for clubs to raise as much money as possible. The raffle was rolled out across seven states and territories to make it one of the largest grassroots fundraisers ever seen in Australia. Clubs registered online to receive free raffle books and sell tickets for $5 each, keeping 100% of the proceeds. Read More ...


WAFL players in AFL spotlight at Draft Combine

Eight of the West Australian Football League's top players will be tested at the AFL National Draft Combine in Melbourne, starting today and concluding on Sunday, October 11. The players will undertake testing and interviews including fitness assessments, psychomotor testing, medical screening and skills tests. To attend the NAB AFL National Draft Combine, players must be nominated by at least five AFL clubs. Another 23 WAFL players will then be tested at the WA State Combine on Saturday, October 17 at HBF Arena, Joondalup. State Draft Combines will also be held in Melbourne and Adelaide for players nominated by up to four AFL clubs. Approximately 20% of AFL draftees over the last three years have come from the WAFL, which has one of the highest draft rates per-capita with a 10-year average of 14.27 AFL draftees per 1000 participants (2004-14) – above the industry average of 11.16. Riggio pips Davis to claim first Swan Medal

MATT Riggio pipped Ryan Davis to claim the Swan Medal as Swan Districts' fairest and best award on Friday night after career-best seasons from the 2010 premiership pair. Over 220 people attended the Swan Medal night for 2015 and past winners of the fairest and best were on hand including Adam Lange, Craig Callaghan and Garth Taylor to witness Riggio take home the award for the first time after 119 matches with the black-and-whites. Riggio and Davis played in the 2010 premiership for Swan Districts having both previously played in the AFL with North Melbourne and West Coast respectively, and now as veterans they were outstanding midfielders in 2015 and fought out the Swan Medal. Former Sharks benefit from Lions identifying recruiting needs

SAM Menegola has experienced plenty of down times early in his football career but the second half of 2015 at Subiaco saw everything come together remarkably culminating in a premiership alongside one of his ex-East Fremantle teammates Scott Hancock. Menegola has always been a player with enormous talent and versatility to play virtually any position on the ground which is why he's spent four years on AFL lists with Hawthorn and Fremantle respectively. However, injuries meant he never got to see through a full season or settle into one position on the ground with him unable to break through for an AFL debut at either club before being delisted by Fremantle at the end of 2014. Yarran pushes for AFL future, Halligan makes up for heartbreak

SHANE Yarran took another step towards a potential AFL future with a starring performance in Subiaco's second consecutive WAFL premiership while for Kyle Halligan, he was just glad to be part of it after missing out 12 months prior. Yarran has now played two seasons of WAFL football with the Lions and has two premiership medallions to show for it along with having represented Western Australia and winning this year's Bernie Naylor Medal as the league's leading goal kicker. Following an exciting first season in the WAFL in 2014 where he kicked 39 goals in 20 matches to help Subiaco to the premiership, Yarran took it to another level in 2015 and it all began by playing for the Indigenous All Stars in an AFL pre-season hit out against the West Coast Eagles. 2015 WAFL 14s/15s Carnival

Over the next two weeks over 1200 players from 39 teams will participate in the annual WAFL 14’s/15’s Carnival. The carnival is conducted each year between the nine WAFL Clubs and the South West Academy of Sport. Cooper named Football Woman of the Year

West Australian Jan Cooper was named the 2015 Football Woman of the Year at the Liptember Grand Final Comedy Debate at Crown Palladium in Melbourne on Thursday.   Cooper is the AFL’s National Manager of Female Football (WA) and has been synonymous with female football development across the nation. The 2015 reiwa.com Goal of the Year and AHG Mark of the Year were officially announced at the McDonald's WAFL Grand Final on Sunday, September 27. The reiwa.com Goal of the Year went to Subiaco's Shane Yarran for his mid-air soccer goal in Round 1 at Medibank Stadium, while the AHG Mark of the Year went to South Fremantle's Ben Saunders for his screamer in the Round 6 derby at Fremantle Oval. The reiwa.com prize cheque was presented by Hayden Groves from reiwa.com and accepted on behalf of Shane Yarran by Subiaco Football Club President Mark Lawrence at half time of the Grand Final.
