THERE were plenty of standout performances right across the four games in Round 6 of the WAFL but none better than the effort in a new midfield role from South Fremantle star Marlion Pickett. ROUND 6 of the 2018 WAFL season saw victories for South Fremantle, Subiaco, Peel Thunder and East Perth while a host of players put their hands up to be part of the State match this Saturday against South Australia as well. Three of the four Round 6 matches took place on Saturday afternoon with Subiaco pushed for the first time in 2018, but ending up beating West Perth 13.10 (88) to 10.6 (66) at Leederville Oval. The Western Australian AFL Women's 18s squad has been named ahead of the NAB AFLW under 18s National Championship Series which kicks off on May 25. South Fremantle’s Marlion Pickett and East Fremantle’s George Hampson have been added to the 2018 Kia WAFL State Squad for this weekend’s State Game against the South Australian National Football League in Adelaide. The game will be played at Adelaide Oval at 11.40am WA time on Saturday May 12 as a curtain-raiser to the Port Adelaide v Adelaide AFL Showdown. The game will be streamed live on the WAFL website and WAFL App and simulcast on radio in WA via Sport FM 91.3fm. EAST Perth continued its imposing form since its big loss to Subiaco to open the season cruising to a 33-point win against East Fremantle on Sunday that only wasn’t by significantly more due to their inaccuracy.   East Perth has now won four straight matches and done so in supremely impressive fashion since that 118-point loss to Subiaco on Good Friday to open the 2018 WAFL season.   The Royals had beaten West Perth, Perth and Peel Thunder since then to head to East Fremantle Oval on Sunday full of confidence against an East Fremantle team who had lost to South Fremantle and Swan Districts the previous two weeks by a combined 184 points. FOR the first time in 2018 Subiaco was truly tested by West Perth at Leederville Oval on Saturday, but the Lions responded well to kick 11 of the game's last 16 goals to claim the 22-point victory.   Subiaco had taken all before it over its opening four games before a bye in Round 5 beating East Perth, South Fremantle, Swan Districts and Claremont by an average of 89.5 points.   That meant it was a daunting challenging for West Perth heading to Leederville Oval on Saturday taking on a Subiaco team who hadn’t played since beating Claremont by 86 points 16 days previous. IT was two in-form teams locking horns at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday and despite South Fremantle being down on some key players and Swan Districts never throwing in the towel, the Bulldogs impressed in a 13-point victory.   South Fremantle and Swan Districts both played finals in 2017 and aside from a loss to Subiaco apiece in the opening five rounds, had largely been quite impressive to start 2018 heading into Saturday's clash at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.   The Bulldogs also had to deal with the absence of key players Haiden Schloithe, Ashton Hams, Blayne Wilson and Steven Edwards with Tom Vandeleur, Jarrod Parry and Brendan Verrier already sidelined, but their depth came through against the black-and-whites. PEEL Thunder and Claremont were both desperate to win on Saturday at Bendigo Bank Stadium and in the end it was Peel who controlled the second half to come away with the 20-point victory.   Both teams had won just the one game apiece in the opening five rounds of the 2018 WAFL season heightening the need to return to the winner's list when they did battle on Saturday in Mandurah.   Each side took advantage of the breeze in the opening half with Claremont taking a narrow two-point advantage into the long break.  Read More ...
