WAFL Round 21 Preview

THE third last round of the 2014 WAFL season takes place this Saturday afternoon with top playing bottom, two out of finals contention sides doing battle and then two finals bound teams taking on opponents out of the running. All four clashes will take place on Saturday afternoon with Subiaco playing Claremont at Leederville's Medibank Stadium, Swan Districts hosting South Fremantle at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval, Peel Thunder taking on West Perth at Mandurah's Bendigo Bank Stadium and Perth facing East Perth at Lathlain Park. The fourth-placed East Fremantle has the bye with a finals position almost secure unless Claremont can pull off something remarkable in the last three rounds. Read More ...

Round 20 WAFL Wrap Up

THE seventh and eighth-placed teams produced the best contest of Round 20 of the WAFL on Saturday with Jarrod Pickett winning the game for South Fremantle over Peel Thunder with Claremont, East Fremantle and East Perth also recording wins of various importance. East Fremantle all but secured a finals appearance with a 9.11 (65) to 7.6 (48) win over West Perth at Joondalup's HBF Arena while Claremont beat Perth 17.8 (110) to 10.13 (73) at the Claremont Showground, East Perth defeated Swan Districts 14.22 (106) to 11.5 (71) in Bunbury and South Fremantle scored a stunning 13.17 (95) to 14.10 (94) victory over Peel at Fremantle Oval. THE top four of the WAFL is now set after East Fremantle's win over West Perth in Round 20 action on Saturday while the lowly South Fremantle and Peel Thunder produced an exciting thriller at Fremantle Oval that was decided on the siren. ROUND 20 of the 2014 WAFL season looks to be another tantalising one with fourth position still up for grabs, two of the top three teams looking to bounce back from disappointing losses and two strugglers for the year looking to back up big wins last weekend. The four WAFL matches for Round 20 all take place on Saturday afternoon with West Perth playing East Fremantle at Joondalup's HBF Arena, Swan Districts taking on East Perth in Bunbury, South Fremantle hosting Peel Thunder at Fremantle Oval and Claremont facing Perth at the Showground. Knight makes debut on the boundary

Boundary umpire Claire Knight became the fifth female to umpire WAFL League football this season when she made her debut in the Claremont v South Fremantle game in Round 15. Shepherd reappointed at Peel Thunder

Peel Thunder Football Club has reappointed senior coach Cam Shepherd for the 2015 season. Club President John Ditchburn announced last night that the Board of Directors had unanimously endorsed Shepherd’s renewal for 2015. “The Board and I are very confident that Cam and his assistants will continue the improvements shown with the team in 2014 and see the Club further grow in stature in the WAFL competition in 2015,” Mr Ditchburn said. Boland revelling in chance offered by finals-bound Subiaco

Matt Boland couldn’t find a regular VFL spot and hadn’t played finals for some time when he made the decision to come west to join Subiaco in 2014, and the full-forward has been a driving force behind the Lions now seemingly being guaranteed of a top two finish. The 23-year-old full-forward had spent time with both Sandringham and Collingwood in the VFL, but due to those club's AFL alignments he could never quite earn a regular berth. That meant that when Subiaco came calling for him to join the WAFL, he was only too happy to take up the challenge and he has delivered in spades so far kicking 47 goals in his 16 matches this season in a Lions team currently only 0.02 of a per cent behind the league-leading East Perth on the ladder.
