Simpson Saunders shows again he's made for big stage

Friday, June 2, 2017 - 10:26 AM - by Chris Pike
SOUTH Fremantle full-forward Ben Saunders is made for the big stage and he showed why with a third straight starring performance for the WAFL State Team in Saturday's win over the VFL as he added a Simpson Medal to his three Bernie Naylor Medals. Saunders might not have been able to cement a spot in a supremely strong Claremont team back in 2010 and 2011. He had managed just five senior games for eight goals but in 18 reserves matches in 2011, he kicked 68 goals. He without question had the potential to be a star in the WAFL, it was just opportunity that he was after. Read More ...

Friday, June 2, 2017 - 8:39 AM - by Chris Pike

But in his first season since stepping down as Claremont coach in the WAFL after three years and away from a regular involvement in top-level football, Broadbridge was only too happy to take on the challenge of trying to beat Victoria in Melbourne for the first time. Redemption for a decade ago just as vital as history for WAFL

Friday, May 26, 2017 - 12:59 PM - by Chris Pike
HISTORY beckons the WAFL State Team against the VFL on Saturday but redemption for what happened at the very same venue 10 years ago will be every bit as important. No West Australian team has ever defeated Victoria in Melbourne.  The first attempt was in 1904 and in 23 tries since whether it has been State of Origin or representative State matches, the Big V has always been able to prevail over the Black Swans. WA did break a significant drought against Victoria when the WAFL defeated the VFL by 17 at Northam in 2013 winning over the Big V for the first time in 22 years, but nothing would beat getting that first win over the Victorians on their home turf.
