Round 2 Reserves and Colts Wrap

THERE were once again some impressive reserves performers in Round 2 as they push their cases for a league call up along with some terrific efforts from youngsters in the REDiMED Colts. The three reserves matches on Saturday saw Peel Thunder beat East Fremantle 14.6 (90) to 14.4 (88), Subiaco defeat Perth 19.12 (126) to 9.6 (60) and South Fremantle down Swan Districts 10.11 (71) to 6.9 (45). Moora locals rub shoulders with AFL umpires

Locals in the Midlands town of Moora got the opportunity to rub shoulders with AFL umpires as part of the Annual AFL Umpire Roadshow event held on March 14. AFL Boundary Umpire Ryan Kukura and AFL Field Umpire Dean Margetts made their way to the town as part of the initiative run by the AFL in partnership with the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC). The event which has been running for the best part of a decade provides the opportunity for local regional communities to gain a closer insight into the role of an AFL umpire, including clarification around the laws and the skillset required. ROUND 2 of the 2017 McDonald's WAFL Premiership Season saw Peel Thunder, Swan Districts, Subiaco and West Perth win impressively with plenty of players putting up their hands for the wafl.com.au Team of the Week. Round 2 got underway on Saturday with Peel Thunder defeating East Fremantle 19.12 (126) to 5.10 (40), Swan Districts beating South Fremantle 13.7 (85) to 8.16 (64) and Subiaco downing Perth 13.12 (90) to 10.7 (67). Sharing Subiaco Oval memories

The West Australian Football Commission is urging fans to share their fondest memories of Subiaco Oval (Domain Stadium) as the final season of AFL at the venue commences this weekend.   WAFC Chief Executive Officer Gavin Taylor said with 2017 being the final season of AFL at Subiaco, the WAFC would be capturing and recording a collection of people's greatest memories at the ground.   “Subiaco Oval has a rich history as WA’s home of football and many West Australians have very fond memories of attending their first ever footy game at the ground, witnessing a thrilling win or sharing memories with their family and friends,” he said.   “The footy experience for many people over the years has not only been about passionately supporting their team but the close friendships and sense of community that has been forged. Round 2 – West Perth v East Perth Match Report

WEST Perth has claimed the inaugural Polly Farmer Cup opening its 2017 WAFL season with a 21-point win over East Perth at HBF Arena on Sunday. Following the bye in the opening round, West Perth made its first appearance for 2017 and it was up against arch-rivals East Perth on home turn at HBF Arena with the Polly Farmer Shield on the line named in honour of one of Australian football's legendary figures who played with both clubs. Little separated the two teams all day either in a typically spirited contest between the two clubs. There were nine lead changes along the way but the last one went West Perth's favour 17 minutes into the third term with a goal to Steve Potente. Read More ...


Round 2 – Subiaco v Perth Match Report

PERTH again started strongly and fought hard but were overwhelmed in the end by Subiaco who took out a 23-point win in the twilight Round 2 fixture at Leederville Oval on Saturday. Both the Lions and Demons were coming off Round 1 losses and it was Perth who started the better much like last week. A week ago against Swan Districts the Demons piled on eight first quarter goals before being run over to lose by 12 points. It wasn’t quite as dramatic this week, but Perth still managed to lead Subiaco by four points at quarter-time and by eight at half-time. Read More ...


Round 2 – Swan Districts v South Fremantle Match Report

SWAN Districts has already matched its win tally from last season scoring a second straight victory to open 2017 beating an inaccurate South Fremantle by 21 points at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday. Swan Districts won just two games in all of 2016 on the way to the wooden spoon, but the black-and-whites added some quality AFL experience over summer and that is already paying dividends. Following a come from behind win over Perth to open the season, Swans backed that up with a strong performance against a South Fremantle team who made the preliminary final last year and beat Subiaco to open the new season by 39 points last Saturday. PEEL Thunder and Swan Districts remained unbeaten with WAFL Round 2 victories on Saturday while Subiaco got its first win on the board as well overcoming Perth. Three of the four WAFL Round 2 matches took place on Saturday with Peel Thunder unfurling its premiership flag and scoring a seventh straight victory beating East Fremantle 19.12 (126) to 5.10 (40) at Bendigo Bank Stadium. Swan Districts also won its second straight match to open 2017 beating South Fremantle 13.7 (85) to 8.16 (64) at Steel Blue Oval. PEEL Thunder has continued the impressive start to its WAFL premiership defence with a thumping 86-point win over East Fremantle at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Saturday. On the day the club unfurled its first premiership flag in front of the Mandurah faithful following the triumph in 2016, the Thunder showed that they are far from content with that achievement and are shooting for back-to-back successes this year. Four West Australians have been named in the inaugural Virgin Australia AFL Women's All Australian team on Tuesday night at the W Awards. Chelsea Randall (Swan Districts / Adelaide), Emma King (Coastal Titans / Collingwood), Kara Donnellan (Swan Districts / Fremantle) and Sabrina Frederick-Traub (South Fremantle / Brisbane) were among the final 22 players announced and recognised for their individual performances during the inaugural NAB AFL Women’s Competition. WEST Perth has had an extra week's wait to open the 2017 WAFL season and now the Falcons get underway with a derby against East Perth at HBF Arena with the Polly Farmer Shield on the line on Sunday. West Perth had the opening round bye to prepare for the derby to start its season in 2017 on the back of another finals appearance in 2016.
