AFL academies identify top multicultural talent

Young players from diverse backgrounds representing the Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles Next Generation Academies showcased their football talent in front of representatives from the two AFL clubs and all nine WA Football League (WAFL) clubs in Multicultural matches held at East Fremantle Oval on Saturday, 10 December. Dockers and Eagles lock in community camp visits

The AFL has announced the remaining dates and locations for the 2017 Australia Post AFL Community Camps, which see Fremantle Football Club and West Coast Eagles visit both metropolitan and regional communities. The Dockers have already undertaken part one of their community camps with nine players visiting Broome recently, and the remainder of the club’s squad set to visit fans across Perth over March 14 and 16. 2016 Rio Tinto AFL Flying Boomerangs in China

Ten players will represent Western Australia in the Rio Tinto AFL Flying Boomerangs program in China this week as part of a cultural awareness and leadership development camp. Leading the Boomerangs squad of 25 participants is WA’s Jermaine Davis, the first Western Australian to coach the national team since its formation 10 years ago. Students learn ins and outs of umpiring

More than 20 students from Coodanup College in Mandurah will take part in a three-week umpiring course this month to further develop their goal, field and boundary umpiring skills. East Fremantle Football Club legend and WA Football Hall of Fame inductee Alan Preen passed away aged 81 on Sunday, November 27. Preen will be long remembered for his elite skills which saw him represent Western Australia on 15 occasions, finish runner-up in the 1958 Sandover Medal and twice win East Fremantle's fairest and best award. He was named in the Sharks' Team of the Century in 1997 and inducted in the WA Football Hall of Fame in 2009. Read More ...

Claremont player Francis Watson has been added to the final position on the West Coast Eagles list after he was recruited today as a category B rookie through the recently-formed next generation academy system. The 21-year-old Tigers defender follows East Perth player Tarir Bayok, an explosive midfielder of Sudanese heritage, as a rookie to be listed with West Coast under the new AFL academy system. Five WAFL players added to AFL Rookie lists

THE West Australian Football Commission congratulates the five WAFL players added to AFL Rookie lists during today’s AFL Rookie Draft. They include #11 Cameron Zurhaar (East Fremantle), #12 Thomas Gorter (East Perth), #21 Luke Strnadica (East Fremantle), #43 Matthew Taylor (Perth) and Category B Rookie Tarir Bayok (East Perth) – the first player selected from West Coast’s new Next Generation Academy. This takes the total number of WA players drafted in 2016 to 15, including 10 in the NAB AFL National Draft on Friday, November 25. WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor congratulated all of WA’s draftees and said to have 15 players from the WAFL competition added to AFL lists was a positive result for WA Football. “To see all of these players receive an opportunity at an AFL club is terrific. SOUTH Fremantle Football Club Chief Executive Officer Stuart Kemp has called time on his successful career for the Bulldogs, leaving the organisation in great shape as it targets continuous improvement in the future.  After four years in the WAFL with South, Kemp has been a driving force to the resurgence of the club in many areas. With the Bulldogs now turning a regular profit and  winning the coveted Rodriguez Shield for the most amount of wins across all grades by a WAFL club in 2016, he feels it’s the perfect time to move on. Kemp emphasised the club had been very good to him, but it was the right time for someone else to steer the ship. WAFC Congratulates WAFL Draftees

THE West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) congratulates the 10 WAFL players selected in the 2016 NAB AFL National Draft in Sydney tonight, including two top 10 selections and four in the first round. First round selections included pick #6 Sam Petrevski-Seton (Claremont), #8 Griffin Logue (Swan Districts), #18 Sam Powell-Pepper (East Perth) and #19 Tim English (South Fremantle).  WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor congratulated all the players selected and paid tribute to everyone involved in their development. “This is a fantastic achievement not only for the players selected tonight, but for everyone who has been part of their football journey.
