Co-captain looks for Falcons to rise to occasion

Friday, September 25, 2015 - 4:34 PM - by Chris Pike
JAY van Berlo won a Breckler Medal back in 2008, made his AFL debut in 2009 and became a WAFL premiership player in 2013, and now he has the chance to become a premiership captain for West Perth in Sunday's grand final against Subiaco. On the heels of his older brother Nathan coming through West Perth before being drafted to Adelaide where he's gone on to play 202 AFL games and be captain, and setting the scene for his younger brother Mitch to come through who has now played 16 WAFL matches, Jay van Berlo continues to be one of the best and most consistent players in the competition. The now 27-year-old won West Perth's fairest and best award in his first full season of WAFL football in 2008 and that led to him being picked up by Fremantle where he went on to play 32 AFL matches with the Dockers with his last being the western derby of Round 9, 2012. Horsley primed for grand final after toughest year of career

Friday, September 25, 2015 - 4:07 PM - by Chris Pike
KYAL Horsley's return to Subiaco last year went just about perfectly with him ending up premiership captain but he admits that 2015 has been his toughest season with injury troubles, but he is confident that's all behind him now entering Sunday's WAFL grand final against West Perth. Horsley broke into the Subiaco team that was in the middle of a premiership hat-trick to play in the flag of 2008, the losing grand final of 2009 and then he had the best season of his career up to that point in 2011 that led to his drafting by the Gold Coast Suns. He played 14 matches in two years with the Suns and showed he was more than up to AFL standard, but the tough and prolific ball-winning left-footer found himself delisted at the end of 2013 and he returned to Subiaco. Monaghan looks for improved Falcons no matter who ends up in final 22

Friday, September 25, 2015 - 1:03 AM - by Chris Pike
WEST Perth delivered a memorable preliminary final win despite plenty seeming to be working against the Falcons with the only downside being two injuries that now leaves coach Bill Monaghan with interesting selection decisions to make ahead of Sunday's grand final against Subiaco. Despite playing in its 11th consecutive match since a bye in Round 15 coming off a 55-point second semi-final loss to Subiaco and then falling three goals down at quarter-time in the preliminary final against East Perth at HBF Arena on Sunday, West Perth was able to deliver a tremendous last three quarters. In front of a crowd of more than 8500 people and despite losing Matt Johnson (hamstring) and Laine Rasmussen (ankle) to injury by early in the third quarter, West Perth kicked 13 goals to six after quarter-time to beat the Royals by 29 points. Subiaco's Brett Robinson in good place on and off field

Wednesday, September 23, 2015 - 12:42 PM - by Chris Pike
THREE tough years after being part of Swan Districts' remarkable 2010 premiership left Brett Robinson questioning whether he still wanted to play WAFL football, but the way the last 12 months have gone since joining Subiaco, becoming a father and getting married has meant he has never been happier on and off the field. Robinson grew up in Tasmania where he began his senior football career, then moved to Melbourne to play with Werribee in the VFL and then Swan Districts came calling and he joined the WAFL in 2008 under coach Brian Dawson alongside Wayde Twomey and Tim Geappen. Robinson had a stunning first two years as a damaging, hard running and goal kicking midfielder becoming one of the best players in the competition in a Swans team that made the grand final in 2008 and a preliminary final in 2009 – ironically losing both to Subiaco. Bold, brave move to join Perth pays off in spades for Tropiano

Wednesday, September 23, 2015 - 2:23 AM - by Chris Pike
ALL Aidan Tropiano was craving was an opportunity as a midfielder when he made the move to join Perth from East Fremantle midway through the 2014 WAFL season and that decision has paid off in spades with him having a Sandover Medal, Butcher Medal and State jumper to show for it. Tropiano played 36 games with East Fremantle between 2011 and 2014, but since joining Perth just after the halfway mark of last season the now 23-year-old has proven himself as one of the hardest working and biggest ball-winning midfielders in the competition. After leading the WAFL by far in possessions and clearances for the season, and being the most consistent performer across the board, Tropiano won the Sandover Medal in a thrilling count on Monday night one vote ahead of South Fremantle's Ashton Hams and four ahead of Subiaco's Sam Menegola. PERTH is celebrating its second Sandover Medal winner in seven years with Aidan Tropiano taking out West Australian football's most prestigious individual honour in a nail-biting count at the Crown Perth Grand Ballroom on Monday night. Perth's last winner was Ross Young back in 2009 and now Tropiano joins him as reward for a strongly consistent season for a Demons team that might have won just two games, but is trying to build something for the future under new coach Earl Spalding. Tropiano worked tirelessly in the midfield all season long for Perth averaging 32.5 possessions a game and never having an outing of less than 28 disposals, and picking up more than 30 touches on 15 occasions. Sandover Medal Preview

Monday, September 21, 2015 - 1:00 PM - by Chris Pike
THREE players who could have comfortably stayed on AFL lists longer appear the most likely chances of winning the Sandover Medal as the WAFL's fairest and best player on Monday night, but it appears a wide open race with up to a dozen players with a genuine chance to win. The Sandover Medal count for 2015 will be held this Monday night in the Grand Ball Room at Crown Perth with the event broadcast live on radio via 91.3 SportFM from 6.30pm while the count will also be streamed live online from 8.15pm at www.thewest.com.au South Fremantle's Ashton Hams, Swan Districts' Ryan Davis and Subiaco's Sam Menegola are three players to have standout seasons in the WAFL to appear among the fancied candidates to win the 2015 Sandover Medal. However, those three former AFL-listed players are far from the only ones with a chance with Claremont's Corey Yeo and Ryan Neates, East Perth's Steven Payne, Brendan Lee and Paul Johnson, Peel Thunder's Jacob Ballard, Perth's Aidan Tropiano, Subiaco's Chris Phelan or West Perth's Andrew Strijk and Shane Nelson among the others expected to poll well. Preliminary Final McDonald's WAFL Results

Sunday, September 20, 2015 - 9:51 PM - by Chris Pike
WEST Perth showed no ill-effects from playing an 11th straight match or from being down to two men on the interchange for the second half to win through to next Sunday's WAFL grand final following a gutsy 29-point preliminary final win over East Perth at HBF Arena. West Perth came into the contest on the back of a 55-point second semi-final loss to Subiaco having not had a bye since Round 15 and then lost Laine Rasmussen (ankle) and Matt Johnson (hamstring) for the afternoon by early in the third quarter. East Perth was in outstanding form coming into the preliminary final having won seven of its last eight games, including cut-throat finals against Claremont and Peel Thunder, and the Royal started strongly with the breeze kicking four goals to one in the first quarter.
