WITH Peel Thunder again looking to build some momentum this season and Swan Districts out to bounce back, all signs are pointing towards a terrific contest at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Saturday. The reigning premiers Peel returned to the winner's list last week beating Claremont by 23 points following a four-game losing run. Round 9 Preview - East Fremantle v East Perth

EAST Fremantle is back at East Fremantle Oval on Saturday in search of its first win of 2017 but ahead of them is a fresh East Perth team coming off two victories prior to last week's bye. The Sharks enter the clash having lost their opening six games of the season while the Royals did lose their first five matches too, but have since won two before the bye to get things back on track. East Fremantle's opening two games were especially disappointing with big losses to Claremont and Peel Thunder, but the four defeats since to Perth, Swan Districts, South Fremantle and West Perth have been vastly more competitive despite still being losses.  Read More ...

WAFL Round 9 teams and previews

THE game of the WAFL season to date is shaping up to take place at Leederville Oval on Saturday with top spot on the line as Subiaco hosts South Fremantle with three other big Round 9 matches taking place as well. All four Round 9 WAFL matches will again take place on Saturday afternoon. The action begins at 1.40pm at Bendigo Bank Stadium in Mandurah with reigning premiers Peel Thunder hosting Swan Districts. Horsley reaches 150 but big game the focus for Lions skipper

SUBIACO captain Kyal Horsley plays his 150th game this Saturday to earn life membership at the Lions but all he is worrying about is leading his team into battle in the top-of-the-table clash with South Fremantle. Horsley will add another achievement to his remarkable career with the Subiaco skipper playing his 150th game with the Lions to earn life membership of the club he joined from Kalgoorlie in 2007 and it's another achievement in a glittering career. Horsley already is a triple premiership player at Subiaco, dual premiership captain, two-time fairest and best winner and has played twice for Western Australia on top of his 14 games in the AFL for the Gold Coast Suns. Junior umps rub shoulders with cream of umpiring crop

Four junior community umpires got the opportunity to rub shoulders with AFL umpires at the Fremantle v Essendon clash at Domain Stadium on May 7 as part of AFL Community Umpiring Week. The young aspiring umpires met the AFL field, boundary and goal umpires along with the match day AFL umpire coaches before the game. Former West Australian Football League field umpire Nathan Williamson, who now lives in Melbourne and officiates AFL, showed the four umpires how the communication vests worn on match day work. Harrison selected for national sport leadership program

West Australian Football Commission Goldfields Regional Manager Gemma Harrison has been recognised nationally for her quality leadership skills and positive impact on WA football after being selected for the Australian Sports Commission’s inaugural Stepping In program. The Stepping In program is a new component of the Women Leaders in Sport (WLIS) program and aims to provide intensive targeted leadership development opportunities for identified women leaders in sport. Gemma is one of 18 successful applicants selected from an outstanding field who will take part in the intensive 12-month program, delivered by the Melbourne Business School, through a series of face-to-face residential labs, immersive experiences, executive coaching, individual assessment and regular feedback and reflection. Structural Review of WA Football

The West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) has released its structural review into WA football. The Structural Review of Football Report, available for download and feedback below, was undertaken to develop a clear plan for football to remain the number one sport in WA.  The review assessed the current structures in place within WA football and identified a number of best practice reforms that will ensure football in this state remains engaging, sustainable, and relevant in the long-term. WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor said there had never been a major structural review since the WAFC’s inception 28 years ago as the custodians of WA football, from grassroots to the elite level. Read More ...

Impact doesn’t transfer to WAFL competition

Abolishing national transfer fees for State League competitions at the end of last season has had a limited impact on WAFL player movement this season. The number of players arriving to, and departing from WAFL clubs is below average compared to the previous three years, with the net player loss or gain shifting slightly from -0.3 to +3 for the 2017 McDonald’s WAFL Premiership Season. WAFL General Manager Steve Hargrave said that from a WA perspective, the limited impact on player movement reflected overall stability at a national level in relation to transfers between State Leagues. WAFC invests in community facilities

The West Australian Football Commission has committed more than $40,000 to five community facilities projects in the first round of WAFC Community Facilities Funding for 2017.  The projects include a range of upgrades for metropolitan and regional football clubs, with a total of $41,000 approved by the WAFC Facilities Committee as part of the funding program.   Successful projects include: Cottesloe Amateur Football Club floodlighting Boddington Football Club floodlighting Morley Junior Football Club clubroom refurbishment Ocean Ridge Amateur Football Club shelter installation Pinjarra Football Club additional storage space The WAFC Community Facilities Fund aims to supplement efforts at a strategic level to ensure football has access to quality facilities to support the future growth of the game in Western Australia.  Read More ...


Round 8 Reserves and Colts Wrap

SOUTH Fremantle surged clear on top of the WAFL Reserves with a big win over Perth in Round 8 on Saturday while little separates East Fremantle, Peel Thunder and Swan Districts in the REDiMED Colts. The reserves matches on Saturday saw Claremont defeat Peel Thunder 22.15 (147) to 8.7 (55) at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, East Fremantle down West Perth 16.11 (107) to 9.10 (64) at East Fremantle Oval, South Fremantle beat Perth 22.12 (144) to 5.4 (34) at Lathlain Park and Swan Districts prevail over Subiaco 11.8 (74) to 9.11 (65) at Steel Blue Oval. The results saw South Fremantle (6-1) move a game and percentage clear on top of the ladder in the reserves. ALL four Round 8 WAFL matches took place on Saturday afternoon with South Fremantle and Subiaco setting up their top-of-the-table clash with strong wins while West Perth and Peel Thunder also won impressively. Peel Thunder returned to the winner's list with the reigning premiers snapping a four-game losing run by handing Claremont a fourth straight loss, winning 12.6 (78) to 8.7 (55) at Fremantle Community Bank Oval. SOUTH Fremantle maintained its hold on top spot on the WAFL ladder with a fifth straight victory beating Perth by 60 points at Lathlain Park on Saturday. It was always going to be a big task for the one-win Perth to challenge a South Fremantle who has lost just once this season. The final scoreline of South Fremantle winning 22.14 (146) to 13.8 (86) suggests a comfortable win for the Bulldogs, but it doesn’t tell the full story of a competitive Demons effort who ensured South Fremantle had to work hard to beat them.
