Round 10 Match Previews

ROUND 10 of the WAFL sees all four games take place on Saturday afternoon with each of them pitting a top four team against one sitting in the bottom four but we've already seen in 2018 that upsets are more than possible. Coming off the traditional WA Day derbies as well, it throws up some challenges in Round 10 for those teams who competed on Monday with South Fremantle, East Fremantle and West Perth all having five-day breaks against opponents who have had at least seven days in between matches. WAFC congratulates Trent Cooper

The West Australian Football Commission congratulates WA State 18s AFLW coach Trent Cooper on his appointment as Fremantle Football Club AFLW senior coach. WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor said he was pleased that Cooper, who has been WA's State 18s AFLW coach since 2017, had received the opportunity to continue his contribution to female football at the highest level. "Trent has been a key part of WA's female talent academy since commencing in the role at the beginning of last year and it is great to see him get the recognition and reward he deserves," Taylor said. WA States 18s coach announced as new Fremantle AFLW coach

Fremantle have announced their new NAB AFL Women’s senior coach for the next two seasons, with current WA Football Commission female high performance coach and WA U18 women’s coach Trent Cooper taking the reigns at the club until 2020. Cooper arrives at Fremantle as the successor to inaugural AFLW coach Michelle Cowan.  The former Swan Districts and Peel Thunder player has an impressive coaching resume, including working as an assistant coach for the Swan Districts league team and coaching their colts to a premiership in 2014. TABtouch Team of WA Day Round 9

IT was a fascinating WA Day long weekend of WAFL action in Round 9 with a host of players putting their hands up for the TABtouch Team of the Round in wins for Peel Thunder, Swan Districts, West Perth and South Fremantle. The WA Day round began on Saturday afternoon with Peel Thunder returning to the winner's list defeating Claremont 10.5 (65) to 7.12 (54) at Claremont Oval boosted by the inclusions of the likes of Brandon Matera, Danyle Pearce and Hayden Ballantyne. Swan Districts then trailed Perth by 40 points shortly before half-time but kicked 12 of the last 13 goals from there and the last eight of the match to win 17.13 (115) to 13.7 (85) at Steel Blue Oval. M & J Chickens Player of WA Day Round 9

NICK Suban was trumpeted as one of the biggest off-season recruits when he signed with South Fremantle and he delivered his best performance of 2018 in Monday's WA Day Foundation Derby victory. Suban joined South Fremantle for the 2018 WAFL season following his 156-game AFL career at Fremantle and after a solid start to his time with the Bulldogs, he went up another cog on Monday and has been named the M & J Chickens Player of the Round as a result. There was some stiff competition across the WA Day round of WAFL action too for Player of the Round honours with Brandon Matera and Ben Howlett standouts in Peel Thunder's win against Claremont on Saturday with Brayden Noble and Warrick Wilson especially impressive in Swan Districts' win against Perth. WA Day Round 9 Colts Wrap

SWAN Districts consolidated top spot in the WAFL Colts beating Perth on Saturday while there were Round 9 wins also for Peel Thunder, East Perth and East Fremantle. Three of the four Round 9 WAFL colts match ups took place on Saturday starting with Swan Districts consolidating top spot with a 13.6 (84) to 6.4 (40) win over Perth at Steel Blue Oval. Peel Thunder then consolidated second position on the table with a 12.14 (86) to 7.8 (50) win against Claremont at Claremont Oval while East Perth downed an inaccurate West Perth 6.10 (46) to 3.15 (33) at Joondalup Arena. State 18s Championships – Round 1

Western Australia commenced its AFL and AFL Women’s State 18s National Championship campaign last weekend. WA’s Mundella AFL Women’s State 18s overcame a strong Queensland outfit in their opening clash of the championships at Subiaco Oval on Saturday, June 2.= Trailing close behind Queensland for the majority of the match, WA put their best foot forward in the final term to take out a 4.6 (30) to 3.9 (27) victory. Talent partnership producing benefits

Western Australia’s most talented young footballers will benefit from a stronger partnership between the WA State Academy and NAB AFL Academy program next season.   From 2019, the AFL’s national Academy program will provide an opportunity for 30 West Australian players to attend high performance camps conducted in partnership with the WAFC and State Academy to provide specialised coaching to more players.   This will include a mixture of 17 to 19-year-old players as part of a national upgrade to the NAB AFL Academy, announced recently by the AFL. Round 9 Match Report – Claremont v Peel Thunder

PEEL Thunder returned to the WAFL winner's list on Saturday and stayed in touch with the top five with a solid 11-point victory against Claremont at Claremont Oval.   Peel had come off a disappointing last two weeks made up of a four-goal loss to the last placed East Fremantle and a 92-point defeat to Subiaco while Claremont had upset South Fremantle last week to win by a goal.   But it was the Thunder on top from the outset at Claremont Oval on Saturday to come away with the hard fought 10.5 (65) to 7.12 (54) victory. Round 9 Match Report – Swan Districts v Perth

SWAN Districts fought back from 40 points down to kick the last nine goals and beat Perth by 30 points in the WAFL Round 9 contest at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday.   Perth shot out of the blocks in stunning fashion at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday piling on eight first quarter goals to two.   Perth went on to lead by 40 points late in the second quarter. But Swan Districts kicked the last two goals of the first half, five goals to one in the third quarter and the only five goals of the final term to come away with the 17.13 (115) to 13.7 (85) victory. Round 9 Match Report – West Perth v East Perth

WEST Perth won its first game over East Perth since early 2017 and did so in style in the WA Day Derby on Monday at Joondalup Arena prevailing by 24 points.   East Perth had won the previous three derbies against West Perth including by 58 points in Round 2 of this year, but the Falcons hit back impressively on Monday in front of more than 2500 people at Joondalup Arena.   On the back of five goals in the first half from Tyler Keitel, West Perth was able to open a seven-point lead at the main break before kicking away in the third term to be 16 points up at the last change.
