WE are now just days away from the opening of the 2018 WAFL season with the final pre-season results seeing wins for Subiaco, Peel Thunder, Swan Districts and South Fremantle – the top four teams from 2017 – across the weekend.
Round 1 of the 2018 WAFL season now begins on Good Friday with Peel Thunder playing East Fremantle at Bendigo Bank Stadium while Subiaco also plays East Perth at Leederville Oval.
Then on Saturday the other two matches in Round 1 sees West Perth take on Claremont at HBF Arena and Perth play Swan Districts at Lathlain Park.
The final pre-season action started on Friday night with Subiaco beating East Fremantle 20.15 (135) to 10.11 (71) at Leederville Oval.
It was a dominant showing from the Lions starting with nine goals to three in the first quarter. They went on to lead by 55 points at half-time, 63 at three quarter-time and then 64 by the final siren.
Then on Saturday, Peel Thunder put in another impressive performance beating East Perth 20.9 (129) to 3.7 (25).
Peel piled on the only eight goals of the first quarter and then 12 to one in the opening half before going on to win by 104 points.
Hugh Dixon kicked six goals for the Thunder from 18 possessions and six marks.
Michael Apeness also booted three goals, Haydn Matthews two, Michael Tassone two and Scott Jones two.
Sean Darcy had 17 touches, six marks and 28 hit outs in the ruck.
Tom Sheridan collected 25 disposals, Adam Cerra 24, Brad Walsh 23, Taylin Duman 23, Blair Bell 21, Brennan Cox 20 and Joel Hamlin 20 to go with eight marks.
Brayden Ainsworth collected 26 possessions for East Perth, Josh Rotham 25, Francis Watson 19, Hamish Brayshaw 19, Callan England 18 and Luke Partington 18.
Swan Districts recorded a tight 9.12 (66) to 8.12 (60) victory against Claremont at Steel Blue Oval.
Swans started strongly after not playing in the second week of the pre-season by kicking five goals to two in the first quarter against the Tigers, and then the only goal of the second term to lead by 28 points at half-time.
Claremont finished strongly with six goals to three in the second half but Swan Districts held on to win by six points.
Todd Banfield kicked three goals for the black-and-whites and Matthew Rogers two.
Steven Payne gathered 24 possessions, Matt Riggio 23, Tony Notte 20, Warrick Wilson 20, Jackson Slater 20, Brayden Hackett 19, Rogers 19 and Corey Gault 19.
Beau Maister kicked three goals for Claremont while Keifer Yu and Ian Richardson booted two each.
Kane Mitchell racked up 34 disposals for the Tigers, Ryan Lim 30, Jacob Sideris 23, Yu 23, Tom Ledger 22, Lachlan Martinis 21, Tom Shanahan 21 and Nick Winmar 20.
South Fremantle has the Round 1 bye but continued its good pre-season form with a 20.12 (132) to 8.4 (52) victory against Perth at Lathlain Park.
The Bulldogs led by 14 points at quarter-time but then turned it on in the second quarter with seven goals to three. Another nine goals to three in the second half saw South Fremantle win by 80 points.
New South Fremantle captain Dylan Main was superb with 28 possessions, seven marks and four goals. Blaine Johnson also kicked three goals, Matthew Parker three, Ashton Hams two and Tom Vandeleur two.
Blayne Wilson also had 25 touches, Jarrod Parry 23, Hams 22, Shaun Bewick 21, Jacob Dragovich 21 and Haiden Schloithe 21.
Corey Yeo gathered 26 possessions for Perth, Matthew Taylor 24, Corey Byrne 22, Ben Giobbi 20 and Richard Bourne 20.
