WEST Perth and Claremont both finished strongly to record important Round 21 WAFL victories on Saturday afternoon while the league-leading Subiaco handed the wooden spoon bound Perth another big loss.
West Perth consolidated second position on the ladder by kicking the only four goals of the last quarter to beat Swan Districts 14.12 (96) to 11.9 (75) at HBF Arena.
Claremont dominated the second half with 14 goals to four to beat East Fremantle 18.7 (115) to 12.8 (80) at the Claremont Showground to return to fifth position.
Saturday's other game saw minor premier Subiaco thump the bottom place Perth 22.15 (147) to 8.6 (54) at Lathlain Park.
The round will now conclude on Sunday with Peel Thunder and East Perth doing battle at Bendigo Bank Stadium with third position up for grabs, and both putting four-game winning streaks on the line.
At HBF Arena, no more than 11 points separated West Perth and Swan Districts for the first three quarters with plenty at stake with the lead changing on 10 occasions, and being level on another couple of occasions.
It was the Falcons who got the jump with the game's first two goals to Kody Manning and Shane Nelson, and then the home team still led by 12 points at the first change when Corey Chalmers kicked truly after the siren.
It took just two minutes of the second term for Swans to tie scores up following quick goals to Matthew Jukes and Jake Nuich. Swan Districts then led by as much as 11 points during the second quarter and were still four points up at half-time when Tony Notte goaled after the siren.
The black-and-whites then again led by 11 points when Matthew Rogers goaled to start the second half, but Chalmers and Aaron Black kicked two quick goals for West Perth to see the Falcons regain the advantage, and then it was goal to goal up until three quarter-time.
Swans led by three points heading into the last quarter, but it was all West Perth in the final stanza with goals to Michael Lourey, Steve Potente, Nelson and Black securing the 21-point win.
West Perth now remains solid in second position while Swan Districts can only make the finals from here if it beats Claremont next Saturday, and then the Tigers lose to the Falcons in the last round.
Aaron Black worked hard all day on the wing for West Perth to finish with 32 possessions, 14 marks and two goals while Corey Chalmers booted three goals for the Falcons, and Michael Lourey, Shane Nelson and Steve Potente two each.
Trent Manzone also had 30 disposals for West Perth, Jay van Berlo 22, Rohan Kerr 21, Aidan Lynch 21, Andrew Strijk 20, Marcus Adams 19 and Chris Keunen 16 to go with seven marks, 38 hit outs and a goal as he had the better of his ruck battle with Nathan Blakely.
Dylan Nelson and Matthew Jukes both kicked three goals apiece for Swan Districts with Matt Riggio compiling 28 possessions, Aaron Elari 27, Ryan Davis 25, Albert Dean 25, Adam Faulkner 24, Jacob Coniglio 23, Tallan Ames 21 and Tony Notte 20.
East Fremantle headed to the Showground on a 10-game losing streak to take on a Claremont team needing to win to stay in the finals hunt, and it was the Sharks who got off to a strong start.
By half-time, East Fremantle was in control leading Claremont by 25 points following five goals to one in the second quarter, but it was then all the Tigers after the main break.
Claremont kicked five goals to two in the third term, and then another nine goals to two in the last to end up winning by 35 points and to return to fifth position on the WAFL ladder. The Tigers can confirm their place in the finals with a win over Swan Districts next Saturday.
Beau Maister was the star up forward for Claremont kicking six goals to now be in his best form of the season having kicked 15 goals in the last four games after just 13 in his first eight matches.
Mitch Andrews was terrific in the ruck for the Tigers with 21 possessions and 34 hit outs while Tom Ledger racked up 29 disposals, Corey Yeo 28 (two goals), Ryan Neates 22, Matthew Davies 21 and Ryan Lim 20.
Brandon Ellis provided East Fremantle with a target in attack kicking four goals with Matthew Bannister and James Bristow booting two each.
Rory O'Brien compiled 30 possessions for the Sharks, Jacob Green 26, Jamie McNamara 25, Cameron Eardley 24 and Ryan Lester-Smith 22.
And at Lathlain Park, Subiaco started ominously with the first two goals but then Perth was able to grab the momentum kicking four of the last five goals of the term to be surprising four-point leaders at the first chance after Scott Moore goaled after the siren.
However, it was all Subiaco from there and the Lions dominated with 19 goals to four after quarter-time to end up hammering the Demons by 93 points.
Subiaco had no shortage of options in the forward-line with Kyle Halligan kicking six goals, Matt Boland five and Chris Phelan four while Reece Blechynden and Michael Wood chipped in with two apiece.
