WAFC congratulates Carlton Draught State Team

The West Australian Football Commission congratulates the Carlton Draught WAFL State Team led by coach Michael Broadbridge and captain Kyal Horsley on creating history against Victoria on Saturday, May 27. WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor said that on behalf of the WAFC and the board of Commissioners, he congratulated each of the coaches, players and support staff on the significant role they played in WA’s historic win over the Victorian Football League. “To defeat Victoria on their home soil for the first time in 113 years was a momentous occasion for WA football and one that the WAFC is extremely proud of,” he said. “We greatly appreciate everyone’s commitment to the State program in 2017, especially the players and coaches and the support staff that assisted from South Fremantle Football Club. THE WAFL State Team made history by becoming the first ever West Australian senior team to beat Victoria in Melbourne on Saturday, May 27 at North Port Oval. Football umpires tackling game management

More than 120 junior umpires got the opportunity to hear from AFL Umpire and West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) Umpire Development Manager Dean Margetts about the importance of game management at a recent umpire training session. The session was delivered by the West Australian Football Commission in partnership with Claremont, Subiaco and West Perth Junior Football Leagues with the aim to upskill local junior umpires and ensure there is consistency in game management at a community football level. State Game – WAFL v VFL Match Report

THE WAFL State Team has made history becoming the first ever West Australian senior team to beat Victoria in Melbourne and doing so in style defeating the VFL by 63 points on Saturday at North Port Oval. On 23 previous attempts, WA teams whether they be interstate matches, as part of carnivals, State of Origin or representative clashes they have failed to find a way to beat the Big V in Melbourne. Redemption for a decade ago just as vital as history for WAFL

HISTORY beckons the WAFL State Team against the VFL on Saturday but redemption for what happened at the very same venue 10 years ago will be every bit as important. No West Australian team has ever defeated Victoria in Melbourne.  The first attempt was in 1904 and in 23 tries since whether it has been State of Origin or representative State matches, the Big V has always been able to prevail over the Black Swans. WA did break a significant drought against Victoria when the WAFL defeated the VFL by 17 at Northam in 2013 winning over the Big V for the first time in 22 years, but nothing would beat getting that first win over the Victorians on their home turf. Broadbridge backs WAFL squad on historic mission

WAFL State Team coach Michael Broadbridge is confident that his team is ready to make history against the VFL in Melbourne at North Port Oval on Saturday. Broadbridge has coached Claremont the past three years in the WAFL but after deciding to step down at the end of 2016, he was only too happy to accept the job as coach of the State Team with the task of making history in Melbourne this Saturday. Western Australia has played Victoria in Melbourne on 24 occasions dating back to 1904 and never come away with a victory. Read More ...

Round 10 Reserves and Colts Wrap

DESPITE a loss at home to East Perth on Saturday, South Fremantle's reserves maintain a hold on top spot following Round 10 while East Fremantle downed Subiaco to remain on top of the REDiMED Colts. The Round 10 reserves contests saw Perth defeat Peel Thunder 17.13 (115) to 6.8 (44), East Perth down South Fremantle 12.5 (77) to 8.9 (57), East Fremantle beat Subiaco 14.5 (89) to 10.10 (70) and Claremont prevail over West Perth 11.14 (80) to 4.7 (31). Following 10 rounds of the 2017 season in the reserves, South Fremantle (7-2) remains on top of the ladder ahead of Claremont (6-3) and Perth (6-3). Swans umpire reaches 800-game milestone

55-year-old umpire Peter Williams stepped out onto the footy field for the 800th time on Sunday, May 21 to umpire the Year 7 match between Upper Swan and Bassendean at Swan Athletic Oval. Williams has become a household name in the Swan Districts Junior umpiring community and has provided enormous on and off field leadership to many young umpires who have come through the system, including WAFL and AFL umpires Ryan Shelton, Brett Rogers and Ben and Matt Laycock. It was a very special moment for Williams who was congratulated at the end the match by Perth-based AFL umpire and WA Football Commission Umpire Development Manager Dean Margetts. Read More ...


Carlton Draught WAFL State Team set to take on the Big V

THE Carlton Draught WAFL State Team departs for Melbourne today ahead of this Saturday’s clash with the VFL at North Port Oval. The game will be televised live on Channel 7 from 12pm WA time on Saturday, May 27. A final squad of 24 players was selected following last night’s training session, with Subiaco captain Kyal Horsley named State captain. Football program kicking goals for Indian community

Kids from an Indian background between the ages of 5 and 12 got given the opportunity to learn the basics of football as part of the inaugural Indian Society of WA (ISWA) Kids football program. The six-week program, developed by the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) in partnership with the ISWA, is the first of its kind in Perth. It aims to expose Indian communities in WA to AFL and connect them to their local football club. More than 45 participants took part in the program, which was delivered at Burrendah Park (Willetton) and Hilcrest Reserve (Bayswater) over six Sundays. Read More ...

ROUND 10 of the WAFL saw Subiaco, West Perth, East Perth and Peel Thunder all continue their winning ways heading into the state game break with a career best five goals from Falcons veteran Andrew Strijk among the highlights. Subiaco won its eighth straight game to head into the break two games clear on top of the ladder winning a good battle with the undefeated East Fremantle, 15.18 (108) to 11.11 (77) at Leederville Oval.
